Abstract

ABSTRACT: Having the ability to present well is what the employees of Frisian Flag Indonesia (FFI) are seeking from LB LIA Palembang. An outside class of 14 busy employees focuses on giving presentation successfully. Presentation skillsneed to be mastered by the participants in two weeks to present their products. Facebook group was chosen as a medium to practice the participants’presentations. After explaining the basic skills of presentation in class, all participantspresented, recorded then uploaded their presentations to Facebook group, and they were asked to watch their friends’ videos and wrote a feedback based on the designated checklist. The teacher also added the necessary comment. Theparticipants would revise and upload their presentation again based on the comments given. This research was aimed at finding out whether Facebook group is an effective borderless medium to improve students’ presentation skill for busy participants. The research was conducted in 4 cycles including uploading the first video(pretest), 2nd video, 3rd video and final presentation (post test). The result was analyzed by comparing the first presentation and the final presentation based on the designated band descriptor. The result showed that all participants improved their presentation skills by practicing and learning  from each other’s pluses and minuses. Based on the questionnaire all of them like using Facebook group to practice their presentation skills because it is accessible from the comfort  of their own busy schedules. Hopefully,it will inspire other teachers to embrace technology for teaching.

Abstract

Abstract:  Listening Comprehension has been an obstacle for the students to learn English well. They have untold difficulties in understanding listening text. This paper tries to uncover this problem and the step stone to facilitate teachers finding solution to set the students free from their confinement. 56 students were the respondents of the questionnaire concerning about their listening difficulties. Their biggest responses were limited listening time allocation (10%-25% out of teaching time), failure in listening test (41 students), lack of practice listening at home (46 students), using the right learning media (50 students), No meta-cognitive strategy before listening (30 students), listening to word by word technique while listening (35 students), ignoring the difficult words during listening (29 students), speed of speech (38 students), unfamiliar topic (35 students), and long listening text (25). The conclusion is the awareness of listening comprehension difficulties resulted on identifying the problem. As their attitude toward learning was positive, they were able to apply the right strategy to help them reducing their listening problems.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to find out the general description of learning styles, types of learning styles, and English proficiency of students of English Language Education Program,Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP),Sriwijaya University and to find out whether there was a correlation between their learning styles and their English proficiency in general. The population of this study was the 3rd, 5th and 7th semester students of Palembang and Inderalaya campuses. The results show that in general the learning style of the students was dominated by verbal learning style with the percentage of 46.3%followed by social, logical, auditory, solitary, visual, and physical learning styles with the percentage of 18%, 9.8%, 9.4%, 9%, 5.7%, and 1.6% respectively. In general, the students’ English proficiency was still at the elementary level(59%), low intermediate level(30.7%), intermediate level(7%), and advanced level(3.3%). There was no positive and significant correlation between students’ learning styles and their English proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract: The availability of instructional material is very important to support teaching and learning process as well as to improve academic achievement of the students. The objectives of this research were to find out the importance of ESP material development especially speaking materials for the students of English Department State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya based on the viewpoints of the students and the viewpoints of the teachers; what should be considered in developing ESP materials especially speaking materials for the students of English Department State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya; and how to develop ESP materials especially speaking materials for the students of English Department State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. The respondents of this research were 12 student respondents, 3 teacher respondents, the management of the institution, and 2 experts in education and educational technology. The data were collected by using in depth-interview and analyzed by using descriptive analyses. The results revealed that ESP materials especially speaking materials for the students of English Department State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya were important to be developed to fulfill the needs of specific purposes; the factors that should be considered in developing ESP materials especially speaking materials for the students of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya were students’ needs, the institution needs, and the users’ needs, authenticity of the text and the task, and personal touch; ESP material developer especially speaking material developer can use many kinds of R & D models like the small scale project of R & D proposed by Gall, Borg, and Gall (2003).

Abstract

This study aims to find out the level of translation competence of the students of English Education Study Program of Sriwijaya University, to find out the strategies used by the students in translating texts from Indonesian to English and to identify the problems they encounter in translating texts. There were 36 students taken as the sample. A descriptive method was used in this study. The data were obtained by means of questionnaires, task, and interview. The findings showed that the subjects demonstrated pretextual level of translation competence. Spelling is accurate; source text is fully translated (only a few subjects did not translate it fully); text is long and strung-out because of use function words rather than lexicalizations; vocabulary is not varied; translation is structurally very close to the source text; and style is more “verby”. The findings of this study showed that most subjects tried to identify the main idea of the text before beginning to translate. They tried to understand the meaning of the words from the context first. If they could not grasp the meaning of that words, they consulted monolingual dictionaries, but if still did not get the meaning, they then looked for the words in bilingual dictionaries. Some of them did it the opposite. The findings of this study showed that most subjects thought that vocabulary, sentence structure, and word choice were the most difficult problems for them when translating. Some of them got problems when translating due to their knowledge background of the text to be translated and culture involved in the text.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to improve reading comprehension achievement on narrative and recount texts of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Prabumulih.  In the experimental groups, students did their readings by using ACTIVE technique. This study used quasi experiment method. To investigate the improvement of students reading comprehension achievement in the class, the reading tests were given to them. The first thing which was done after designing the test was finding their validity and reliability. The total number of the population was 189 students consisting of 127 females and 62 males. The sample of this study was 83 students consisting of 56 females and 28 males. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique. There were three groups in this study: the experimental groups and control group. In collecting the data the instruments used were tests, namely pre test ( at the beginning of the treatment) and post test (after the treatment). The statistical analysis were applied to analyze the collected data, that is One Way Anova (to asses the differences within the group) and linier regression (to find out the contribution of the independent variable to the dependent variables). The result of the study shows that (1) The ACTIVE technique is effective in improving the reading comprehension achievement on narrative and recount text of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Prabumulih. (2) The ACTIVE technique contributes more on students reading comprehension achievement on recount text than the narrative one.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the ability of students to use English collocation and its correlation with their academic achievements. The samples of this study are the 5th semester students of English education study program, UniversitasSriwijaya. Data were gathered by means of ability test using English collocation and academic achievements, GPA. The analysis results showed that there was a positive correlation between the ability of students to use English collocation and their academic achievements.

Abstract

In Palembang, there are few people promoting culinary through the film as promotion media. Whereas culinary in Palembang is very potential to be known by tourists. The purpose of this research was to know how to design a short film as one of media to promote Palembang Tourism Culinary. Through film as media, viewers can see repeatedly for a long period of time. So when they come to Palembang, they will remember the foods in the film and start trying them.  The writers used Research and Development method to conduct this research. To collect the data, the writers used interview and observation techniques and analyzed the data through validation instrument done by experts. The result of this research was film could be used as one of media to promote culinary tourism in Palembang. Moreover, the short film was uploaded to YouTube in order to see the responses from people or viewers of Palembang Culinary.

Abstract

The growth of educational research as one of scientific research has come to the state where the researchers in this field make their studies to generate a model for better educational practices. One of the most outstanding model designs is Research and Development (R&D) Method by Borg & Gall (1983), nevertheless, the widely use of this method prompts a question whether it is the only proper method in educational research.  This paper is aimed to discuss in depth the R&D Method in some educational research by comparing the simplified steps and characteristics in those research. This paper also provides some alternatives of model design for educational research in which the usage and its implementation are adjusted in accordance to the research context and researchers characteristics.
