Abstract

ABSTRACT In response to persistent gaps in genetics literacy and the lack of validated assessment tools, this study developed and validated a 40-item multiple-choice assessment tool in undergraduate Genetics using Rasch modeling. The need for this tool arises from curriculum mandates, such as the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) framework, and global calls for equitable, high-quality science education aligned with SDG 4 and the OECD’s science competency benchmarks. Using a developmental research design, the tool was constructed based on key Genetics concepts aligned with the Philippine BSED Science curriculum. Items were reviewed by Genetics experts for content validity. The instrument was pilot-tested among 200 undergraduates using stratified random sampling to ensure representation across gender and academic backgrounds. Rasch analysis was conducted using R Studio (TAM and eRm packages) to evaluate item fit, unidimensionality, difficulty targeting, differential item functioning (DIF), and reliability. Results indicated that 33 of 40 items demonstrated good model fit, with a principal component analysis (PCA) eigenvalue of 1.9 supporting unidimensionality. The item-person map showed that item difficulty aligned well with student ability levels, with minimal ceiling and floor effects. DIF analysis confirmed measurement invariance across gender and academic background, with all DIF contrast values falling within ±0.5 logits. Reliability indices were high (KR-20 and Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.87), and person separation index was 2.6, confirming the tool’s capacity to differentiate among multiple ability levels. The study concludes that the developed tool is psychometrically sound, equitable, and instructionally valuable. It is recommended for use in undergraduate Genetics courses for diagnostic and summative assessment. Future research may expand the tool to broader domains in Genetics and evaluate its impact on instructional quality and student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) is a useful legume with short maturity and nitrogen-fixing capacity, which makes it suitable for poor farmers. In Sulu Province, it is of cultural importance as a vegetable crop and valued for medicinal value. But as demand has increased with expanding populations, so has its decline in production. In response, a field experiment was carried out from August 11 to November 25, 2021, at the Mindanao State University – Sulu, College of Agriculture Demo Farm. The research tested the impacts of organic fertilizers—cow manure and chicken dung—on Mungbean performance under Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three treatments and four replications. Results indicated that chicken dung significantly increased the yield and growth of the crop and resistance to the Mosaic Virus compared to cow dung. The outcome of these findings indicates the promise of chicken dung as a good organic fertilizer for improving Mungbean productivity and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

This study looks into how polygamy plays a role in the social growth of the Tausug community in Sulu, Philippines, focusing on its religious approval under Shari’ah law. Based on Islamic teachings, polygyamy isn't just a cultural tradition or personal choice—it's seen as a social institution that helps tackle issues like widowhood, gender imbalance, and creating resilient family units that can handle economic challenges. To acquire these, we employed methods like focus group discussions and interviews with religious scholars (Ulama), community leaders, and polygamous married couples. We monitored their attitudes and actions toward polygamy in different areas of Sulu. What we discovered is that most ulama are firm supporters of polygamy, that as long as it is practiced according to the Islamic teachings—being fair, equal, and economically capable—it can solidify the family and alleviate poverty and sinful acts. Hurdles to this, however, are a lack of general information on Islamic laws of marriage, premarital education is not practiced, and emotional or financial unreadiness. These issues sometimes lead to conflict and negative attitudes towards polygamy. The study is based on two basic theories: structural functionalism, which considers polygamy as fulfilling society's needs, and symbolic interactionism, which studies how cultural and religious interactions shape the perception of marriage. Limitations include a small sample size and some potential bias since the researcher’s own cultural background and interpretations might influence the findings. We also referenced the Qur'an (Surah An-Nisa 4:3) and authentic Hadiths to emphasize the spiritual roots of polygamy, and we’ve taken care to cite these more thoroughly. The study recommends that each couple be provided with access to Islamic family law training, Shari'ah courts, religious functionaries, and the local government. The study also recommends economic support schemes and public information campaigns to offset myths and encourage responsible practice of polygamy as a healthy community development force for the Tausug.

Abstract

This study assessed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) National Service Training Program-Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) program through identification of the demographic profile of the students and instructors. It also examined the student’s perception of the delivery, support system, and teaching outcome. The instructors assessed the program’s content and support system and identified the challenges they experienced. The study revealed the relationship between the challenges experienced by the instructors when grouped according to profile. The study used a quantitative-correlational research design using a researcher-made questionnaire to gather data from 251 students and 31 instructors from selected institutions where PCG has a memorandum of agreement for providing the program. The data showed that students were male second-years enrolled in maritime courses who attended primarily face-to-face classes. The instructors were mostly junior-ranked with limited years of service and little to no NSTP-CWTS-specific training. The students’ perception was generally positive. The instructors had effective communication, and the program was aligned with the training objectives, although concerns were raised about the sufficiency of the allocated time and adequacy of training materials. The curriculum was aligned with the national. The challenges experienced include resource availability, graduate deployment, and institutional collaboration with universities and LGUs. It was revealed significant relationships between the challenges experienced and specific demographic aspects such as unit assignment and years in service. The study suggested strengthening institutional partnerships, instructor training and development, improving logistical support, structuring the graduate deployment process, and program modification to match students' diversity and career aspirations.

