Abstract

Wayang Kamasan painting is one of the traditional Balinese painting forms that possesses significant historical, philosophical, and artistic values, and serves as an important part of traditional visual identity. However, visual documentation of Wayang Kamasan artworks remains limited and has not yet been systematically organized into a sustainable visual archive. The lack of structured documentary media has caused the visual records, visual conventions, and distinctive characteristics of Wayang Kamasan to be at risk of degradation and the loss of their authentic values. This study aims to apply a qualitative visual documentation approach in the design process of a Wayang Kamasan visual archive book as an effort to preserve traditional visual identity. The method used employs experimental stages with a documentation approach that includes the systematic collection, recording, and processing of visual data. Data collection was conducted through visual observation, interviews with artists and cultural practitioners, literature studies, and direct photographic documentation of artworks located in museums, art studios, and private collections. Through this documentation approach, the visual archive book is expected to function not only as a medium for storing visual data, but also as a strategy for preserving the traditional visual identity of Wayang Kamasan so that its existence can be maintained and passed on to future generations.

Abstract

The visual identity of Malay cultural arts faces a pressing relevance challenge in the digital era, particularly among Generation Z who have grown up with modern, minimalist, and fast visual preferences. This study aims to map the visual preferences of Generation Z toward Malay cultural arts and, based on those preferences, to formulate a conceptual framework for designing an adaptive Malay visual identity through a Design Thinking approach. The authors employed a descriptive quantitative survey, administered online to 51 respondents aged 17 to 27 years, complemented by thematic analysis of open-ended answers. The survey instrument was structured following the first three stages of Design Thinking, namely empathize, define, and ideate, hereafter called the diagnostic stages. Instrument reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, and the overall scale of 20 items reached α = 0.838, which is considered good for an exploratory descriptive study. The results show that Generation Z perceives the current visual representation of Malay culture as conventional and dated, with 70.6% rating it as either conventional or behind the times. The digital engagement disposition recorded the highest construct mean (M = 4.02 on a 5-point scale), and the statement that respondents grasp cultural values more easily through creative visuals than through long text reached the highest single mean (M = 4.29). In other words, Generation Z is willing to engage with Malay culture, provided that it is delivered in a visual and short-format manner. However, the preference for neutral colors recorded the lowest mean (M = 3.41), and the qualitative data confirmed that respondents want the Malay color palette and motifs to be retained rather than removed. Thus, the authors propose the Hybrid Malay Visual Identity Framework, hereafter called HMVIF, which integrates three dimensions: the cultural dimension, the contemporary aesthetic dimension, and the digital communication dimension. This framework is expected to serve as a practical reference for designing a Malay cultural visual identity that is modern, communicative, and rooted in local values, especially in the Riau Archipelago. Abstract

This study analyzes the content strategy of the Instagram account @binarmusik in increasing audience engagement through visual design, messaging, and content segmentation using a descriptive qualitative approach and content analysis of posts and account insights. The findings show that each content segment plays a distinct role, where informative content achieves higher reach, narrative and comparative content encourages comments, and curated content drives saving behavior. Visual elements such as color, typography, and layout help attract attention and improve readability, while message structure through hooks, informative captions, and calls to action enhances interaction. Overall, audience engagement is multidimensional and influenced by content characteristics, indicating that an integrated strategy combining visual elements, messaging, and segmentation effectively increases engagement on social media.

Abstract

Pasar Baru Jakarta, a historic commercial district established during the Dutch colonial period, has been officially recognized as a Cultural Heritage Area by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta. Despite its significant historical value and multicultural identity, the district currently faces several challenges, including the absence of an integrated wayfinding system, inconsistent visual signage elements, and ineffective communication of its heritage identity to visitors. This study seeks to design an Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) system to support the revitalization program of Pasar Baru Jakarta. This study employs the EGD Design Process proposed by Calori and Vanden-Eynden, which comprises three stages: Pre-Design, Design, and Post-Design. Data collection methods included field observations, visitor interviews, in-depth stakeholder interviews, competitor and comparator studies and expert validation. The findings indicate that the existing EGD elements do not constitute a coherent system owing to the lack of orientation signage, limited interpretive signage, and inconsistent visual standards. Based on these findings, a design concept entitled “Faces of Passer Baroe” was developed, incorporating the heritage architecture, multicultural identity, and colonial visual character of the district into an integrated-signage system. The final outputs encompass identificational, directional, orientation, regulatory, interpretive, and placemaking signage systems, along with an implementation guideline book titled “Passer Baroe: Signage and Wayfinding System Guidelines.” Expert validation confirmed that the design was visually, materially, and technically suitable for implementation in an urban heritage district.

Abstract

The increasingly competitive development of the barbershop industry demands that business actors have a strong and sustainable visual identity. Kanan Barbershop responds to this development through a barbering skills training program called Kanan School, as part of its brand longevity strategy, but until now Kanan School does not have a brand identity that is able to represent the character, values, and image of the program professionally and consistently. This study aims to design the Kanan School brand identity as an effort to strengthen the sustainability of the Kanan Barbershop brand. The method used in the design is artistic research with a qualitative approach through SWOT analysis and the glass box method. The design results in a visual identity designed to represent the values of professionalism, education, creativity, and the spirit of growth through elements of a mascot, barberpole, and sunburst. This design is expected to strengthen the positioning of Kanan School as a barbering training program while supporting the sustainability of the Kanan Barbershop brand.
