Abstract

This study aims to improve the argumentative clarify of EFL student at Muslim Satun Wittaya School through the application of a systematically designed phrase writing formula. The background of this study  stems from the difficulties experienced by students in writing argumentative texts due to differences in the linguistic structures of Malay, Thai, and English, which often cause language interference. The research method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles involving 25 high school sophomore students. Data were collected through writing tests, teacher and student observation sheets, field notes, and documentation. The results show a significant improvement in students’ argumentative writing skills. The average writing score increased from 46.80 in the pre-cycle to 56.04 in Cycle I, and jumped to 85.48 in Cycle II. Teacher activity also increased from a score of 69 to 94, while student activity rose from 73.64 to 86.04. These findings prove that the phrase writing formula can function as effective scaffolding in helping students construct clearer, more coherent, and structured arguments. This study recommends the use of phrase formulas as a pedagogical strategy in argumentative writing instruction in a multilingual EFL context

Abstract

This paper examines the essence of education from an ontological perspective by analyzing the fundamental relationship between God, human beings, and nature. Using an ontological-philosophical approach and library research, this study draws on classical and contemporary literature in philosophy of education, metaphysics, and epistemology. The analysis shows that education is not merely a process of knowledge transmission, but a humanizing and transcendental endeavor that integrates divine values, human potential, and the natural order. Ontology-based education positions humans as rational and spiritual beings with ethical and ecological responsibility as part of divine purpose. The study concludes that education should be reformulated toward an integrative and holistic paradigm that unites spiritual, intellectual, and ecological dimensions.

Abstract

Education plays an important role in preserving cultural values and customs passed down from generation to generation while continuously adapting to societal changes. In the context of regional development, mastering ASEAN identity is essential for students to understand ASEAN member countries, their characteristics, and shared values. Low levels of curiosity among students can be addressed through the use of interactive and engaging learning media. This study aimed to determine the relationship between recognition of ASEAN identity and students’ curiosity at the Pandan Learning Centre in Malaysia. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design involving students as research participants. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using a correlation test. The results showed a significance value of Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant relationship between ASEAN identity recognition and students’ curiosity. Therefore, it can be concluded that a higher level of ASEAN identity recognition is associated with increased curiosity among students.

Abstract

This study explores how Selena Gomez intentionally switches between English and Spanish in her song "Ojos Tristes" to deepen emotional impact and express her cultural identity. While bilingual music has gained more attention from researchers, there’s still a need to better understand the ways artists use language switching creatively in popular American music today. By closely analyzing the lyrics using established theories on code-switching, the study highlights three types switching between sentences, within sentences, and small inserted phrases that serve specific emotional and cultural purposes. The findings show that English tends to express calm, reasoned feelings, whereas Spanish conveys more personal and heartfelt emotions, reflecting Gomez’s blend of two cultures. Ultimately, the research shows that code-switching here isn’t random but a thoughtful artistic choice that challenges single-language expectations and celebrates the richness of bilingual expression in mainstream music.

Abstract

The widespread use of social media has significantly shaped students’ communication patterns, yet its specific impact on the quality of academic writing remains underexplored, particularly among English language education students in Indonesian tertiary institutions. Addressing this gap, the present study examines how social media language influences the academic writing performance of 10 students in the English Education Department at Al Mawaddah Warrahmah Islamic Science University Kolaka. Data were collected through a questionnaire measuring students’ social media usage and perceptions, alongside an analytical writing task in the form of a short academic essay to identify the presence of informal language features. These features included abbreviations, slang, code-switching, and unconventional punctuation. The findings indicate that frequent social media engagement contributes to the unintentional transfer of informal expressions into academic writing. A total of 31 informal language instances were identified, with Pearson correlation analysis showing a moderate negative relationship (r = –0.42) between social media use and writing accuracy. Despite this, several students reported positive effects such as increased confidence, fluency, and exposure to new vocabulary. In conclusion, social media language exerts a dual influence—diminishing formality and accuracy while enhancing certain aspects of language development. These findings highlight the need for educators to incorporate digital literacy and targeted academic writing instruction to help students manage informal language interference and optimize the benefits of online language exposure.

Abstract

The use of linguistic coding in advertising discourse constitutes an important communicative strategy that reflects the diversity of language structures employed in marketing practices. The deliberate integration of multiple languages in advertisements serves not only to attract audience attention but also to support the preservation and visibility of regional languages through contemporary media platforms. This study aims to investigate instances of code-switching and code-mixing in food and beverage advertisement compilation videos uploaded by Rofif Satria on  the YouTube Satria Channel. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through systematic observation and note-taking procedures. Each advertisement video was carefully examined, and all verbal and written elements were transcribed. Instances of code-switching and code-mixing were then identified, classified, and documented. The collected data were organized according to their linguistic forms and categorized based on the types of code-switching and code-mixing present. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing occur frequently in advertising discourse, encompassing both internal and external forms. These phenomena include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, and baster elements. Contextual analysis of linguistic units at the word, phrase, and clause levels is essential for interpreting their communicative functions within advertisements. Overall, the results demonstrate that code-switching and code-mixing play a significant role in advertising language, functioning as effective communication strategies while contributing to the maintenance of linguistic diversity

Abstract

Oral presentations are often used in English courses to improve speaking skills. However, there is still little research about how students see their benefits in building speaking confidence, especially in university settings. This study aims to explore university students’ perceptions of the benefits of oral presentations in English classes. Even though oral presentations can help improve speaking skills, many students still face challenges such as low confidence, anxiety, limited vocabulary, and difficulty in organizing ideas. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with interviews, observations, and documentation as the main data sources. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to find common patterns. The results show that the main factors affecting students’ oral presentations are speaking anxiety, lack of vocabulary, little experience in public speaking, and fear of making mistakes. To deal with these problems, students used strategies such as repeated practice, using media, managing time, and getting support from lecturers and peers. This study shows the importance of oral presentations in developing speaking confidence and suggests that teachers need to provide better strategies to support students in English learning.
