Abstract

This article investigates emerging patterns of religious literacy and Islamic identity formation among university students in Indonesia, particularly within public and Islamic higher education institutions. Through mixed-methods research involving surveys, focus group discussions, and document analysis, the study identifies a significant shift in students’ modes of engaging with Islamic knowledge—from conventional textual study to digital platforms such as social media, online preachers, and algorithm-driven content. The findings reveal variations in students’ interpretive frameworks, ranging from textual-literal to contextual-progressive orientations, influenced by digital ecosystems and campus environments. While online access has democratized religious learning, it has also created fragmented understanding and susceptibility to polarized discourses. The study argues that universities must redesign Islamic education programs to strengthen critical digital literacy, foster dialogical engagement, and cultivate balanced Islamic worldviews. By analyzing how young Indonesians negotiate personal faith, social identity, and mediated religious authorities, this research offers insights into the dynamic landscape of contemporary Islamic religiosity in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This article investigates the United Arab Emirates’ pioneering efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into Qur’an learning and Islamic education, with a particular focus on the ethical considerations surrounding technology-mediated religious instruction. Drawing on interviews with developers, educators, and policymakers, the study examines AI applications such as automated tajwīd evaluation, personalized memorization pathways, and adaptive learning analytics. Findings suggest that AI enhances efficiency, accessibility, and learner motivation, especially among digital-native students. However, concerns arise regarding data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential reduction of human spiritual guidance. The article argues that the ethical deployment of AI in Islamic education requires responsible design, regulatory frameworks, and complementary teacher roles. This study provides a critical contribution to emerging scholarship on digital religion and the future of Islamic pedagogy.

Abstract

This article examines the ongoing transformation of Islamic education curriculum in Indonesia as the country promotes the national agenda of religious moderation. The study explores how Islamic schools and universities negotiate the tension between digital integration—accelerated by the expansion of online learning—and the preservation of pesantren values that emphasize character formation, spiritual discipline, and traditional scholarship. Using a qualitative approach, data are drawn from curriculum documents, interviews with educators, and observations of instructional practices in selected institutions. Findings reveal that digital learning environments have broadened access to Islamic knowledge but simultaneously challenge the depth of interpersonal transmission central to pesantren pedagogy. The curriculum reforms highlight a hybrid model that seeks to balance technological innovation with ethical, cultural, and theological continuity. The paper argues that successful integration depends on strengthening teachers’ digital pedagogical competence while ensuring that core religious values remain integral to instructional design. This study contributes to understanding how Muslim-majority countries can harmonize modernization and tradition within Islamic education systems.

Abstract

This article explores the role of Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) and the national Islamic education curriculum in promoting the discourse of wasatiyyah, or Islamic moderation, among secondary school students. Employing content analysis and semi-structured interviews with curriculum developers and teachers, the study investigates how concepts of balance, tolerance, and ethical coexistence are embedded within teaching materials and classroom practices. Findings show that JAKIM’s policy direction strongly influences curricular emphasis on moderation, countering extremism, and strengthening national unity. However, variations in teacher interpretation and pedagogical approaches affect the consistency of implementation. The paper argues that achieving meaningful internalization of wasatiyyah requires enhancing teacher training, integrating real-life case studies, and fostering dialogical learning environments. This research contributes to broader discussions on state-led religious discourse and curriculum-based strategies for promoting social harmony in multicultural societies.
