Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden paradigm shift in education worldwide. To ensure that education would be undisrupted, many countries, including the Philippines, shifted from the usual face-to-face classes to distance learning modalities such as modular, online and blended. With these rapid changes, mathematics teachers were confronted with a lot of uncertainties. To investigate the challenges they encountered in assessing their students’ learning during the remote setting, this study used a descriptive research design. Data were gathered through online questionnaires in Google form and informal interviews among 268 secondary mathematics teachers from the different divisions in Bicol Region, Philippines. Thematic analysis was utilized in the analysis of qualitative data. Results show challenges in terms of the quality of outputs, materials and resources, students’ performance and feedback mechanism. On a positive note, they regarded the pandemic as an opportunity for professional advancement and pedagogical flexibility. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden paradigm shift in education worldwide. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a significant shift towards modular distance learning in education systems worldwide. In the Philippines, the Department of Education has developed Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) to ensure quality primary education for all learners during the pandemic. This research study aims to identify the challenges and effectiveness of the modular distance learning approach on the academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students at Botolan National High School. Employing a descriptive research design, data were collected through a validated questionnaire and analyzed using weighted arithmetic mean, frequency, percentage distribution, and Pearson-r correlation. The study found that the majority of student-respondents were female, aged 17.31 years old, and achieved very satisfactory academic grades. The students perceived the modular distance learning approach as agreeable, with self-motivation being the most challenging aspect. The ability to express ideas was the most effective aspect, while the ability to answer without pressure was the least effective. The study found no significant relationship between student's perceptions of the modular distance learning approach and their academic performance. Based on the findings, the study recommends using the modular distance learning approach and developing policies to address students' mental health issues. Furthermore, further research is needed to investigate teacher readiness and technology competency, as well as other variables not covered in this study, to improve the effectiveness of the modular distance learning approach. The study demonstrates that despite the limitations caused by the pandemic, modular distance learning can be an efficient alternative to traditional face-to-face education.

Abstract

Poor financial management, which results in financial problems, affects one’s productivity in the workplace; thus, an individual cannot perform competently once preoccupied with financial distress. This study aimed to investigate whether financial knowledge, financial attitude, and locus of control significantly predict the financial management behavior of the public secondary school teachers in a municipality of Davao de Oro, Philippines. The researcher used the descriptive-correlational research design. The respondents were 192 purposively chosen secondary school teachers in the East and West districts in the municipality of Davao de Oro for the school year 2021-2022. Sets of adapted survey questionnaires were used in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as Pearson’s r and regression analysis. Findings reveal that financial knowledge was evident, financial attitude and financial management behavior were favorable, while the locus of control was manifested. Moreover, financial knowledge, financial attitude, and locus of control were significantly correlated with financial management behavior. However, only financial knowledge and locus of control could significantly predict financial management behavior in its individual capacity. Thirty-five percent of the variation in financial management behavior could be attributed to the combined influence of these factors.

Abstract

In education, ensuring that students develop the necessary knowledge and skills is critical, especially when faced with challenges in learning delivery. The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has implemented the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) to guide the curriculum and instruction in all public schools. MELCs were developed in response to the changing educational landscape brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. MELCs aim to ensure that students gain the necessary competencies and skills for future success. The goal of MELCs is to ensure that students acquire the necessary competencies and skills that are essential for their future success. MELCs assist educators in designing and delivering effective learning experiences that align with the needs and goals of the curriculum. This study investigated the impact of utilizing Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) on the academic development of Grade Six students in public schools in the Philippines during the academic year 2021-2022. Data was collected from 173 teachers and 67 master teachers using a descriptive research design. Results showed that MELCs were highly utilized in aligning lessons to content-area standards, providing flexible activities, congruent lesson planning, delivering assessment questions, and planning a learning process. Grade Six students showed outstanding cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development through the use of MELCs. However, teachers faced challenges such as lack of cooperation from parents and students, lack of financial resources, and lack of learning resources. Recommendations include seeking parental cooperation, providing additional learning resources, establishing a monitoring system, and offering interventions for students.

Abstract

Incorporating the Agile Project Management (APM) approach was the institution’s initiative to accelerate project delivery and be more flexible in changing requirements and client demands while producing quality software. The research explores the lived experiences of the institution's project managers to uncover the challenges and demonstrated benefits during Agile Project Management (APM) implementation. This research utilized the qualitative approach through interviews with key informants who are project managers of the institution. The data gathered were from the responses of the five (5) private-owned financial institution project managers. The responses were thoroughly reviewed and tabulated to reveal the commonalities in the data gathered. The study showed that implementing APM significantly changed how the project management team handled and delivered the projects. The project management team moved the project with agility by simplifying the scope and adapting to changes in requirements to increase customer satisfaction and value; the teams were more collaborative, flexible, and able to cope with the risks. However, the study revealed that the main challenges that the project management team experienced were the uncontrollable growth of changes in project scope, under-estimated timelines, and inefficient allocation and delegation of workloads, which resulted in the delayed delivery of projects. Also, it revealed that the current coping strategies were deprioritizing other projects to accommodate new requirements, extending project deadlines, and rendering overtime, which could have been more sustainable when appropriately handled. Furthermore, the study provided recommendations and action plans to improve the implementation of Agile Project Management.
