Abstract

Games have been used and proven effective in motivating students. Playing interactive games can enhance learning (Lieberman, 2006). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of computer-based interactive games in teaching students who are struggling to learning concepts in Physical Science. It also determined to identify the students’ attitudes towards the use of computer-based interactive games. This study utilized pre-test and post-test designs. Respondents for this study were Grade 11 struggling learners and were determined based on the learners’ general average grade during the first semester. The two experimental treatment groups were randomly assigned. One group was taught using computer-based interactive games as an intervention, while the other did not have any teaching intervention. Both groups had regular class instruction in Physical Science and were taught the same content and the same amount of time. The findings reveal that upon exposure to computer-based interactive games, struggling students’ performance in science concepts as described by their pre-test and post-test scores were statistically different with the performance of the struggling students using the lecture-discussion approach. The result implies that students enhanced by the computer-based interactive games approach performed at par with those exposed to traditional learning. Hence, the use of computer-based interactive games in teaching Physical Science concepts is recommended, in addition to regular class instruction. It is suggested that science teachers, especially senior high school teachers who teach Physical Science, should integrate and use computer-based interactive games since it promotes a better understanding of the lesson.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Teachers and students to move into Online Distance Learning in the Philippines to continue providing quality education. The study centers on two factors the Challenges and Coping Strategies of Maritime Instructors and Students in an Online Distance Learning (ODL) Environment of Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College. A total of 157 respondents were involved in the study and distribution of questionnaires was done thru online. The descriptive and quantitative method of research is used in this study. As a result both the students and teachers used smartphones and laptop in Online Distance Learning but majority of the students have postpaid subscription service (42.38%) with an unstable and slow internet connectivity. Furthermore, the Challenges of Maritime Instructors and Students in an Online Distance Learning (ODL) Environment, the respondents generally answered “rarely” to the given statements as to academic requirements(M=2.08 and M=2.33), Learning Management System (M=1.96 and M=2.30), delivery of instructions (M=2.17 and 2.39) while data from learning environment (M=2.78 and M=2.73) is interpreted as "sometimes," inferring that the respondents perceived the learning environment as the biggest challenge out of the four. The coping strategies of Maritime Instructors and Students in ODL the students generally answered "sometimes" to the given scenarios while the instructors generally answered "often." Meanwhile, the results show that the instructors preferred utilizing the Internet to their advantage for researching lessons and similarly to the students, setting specific time to prepare for school work are the best coping strategies for them. There is no significant difference and relationship on the Challenges and Strategies of Maritime Instructors and Students in an Online Distance Learning (ODL) Environment. Thus, to address the challenge regarding the learning environment and the poor internet connection, the findings of the study recommend that students and instructors must set time to prepare for schoolwork, create notes to better understand/deliver a lesson, and find another place for better learning/teaching and lesser distractions.

Abstract

One of today’s major problems in higher education system is the academic failure of medical science students with apparent yearly reports of experiencing probation, insufficient medical knowledge, increase educational semester, and drop out incidences. This study aims to predict the revalidation examination score of the Radiologic Technology interns of a higher education institution in Iligan City. An exploratory research with descriptive correlation design was used to investigate the interrelationship between the predicting variables in this study. The researchers adopted the Grit-S Scale structured questionnaire that was developed by Duckworth and Quinn (2009), which was designed to measure the grit level of respondents. This tool was used to elicit the needed primary data on the currently enrolled 26 radiologic technology interns at a higher institution in Iligan City. The survey was administered online via Google form. The secondary data, which constitutes of monthly examination score, case study scores, and revalidation examination was solicited in the CRT Program Head. Census sampling was employed in this research to obtain a more satisfactory response. The study showed that the indicators in monthly examination obtained a total mean of 31.64 with an SD of 14.35. These low scores were manifested in their performance in revalidation examination, which revealed a total mean score of 52.73 with a ± 16.02 SD. On the contrary, the respondents obtained high scores in case study with overall mean score of 95.42 and an SD of ± 2.83. The overall grit level of the respondents demonstrated a moderate description. Furthermore, the findings of this study also revealed that there is a significant relationship between monthly examination and revalidation examination. The strength of correlation is direct and strong as revealed by the coefficient of 0.904. Meanwhile, there is no significant relationship between revalidation examination score and case study score (p=0.537); between revalidation examination score and grit level (p=0.833); between grit level and monthly examination score (p=0.831) and between grit level and case study score (p=0.071). The positive influence of monthly examination implies that respondents who scored high in the monthly examination would be predicted to score high also in the revalidation examination. These findings can help the faculty and program head in drafting policies and the improvement of academic and clinical performance of students in revalidation exam.

Abstract

The primary concern of this research paper was to relate how Grade 12 students of Meycauayan National High School perceived research subjects such as Practical Research 2 and how these attitudes toward research affected their research skills development. With the purpose of bridging the link between the affective domains of learning to how students develop their research skills, the researcher used the Attitude Towards Research (ATR) Scale developed by Papanastasiou (2002) and a Research Skills Assessment Test based on Gilmore and Feldon (2010). These instruments were administered to 60 Grade 12 Senior High School students of MNHS across different strands, while accompanied with Active Learning Classroom Strategies in teaching Practical Research 2. Through pre-test and post-test design, the researcher evaluated the impact of the students’ attitudes toward research in five (5) factors. These five factors were generalized as Post-ATR and was correlated to the Final Grades of the respondents in Practical Research 2. Upon data analysis using t-test and correlational statistics, it was highlighted that participants were more focused on how Research subjects are with utmost relevance and usefulness to their everyday lives, though, many of them still gave concern on anxiety and difficulty of the subject. It was also evident that in general, how students feel about research has a great impact on how they develop their research skills along the course. Through this study that found that improved attitudes toward research significantly increased the students’ research skill and with the help of the data analyzed in this paper, the researcher encourage teachers to not only focus on students’ cognitive and psychomotor skills but to give equal importance as well with the attitudes toward research as these would contribute to students’ overall research skill development.