Abstract

In the contemporary digitally interconnected society, social media exerts a pivotal influence on acquiring knowledge and skills, particularly among the youth. This research investigated the impact of social media exposure on the civic competencies of university students, aiming to develop an enrichment learning plan. Using a stratified sampling method, a survey questionnaire was administered to 100 students from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) BSED Department across all academic levels at a state university. The study utilized Pearson correlation analysis, revealing a significant and strong positive relationship between social media exposure and civic competencies. Key contributors to civic competencies identified were civic knowledge, 21st-century skills, and political engagement. The findings indicated that increased engagement with social media enhances students' civic competencies, as shown by a strong positive correlation (r = 0.69, p < 0.05). These results underscore the potential of social media as a valuable educational tool, suggesting the need for its integration into curricula to foster informed and active citizenship among students.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) in improving mathematics achievement among 70 Grade 7 students over an eight-week period at Bacongco National High School. Using a quasi-experimental design, it compares CAI with traditional lecture-based teaching through pretest and posttest assessments. Grounded in Constructivist, Behaviorist, and Cognitive Load theories, the research explores how CAI may enhance active learning, reduce cognitive overload, and increase engagement. Participants were split into two groups: one received CAI-based instruction, while the other followed traditional methods. Pretest results showed both groups performed at a “weak” level with nearly identical scores (CAI: 14.34%, traditional: 14.29%), indicating similar academic baselines. After the intervention, both improved to a “developing” level (CAI: 20.06%, traditional: 20.86%). However, statistical analysis found no significant difference in posttest scores or mean gain scores (CAI: 5.71%, traditional: 6.57%, p > 0.05). While both approaches were equally effective in enhancing performance, the short duration of the study (eight weeks) may have limited CAI’s impact. The findings suggest CAI should be seen as a complementary tool rather than a replacement for traditional instruction. The study recommends longer-term implementation, development of localized CAI materials, and teacher training to maximize benefits. It contributes to the broader discourse on educational technology by affirming the comparable effectiveness of CAI and traditional methods, while emphasizing the need for strategic planning, contextual adaptation, and institutional support to optimize technology integration in education.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to assess the level of teaching performance among public elementary school teachers in Magdalena District, Division of Laguna. Specifically, the study aimed to evaluate the teachers' behavioral skills and identify instructional challenges that may impact their performance. The findings of this research are intended to serve as the foundation for developing targeted intervention programs aimed at enhancing teacher effectiveness and promoting the delivery of quality education. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing survey questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations to gather data. A total of 100 public elementary school teachers from the Magdalena Sub-Office were selected as respondents.The results revealed significant positive relationships among behavioral skills, instructional challenges, and various dimensions of teaching performance. Notably, competencies such as effective communication, conflict resolution, and content delivery emerged as the most influential predictors of successful teaching outcomes. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing professional development focused on behavioral and instructional competencies. Furthermore, addressing issues related to resource availability and embracing classroom diversity were identified as critical factors in enhancing teaching performance. Overall, the study highlights the necessity for a comprehensive, skill-based approach to teacher development in order to foster a more effective and enriching educational environment.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the experiences of incarcerated women in female dormitory in Cebu City Jail on Therapeutic Community Modalities Program which specifically delved on the experiences, effects and aspirations of the informants in therapeutic community modality programs. This qualitative phenomenological study used an interview guide to explore the experiences of ten incarcerated mothers in the female dormitory of Cebu City Jail participating in the Therapeutic Community Modalities Program. The Collaizzi approach was applied to analyze the data and identify cluster themes and emergent themes characterizing the studied phenomena. Based on the results and findings of the study, nine (9) emergent themes were identified. For the experiences of the informants on therapeutic community modality program the following themes are formulated namely: Submissive to Routine Positive Behavioral Approach, A Family is Found Inside Prison, Regrets Always Comes in the End and There is No Such Thing as Free. For the effects of therapeutic community modality programs on the lives of the informants the following themes are formulated namely: Positive Behavioral Transformation, Improved Incarcerated Mothers-Child Communication and their Children and Unwavering Faith induce Self-Reliance. For the aspirations of informants the following themes are formulated namely: A Systematize Motherhood Behind Bars Program and Reward System for Every Significant Deed. Therapeutic Community Modality Program indeed serves as fortress of reformation among incarcerated mothers. However, like any other intervention program, it has to be monitored and evaluated for possible improvement so that it can addressed the rehabilitation and reformation needs of incarcerated mothers.

Abstract

This study explored the level of financial literacy among 68 cooperative members in Cateel, Davao Oriental. It aimed to examine the respondents' profiles in terms of age, gender, educational background, and income level, and to assess financial literacy across four dimensions: financial knowledge, behavior, awareness, and attitudes. Using weighted mean and ANOVA for data analysis, the study identified significant differences in financial literacy based on demographic factors. Results showed that most respondents were young and had varied educational backgrounds. Financial behavior significantly differed by age (p < 0.05), while educational attainment had a significant impact on financial knowledge, behavior, and attitude (p < 0.05), and a near-significant effect on overall financial literacy. Gender differences were significant in financial behavior, attitude, and overall financial literacy. However, no significant differences were found based on income level or prior financial literacy training. These findings underscore the importance of designing targeted financial education interventions that address age-, gender-, and education-related disparities to improve financial literacy among cooperative members.

Abstract

A study aimed to develop a Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) in science for Grade 6 learners at Tungao Central Elementary School. Observations showed that many students struggled with core science concepts, specifically differentiating between solutes and solvents, describing suspensions, and understanding mixture separation methods such as decantation and the use of magnets. Student performance on first-quarter science tests was evaluated, with 91 learners participating. Two experts assessed the SIMs for quality, accuracy, relevance, and contextualization, leading to refinements. The developed SIMs include guide cards, activity cards, assessment cards, enrichment activities, reference cards, and answer keys. Results highlight the crucial need for context-specific educational interventions to address learning deficits in science. Incorporating contextually relevant materials can significantly enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes. The contextualized SIMs offer a practical solution for improving student comprehension and performance in challenging scientific concepts, thereby contributing to more effective teaching and learning strategies within the local educational context.
