Abstract

The use of formative assessments, or other diagnostic efforts within classrooms, provides information that should help facilitate  improved pedagogical practices and instructional outcomes. However, a review of the formative assessment literature revealed that there is no agreed upon lexicon with regard to formative assessment and suspect methodological approaches in the efforts to demonstrate positive effects that could be attributed to formative assessments. Thus, the purpose of this article was to set out to clarify the terminology related to formative assessment and its usage.

Abstract

People who live in the third world country are usually easy to be persuaded with the word of modernity. They like wanting to pursue a world of mirage that promises to live in the present and abound in luxury, but sometimes they are unable to withstand the lifestyle changes that immediately occur in their lives. This study tries to examine the phenomenon above, such as the story raised by N.H. Dini in one of her short stories entitled Pasar Hewan through descriptive method by using Bhabha's postcolonial perspective as the analysis framework. Through this study, the reader will be presented with a story that will invite us to reflect on how a modernization of lifestyle sometimes traps us in a vortex of pain that has no end and is not known how to return, as experienced by Masdun and the village community where he stay. Masdun, who at first was too passionate to change his life, eventually became skeptical and could not do much to the social changes that occurred massively in his surrounding community.

Abstract

English has become one of the most popular languages in the world. English can not directly become the language used to communicate between countries. English is in Lingua Franca's position. Students in this case as liaison actors, are expected to speak with foreign parties using English. English lessons learned from the primary school level for college can be accessed directly. For that use the common vocabulary can be mastered and very easily understood by most people. Foreign language vocabulary should be mastered in order to easily use other people. It will not be a two-way communication when only one person can talk to anyone who can not while in the middle of all sides and has almost the same ability. In order to quickly understand the vocabulary of common language, words that have the same meaning as commonly spoken words. In Indonesia itself, English is the only Indonesian language subject studied from elementary school to university. Although it has produced from an early age, there is still a difficulty in understanding English. Both teachers are teachers and lecturers, many still use conventional methods. In the process of teaching and learning, teachers are still minimal in English in the delivery of material. It makes the learners difficulties from English in pedagogic terms and lack enough resources in speaking. The difficulties that exist are not as harmonious as in speaking, reading, writing and there are only one or both of them. Lack of self-confidence of individual students for fear of mis-practice. Every student is required to improve knowledge and vocabulary in communicating in the intellectual environment. Learning new words is an activity that is routinely done in the neighborhood, in addition to improving the awareness, the environment around it has more knowledge for the real level. In using the vocabulary in the daily activities ideally is done at home. English is very rare in college because of the limited time, in contrast to English-language majors that are required to be done by the British. For starters, students can use the language of the day to launch their grammar in speaking.

Abstract

The title of this study is The Eighth Grade Students’ Erros in Using “have” at SMP PGRI 1 Palembang. The main problem of this study is what kinds of errors are made by the  eighth grade students in using “have’? furthermore, the main objective of this study is to find out the kinds of errors made by the eight grade students at SMP PGRI 1 Palembang in using “have”. In this study the writer used descriptive method to describe and identify the students’ errors in using “have”. The population f this study was the eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 1 Palembang with total number 120 students. The sample was forty students taken by  simple random sampling. In collecting the data, the writter only used the written test whch was analyzed through percentage analysis. Based on the result of written test, it’s found that the students still made errors in using :have”, where it could be seen froom average students’ errors was 81% and using “has” was 76%. And this data indicates that errors most of the students in using “have” were in mis-selection “has” for third person singular refer to selected “have”.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate some issues regarding mixed-English proficiency classes for English Language Teaching in the context of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The existing literatures reveals that there are pros and contras of this class in the forms of ways in grouping the students which lead to students’ different learning styles and interest, and teachers’ teaching and learning materials and methodology. Indeed, this English heterogeneous type of class brings potential risks for the students’ achievement. This paper also proposes three most common Differentiated Instruction strategies to engage mixed-English students in EFL teaching and learning processes more effectively.

Abstract

This paper investigated the used of dictogloss in teaching English grammar. Dictogloss offers a context-rich method of assessing how much students know about the topic of the text. Two tests were given to the students, a pre-test and a post-test. It was found that the students’ score in the posttest (82) was significantly higher than that in the pre-test (59). The writers examined the student’ note taking on the linguistic components and grammatical structures by focusing on certain grammar items, accuracy and meaning. Note taking or composition was scored by using a marking system. By using dictogloss the teacher reinforce students’ mastery in learning English grammar.

Abstract

This research is about defence mechanism of the main characters of Wuthering Heights novel written by Emily Bronte. This research used psychology of literature approach to analyse the characters of intrinsic element of this fiction. It describes and identifies psychology of the main characters; Heathcliff and Catherine, by using the theory of Sigmund Freud (1961) which is divided into three psychic zones id, ego and superego. Thus, this research focuses on the plication of defence mechanism into the main characters of the novel Heathcliff and Catherine which described in the novel. In this research, the author applies qualitative method to analyse the novel and to find out the description of defence mechanism in Heathcliff and Catherine.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the students’ perceptions of final report advisory services in English Department of State polytechnic of Sriwijaya. This would expectedly give insights on how well the tasks of providing services in terms of assisting students with their final report writing had been performed. Questionnaires were self-made, and therefore the validity and reliability test were conducted in which 19 students were involved. The results of this piloting project were analyzed by using the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient. To get the data, 77 students were requested to fill out the questionnaires. Through the use of statistic desriptive analysis, the data were processed and then described in words and numbers. The conclusion was that the lecturers of The English Department had performed their task porperly in providing final report advisory services to their students.

Abstract

This study developed the teaching modules of Speaking 1 into the textbook of Speaking 1. It aimed to find out what kinds of materials and exercises that were suitable needed to improve the teaching and learning outcomes to be applied in the textbook of Speaking 1. Research and Development Methods that was developed by Gall and Gall (2003) were used to get the answer of the research question. Since the study had the limited time, the simplification steps that were developed by Emzir (2013) were chosen. All the steps were divided into two stages. This study found out that various kinds of topics, exercises, supporting aspects and strategies in every chapter gave good impacts in improving the students’ skill in speaking competence.

Abstract

The article had a focus to examine the effectiveness of metacognitive strategies in teaching listening using video media towards the listening proficiency of students in order to overcome the actual obstacles of listening in the class. The participants of the research were the fourth semester students of Chemical Engineering State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. This study was quantitative research. The data collection techniques were taking scores of pretest and posttest done by the students and the data analysis technique was using t-test. The results presented that metacognitive strategies was effective in teaching listening to improve the listening proficiency of students and it indicated a sufficiently great difference of listening proficiency between experiment and control groups.
