Abstract

The first education that every child gets is family education. Mother is the figure in the family who has the most role in providing education. Islamic values must begin to be embedded in a person since he was a child, especially for those who live in Muslim minority areas. This is because these Islamic values can be eroded by environmental influences. This study aims to analyze the role of women in maintaining the Islamic values of children in the Muslim minority area of Labuan Rasoki. This topic is important because women play a big role in maintaining the Islamic values of children in the non-Muslim majority community. This research uses a qualitative approach with the type of case study. Data collection techniques are interviews and observations. The data obtained were analyzed by triangulation technique. The results showed that there were 3 roles that a mother takes in maintaining the Islamic values of their children, namely through non-formal education at Madrasah Diniyah Awaliyah (MDA), informal education in the family environment; and formal education in public and private schools. Housewives are among the women who continue to fortify their children's Islamic values through educational assistance, so that Islamic values persist in their children even though they live in Muslim minority areas.

Abstract

This article is aimed at investigating how men and women are portrayed in Arsi Oromo proverbs.  To do this, proverbs are placed in their wider cultural context and philosophical outlook of the people. To this end, interview, focus group discussion and document analysis were used as a method of data collection to generate data on the topic under discussion. Contextual approach was exploited to analyze and synthesize raw data. Multifaceted nature and functions of proverbs are thoroughly discussed in the lens of cultural context. Thus, the finding of this research unveiled that there are many proverbs portraying both sexes positively and negatively when seen superficially. However, this research has concluded that (1) it is impossible to wrap up whether women are subordinate or not and men are dominant in Oromo culture by selecting proverbs in which women and men are directly or indirectly mentioned, (2) the philosophical outlook of the Oromo does not support the claim that proverbs are weapon for women’  inferiority and (3) proverbs which seem contradictory to each other are complementary and cannot give an insightful picture about gender philosophy of the society if detached from worldview of the society. Thus, proverbs should be placed in the worldview of the society from which they are flourished and their many edged functions/natures should be taken in to consideration.

Abstract

Examining about relationship between religious authorities and gender, this article is focused on portraying the life and career of a female cleric in West Sumatra, contemporary Indonesia. This research was conducted by interviewing and using ethnographic techniques towards the leadership of Fauziah Fauzan, Director of Diniyyah Puteri in Padang Panjang City. The findings of this study indicate that religious knowledge was not the only capital to be a female cleric, while leadership played an important role for the formation of women’s religious authority. By combining his ascribed authority with the ability to lead (leadership), Fauziah’s religious authority gained recognition by the community and the state. The longer experience of general education, compared to the background of his religious education, did not become an obstacle for Fauziah in contesting to obtain the religious authority which has traditionally been dominated by men. Using the two main theories of feminism, namely agency and freedom, as used by Saba Mahmood, this article was not only limited to help to understand how Fauziah’s achievements reflected the experience of a Muslim woman turning herself into an ethical subject and could be a community leader, but also a community leader. Her leadership was an alternative model of how a woman could gain religious authority in a Muslim society which was changing due to modernization.
