Teachers in general and language teachers in particular are expected to assess various aspects of their teaching and learning. To achieve this, they are believed to familiar with different dimensions of assessment in general and classroom assessment in particular. Language teaching and assessment are two interrelated notions that affect each other to a great extent. Undoubtedly, language assessment is one of the most significant and complicated activities in the field of language teaching. The present study investigated assessment related perception and practices of Iranian EFL teachers. As assessment literacy questionnaire was distributed to 30 Iranian EFL teachers who were selected from two branches of private language institute, three teachers with high assessment literacy knowledge and three teachers with relatively low assessment literacy based on result of assessment literacy questionnaire were interviewed. The result of both qualitative and quantitative data indicated that EFL teachers` assessment literacy has meaningful and significant impact on Assessment efficiency in classroom. Teachers with high assessment literacy have a structured lesson plan and also know their learners` strengths and weaknesses clearly. This study suggest language policy makers to motivate language teachers to be assessment literate.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of learning Discourse Analysis (DA) by applying metaphorically-based materials. Both the design of qualitative and quantitative study is applied in the present study with 60 student subjects of English Literature Study Program ofthe Faculty of Languages and Arts Universitas Negeri Medan, Indonesia. The subjects were divided into two groups: Experimental and Control Group, each with 30 sudents which is parallel in terms of level of intellectuality and learning facilities. The Control Group studentswere taught the lecture of DA by applying conventional material and model of learning or lecturing whereas the Experimental Group were taught by applying metaphorically-based materials of DA. The students’ achievements were obtained by administering the test and the scores of the two groups were compared and processed by applying t-test at the significance level of a = 0.05 with two-tailed test. It is found that the t-obs value is 2.764 exceeding or being greater than that of the t-tab value of 2.00 (2.764>2.000) where the Ho is rejected implying that the Ha is accepted verifying that learning the lecture of DA is significantly more effective by using metaphorically-based materials than by applying conventional materials or lecturing.

Abstract

This study examines the aesthetics of three Kasena traditional prayers performed in devotion to Kukula, a divinity revered by the Kasena of the Upper East Region of Ghana. These prayers are performed orally and have not received any literary study in Kasem; this study is therefore aimed at filling this gap by looking at the aesthetics in this prayers. Four different prayers were recorded and transcribed by the researcher; these prayers were collected from Kayᴐrᴐ, a village in the Kasena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. We define these prayer texts as being part of Kasem oral literature. The literary theory of structuralism is adopted for this study. The instruments I used in collecting the information for this study included, voice recorder, video recorder, while the researcher used active participatory method of observation and data elicitation in the data collection. The analysis reveals that the officiant in their performances of these prayers use native poetic devices such as; proverbs, rhetorical questions, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, synecdoche, symbolism, imagery and repetitions of varying degrees. They also use allusions, alliteration and assonance. The study of these prayers reveals that these performers have a mastery of many artistic devices native to Kasem. In conclusion the study clearly shows that even though the officiants of these traditional prayers are merely performing religious activities, they use literary language during their compositions, thus, making Kasena traditional prayer texts artistic compositions.

Abstract

Temporal references have been the subject of many studies around the world. Futurity is specially an elusive concept really difficult to perceive and describe. The present study tries to launch an investigation regarding the variability of future tense in Farsi. 130 sentences extracted from 8 interviews have been explored along with age, gender, presence or absence of temporal adverbial and animacy of the subject. 5 possible variabilities for expressing futurity are considered in the present study. Future time is especially difficult to perceive and in fact it might not occur. This forces us when it comes to the modality in which statements about the future may be interpreted. Not only do we just talk about those future events which are planned, but also that is the only (natural) modality that we can ascribe to those events. Following Fleischman (1982) and Comrie (1985), we suggest that the notion of future tense or futurity marking is a second class function, and the means available to futurity marking are typically borrowed from other constructions in the language However, before a further discussion of the circumstances giving rise to the idea, as well as some facts that seem to follow from this constraint on modality, we would like to give a brief sketch of some ways that futurity is expressed in different languages.
