Ruwa Jurai: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan is an open access scientific journal with a blinding review process published by the Department of Environmental Health, Tanjung Karang Health Polytechnic. The Ruwa Jurai: Jurnal Kesehatan Lingkungan aims to publish quality articles in the environmental health and related scientific, as a reference for the development of science and technology, as well as increase public literacy for scientific articles. Abstract

River water in the Parit Banjar area, Pontianak, contains iron (Fe) levels that exceed acceptable limits for hygiene and sanitation use. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a combined treatment using Aloe vera gel as a natural coagulant and coconut shell charcoal as a filtration medium to reduce Fe concentration in river water. This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. Raw river water samples were treated with 40 grams of Aloe vera gel, stirred at 40 rpm for 2 minutes, allowed to stand for 60 minutes, and then filtered through coconut shell charcoal media with thickness variations of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 cm. Each treatment was repeated five times. Fe concentration was measured before and after treatment, and removal efficiency was calculated descriptively. The mean initial Fe concentration was 4.32 mg/L, while the control group showed a mean of 4.18 mg/L. Coagulation using Aloe vera gel alone reduced Fe to 3.56 mg/L with an efficiency of 17.44%. The combined treatment produced greater reductions at all filter thicknesses. The best result was obtained at 100 cm, reducing Fe to 0.55 mg/L with an efficiency of 87.36%. Increasing filter thickness consistently improved Fe removal. The combination of Aloe vera gel coagulation and coconut shell charcoal filtration was effective at reducing the Fe concentration in the Parit Banjar river water. A thicker filtration medium provided better removal performance, with 100 cm identified as the most effective condition.

Abstract

Livestock waste is a major source of environmental pollution in rural Indonesia. In general, livestock sanitation and household water quality are still assessed separately, so understanding of contamination pathways in upstream and downstream hydrological systems remains limited. This study aims to explore the spatial distribution of household water contamination associated with livestock waste sanitation and to classify environmental health risks along an upstream-downstream gradient. An exploratory environmental assessment was conducted in three descriptive sub-districts of Ponorogo Regency, representing the upstream (Pudak), transition (Pulung), and downstream (Sooko) areas. Fifteen household water samples were analyzed for microbiological parameters (total coliforms, Escherichia coli) and chemical parameters (BOD, nitrates, NH3), as well as for secondary data on cattle pen sanitation and river water quality. Data were analyzed descriptively and spatially using semi-quantitative risk classification based on exceeding national quality standards. 58% of cattle pens lacked adequate sanitation. BOD levels reached 14 mg/L (which was 2.33 times higher than the national standard), and NH₃ reached 0.64 mg/L (32 times higher). None of the household water samples were eligible for total microbiological testing. Gradients of increased contamination in upstream areas (Pudak) with moderate pollution loads, transition areas (Pulung) with moderate levels of contamination due to upstream exposure, and downstream (Sooko) with high contamination. Contamination patterns show an increased risk gradient from upstream to downstream waste sources. Improving cattle pen sanitation and livestock waste management in upstream areas is needed as a priority for environmental health interventions.

Abstract

Dengue fever remains a serious health problem due to its high morbidity and mortality. Given its potential future impacts, vulnerability maps are needed to guide the design of evidence-based control strategies. This study aims to develop a dengue fever vulnerability map by combining the AHP and weighted overlay techniques. This study used an ecological design and was conducted in Bandar Lampung City, Lampung Province. All secondary data were aggregated into percentages and used as sub-districts as spatial boundaries. The AHP method involved 20 informants to determine the weight of each variable (population density, water storage facilities, house index, and 3M behavior). The weighting results served as a reference for developing a dengue fever vulnerability map using the weighted overlay technique. Risk categories are distinguished by green (low), yellow (medium), and red (high). The AHP yielded the following weighted values for each variable: 30% (house index), 28.3% (3M behavior), 23.2% (water storage facilities), and 18.5% (population density). Based on the weighted overlay technique, five high-risk sub-districts were obtained (East Tanjungkarang, North Telukbetung, South Telukbetung, Bumi Waras, and Panjang), five medium-risk sub-districts (Langkapura, Kedaton, Central Tanjungkarang, Enggal, and East Telukbetung), and ten low-risk sub-districts (Rajabasa, Tanjung Senang, Labuhan Ratu, Sukarame, Kemiling, West Tanjungkarang, Way Halim, Kedamaian, Sukabumi, and West Telukbetung). GIS applications by combining the AHP and weighted overlay methods can be applied to develop dengue fever vulnerability maps.
