Abstract

The challenges brought about by the COVID- 19 pandemic was not only on the health, economic, and medical sector. It also brought about drastic changes to the education sector. With the "No Child Would Be Left Behind" philosophy, the Department of Education ensured that classes would push through without face-to-face communication. This policy led to various Online Distance Learning (ODL) designs per Division or locality. This qualitative study done through narrative inquiry aims to determine the different challenges experienced and recommendations proposed by the ODL teachers in the actual delivery of education at this time of pandemic and inputs for a better implementation of the school learning continuity plan. Responses from fifteen participants from the Division of Dasmarinas yielded experiences by which various themes were extracted from the participants. Written interviews were sent to many public elementary and high school teachers experiencing the Online Distance Learning provided and designed by the Department of Education, and fifteen responded. Results have shown that the system processes affect both teachers and students. Thus, further study must be done to perfect the Learning Continuity Plan design, specifically ODL. It may be an abrupt change brought by the pandemic, but a more intensive and careful plan must be done for problems are coming in the chain and bigger.

Abstract

The proliferation of science and technology in society allows learners to be more informed about the changes and developments in society and education. Moreover, literacy evolved from the conventional way of reading and writing to applying and accessing information from a digital environment. Hence, this paper aims to look into a way to extrapolate the correlation of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) literacy and self-efficacy of Junior High School students in one private school in the district of Obando, Bulacan, Philippines. Using a descriptive-correlation research design, the researcher believes a significant correlation between and among variables. The chosen respondents for the study consisted of one hundred and thirty-five (135). The findings of the study revealed that Junior High School students had moderate literacy towards ICT. Also, this study found out that the Junior High School students described their ICT self-efficacy as moderately agreeing. Furthermore, results of the correlational analysis using Pearson r revealed that the ICT literacy of Junior High School students was significantly correlated to their ICT self-efficacy. It is recommended that the schools include this area in their annual improvement plan under the students’ services affairs. Schools should pay attention to this since majority of the private schools now at the height of integrating ICT in the school system and further uplift the ICT literacy and self-efficacy of Junior High School students toward ICT integration through an enhancement program.

Abstract

Language use is important in a community such as composed of people living with mental health conditions. The researcher aimed to understand depressive language more deeply by looking at the linguistic features, unravelling the process of language consumption as evidenced in the language experiences of depressed people, and determining the dominant ideological representations. Using the 3-Dimensional Framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, the researcher made a thorough investigation on depressive language on Facebook. In the textual analysis, it was revealed that depressive language contains certain linguistic features such as lexical items belonging to different categories, use of self-references, presence of positive and emotions words, and occurrence of words related to status, dominance, and social hierarchy. In the interview with seven depressed people, language experiences include the use of language for various purposes such as for expressing, fighting stigma, getting help, and educating other people. The participants also shared that language could be a reason for triggers and stigma. Based on the linguistic features and the language experiences, it was also found out that certain ideologies are dominant in depressive language such as the existence of stigma in society, death as an escape from pain, inevitability of sadness, and continuous seeking of help and attention. This study is deemed important in advancing more studies in the Philippine context focusing on mental health and language use.

Abstract

Purpose- Our study aims to empirically examine the influence of different economic indicators such as the global GDP growth rate and the global GDP per capita growth rate on the number of small and medium businesses (SMEs) around the world. In this article, we explored the challenges that SMEs face worldwide during the establishment process and various governments provide policies and regulations that promote and secure SME growth and development. Design/methodology/approach- This study presents a combination of time-series statistical analysis and analysis of literature gathered from published sources. A statistical analysis of the number of small and medium-sized businesses around the world is presented in the paper in relation to global GDP (current US dollars), global GDP growth rates (annual percent), and global GDP per capita (annual percent). Findings- Two determinants, Global GDP Growth rate and Global GDP Per Capita growth rate, are found as significant regressors. In addition, the number of SMEs worldwide during the previous year had a significant impact on the current year. Research limitations- limited availability of government sources of data are the biggest hindrance. In this study we relied on the statistics published by STATISTA, knowing that it’s a private company that maintains business statistics. Practical implications- SMEs have a significant impact on the economy that cannot be ignored. The government of some countries has commissioned a network of technology centers, tool rooms, and extension centers in collaboration with the private sector and foreign governments. These measures are a collective effort to support SMEs, preserve millions of jobs, and encourage domestic investments which will ultimately sustain the country's economic growth. Originality/value- In comparison with reviewed literature, this study focuses more on the regressors and regressands using statistical tools and the variables of interest.

Abstract

The problem of the Covid-19 pandemic that occurred in all parts of Indonesia including the economic growth and the determinants of economic growth were very diverse, including public consumption, inflation and the development of the human index. Stable economic growth had an important impact on people's welfare. There were various factors that can influence economic growth, including public consumption, inflation and the human growth index (IPM). This study aimed to determine the effect of public consumption on community growth, determine the effect of inflation on economic growth, the effect of the human growth index (HDI) on economic growth, and the effect of community consumption, inflation, human growth index (HDI) on economic growth in West Java. The method used was a quantitative method. The data were processed using SPSS 21. The data were taken from the Central Statistics Agency of West Java. The data is in the form of time series from 2015 to 2020. The results of the study explain that there is an influence of community consumption on community growth, there was an effect of inflation on economic growth, and there was an influence of the human growth index (HDI) on economic growth, and the influence of community consumption, inflation, HDI on economic growth in West Java Indonesia. The government should decreased the inflation.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental period that requires parents and youth to renegotiate their relationships (Laursen et al., 2009). Despite being an individual who can take increasing responsibility, an adolescent still needs more protection and guidance (Sawyer, et al., 2018), therefore, the relationship with their parents is crucial. This study explored the impact of parent-adolescent relationships on the academic outcome of Senior High School students in the National Capital Region of the Philippines, focusing on 4 of its dimensions in terms of the adolescents' (a) social interaction, (b) independence, (c) self-expression, and (d) academic performance. Bodies of related literature were also reviewed to assure the reliability and accuracy of this study. Results showed that there is no significant relationship between the parent-adolescent relationship and the General Weighted Average of the students. Despite that, reviewed literature indicated that adolescents who had high levels of parent-adolescent attachment were more likely to have high levels of self-worth, which in turn enhanced their academic engagement and then improved high school grades (Chen, 2017). The researchers recommend future researchers fill the gaps this research has by conducting a study in a larger sample size to give more reliable results with greater precision and power. Future studies about the parent-adolescent relationship may focus on other dimensions aside from the four dimensions explored in this study.

Abstract

This study investigated the contributing factors that affect the module completion of Grade 12 students in Governor Alfredo M. Abueg Sr. National Technology and Vocational Memorial High School, Brooke’s Point, Palawan. A descriptive-correlation method was utilized as the research design of this study. A validated researcher-made questionnaire written in English which was based on a 5-point Likert Scale was distributed to a sample of 46 regular Grade 12 students. Respondents were randomly selected from seven (7) different Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) courses. Findings revealed that most of the respondents belong to the age bracket of 17 or below, female, were living within the town and were with closely approximating proficiency in their General Weighted Average (GWA). Students rated “sometimes” that their module completion was affected by the factors such as the content of the Self-Learning Module, parental support, internet connection, social media, health condition, and proximity of the house from the school. The result of the regression analysis has shown that there was a weak association between teacher support and location as well as between internet connection and GWA of the student. Furthermore, the intervention measure was designed by the researcher. The findings of this study provided inputs to school heads and teachers to formulate intervention programs and policy development on the factors affecting students’ module completion.

Abstract

In the advent of the “new normal” during the pandemic era, strategies to teach and learn switched to online. Students’ behavior and attitude also shifted from face-to-face to online. This study aims to assess the students' profiles and the prevalence of cyberbullying in the higher education institutions in Central Luzon, Philippines. The study used a descriptive-correlational technique with the help of an online survey to gather data. Using a convenience sampling technique, 300 higher education students participated in the online survey during the first semester of 2021–2022. In order to attain the objective of the study, the investigators used a standardized instrument. With the help of SPSS 23, the data analyst analyzed the gathered data using the following statistical tools: frequency, weighted mean, and non-parametrical tests like Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman rho. The investigator found that the student-respondents were "never" cyberbullying victims or offenders. Furthermore, statistical inferences showed a variation for cyberbullying offenders as to age and sponsorship/scholarship and a weak indirect relationship between cyberbullying offenders and sponsorship/scholarship characteristics of the students. The investigators recommended pertinent implications for the new normal of learning among students and the institution from the study results.

Abstract

The financial environment of a company is a main factor for the business success, especially SMEs forced to be highly efficient in allocating their limited resources to ensure survival and generate profits by financial constraints. This study aimed to look into the relationship of financial decision skills among managers of SMEs and business performance in Dapitan and Dipolog Cities, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines during calendar year 2018. The study utilized the quantitative method. A standardized questionnaire checklist was made. The respondents were managers and employees. Secondary data from financial statement was also utilized, and the use of financial ratio was made in determining the business performance of SMEs. The main statistical tools used were frequency count, mean computations, analysis of variance, and Pearson r product moment coefficient of correlation. The study revealed that managers of Small and Medium Enterprises in Dapitan and Dipolog Cities only exhibits intuitive skill to cash ratio and rational skill to debt ratio. These findings support the claim that managers or owners practice intuitive skills and rational skills were effective in dealing their financial obligations. The researcher recommended that managers of SMEs should participate in training and seminars to enhance and develop the exact skills in financial decision-making that are attributable to the business performance.

Abstract

Deep learning is required to examine biological material, particularly abstract content, either in the laboratory alone or with internet literature. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of learning through practicum versus learning through a combination of practicum (real-world data) and online literature review in terms of the ability to represent the three-dimensional (3D) model of plant tissue structure in a plant anatomy course. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design in the posttest alone control group. This research used Purposive sampling to choose the research sample, which consisted of two classes of students enrolled in a plant anatomy course. ANOVA was used to analyze the data, with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated a significant difference in learning when combined practicum was with online literature study visuospatial when practicum was used alone with a more excellent 3D model representation value in the class. Classes that combine an applied practicum with an online literature review have a grade point average of 73.61.
