Abstract

Indigenous languages in Nigeria have been relegated to the background at the expense of foreign languages. Official language policies have variously been enunciated in documents such as the National Policy on Education. Yet, there are problems facing indigenous language is Nigeria. This study examined prospects and problems of language policy to indigenous languages in Nigeria. Scholars and researchers were of the opinion that indigenous languages in Nigeria should incorporate socio-cultural activities. Problems facing the growth and development of indigenous languages were identified and prospects and possible solutions to the identified problems were proffered. It was therefore concluded that despite Nigeria is a multilingual society, there are few multilingual speakers of indigenous languages. It was however recommended that indigenous languages should be developed in order to enhance socio-cultural integration.

Abstract

Between objects and observers in the world of architecture have a close relationship. In assessing and appreciating an architectural work it is necessary to synchronize architectural objects as a sign. The sign in question means an architectural work that functions as a sentence that can be read and has a meaning or meaning. The position of an architectural work depends on the observer in appreciating it. In general, this paper explains that an architectural object has an understanding that can be understood by the observer in accordance with the appreciation reached to the observer. The object under study was Wisma Garuda, a budget hotel. Where the hotel applies the concept of experience in architecture, but it reads as Buddhist philosophy by the curator of the Indonesian Pavilion 2018. Even though the architect of the building does not use Buddhist philosophy, based on an analysis of the interconnectedness of Husserl's and Buddha's philosophy it proves that the meaning received by the curator is something natural.

Abstract

The use of academic vocabulary is very important to increase the writing skills and quality of the academic writing of the students. Therefore, Thesaurus software needs to be developed that contains about the academic vocabulary that help the student’s writing and increase the quality of their academic writing, and to reduce the plagiarism. The purposes of the research are; (1) to develop of German language vocabulary with a Thesaurus software that increase the quality of academic writing in German (2) to see the effectiveness of German language vocabulary with a Thesaurus software in increasing the quality of academic writing. The special purpose of the research is increasing the quality of student’s academic writing from German Language Department at the Universitas Negeri Medan with the use of Thesaurus software for German language vocabulary. The method used is the ADDIE Model with five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. The data is taken from the academic writing of the students of German Language Department and the books that used in the Wissenschaftliches Schreiben’s (Academic Writing) course and then developed into the German Language academic vocabulary Thesaurus software.

Abstract

School committees are formed as advisory bodies (Advisory Agency) and also as supporting (supporting agencies) as well as controlling (controlling agency) in the context of educational transparency, as well as mediators between the government (executive) and the community in the education unit. Based on empirical data, the school committee of Junior High School 3 Sigli has not shown an optimal contribution in the administration of education, especially in the teaching and learning process. School committees contribute more dominantly when there is education assistance provided by the government. The purpose of this research is to analyze the contribution of the school committee as an educational consideration body, as an educational support body and to analyze the contribution of the school committee as an education control body at Junior High School 3 Sigli. The approach used in this research is qualitative, while data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, focus group discussion (FGD) and documentation. The results showed that the contribution of the school committee as an educational consideration body at the Junior High School 3 Sigli had not gone perfectly, both with regard to planners, executors and managers. While the contribution of the school committee with regard to supporting bodies as government partners has also not gone well, because what is highlighted by the school committee is only when there is financial assistance. While the contribution of the school committee as a partner with the community and also a partner with the school is quite good, so is the contribution of the school committee as an education control body. The conclusion of the study shows that the contribution of Junior High School 3 Sigli committee can improve the quality of education, although it is related to the educational consideration body its contribution is not yet perfect, but with the contribution of the school committee as a support body and education control body, it has a positive impact on the smooth and comfortable teaching and learning process.

Abstract

High Order Thinking Skills is the ability to connect, manipulate, and change the knowledge and experience that is owned critically and creatively in determining decisions to solve problems in new situations. In the 21st century or the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, the learning model continues to change as a form of adjustment to the demands of the development of science and technology. The learning model that used to be still conservative in the auspices of LOTS (Low Order Thinking Skill) with the teacher / lecturer as the center of learning switched to the HOTS (High Order Thinking Skill) model by relying on reasoning, innovation and creativity to solve problems. So, the students become the center of learning. This study aims to design the shape of the HOTS learning model in the Research Methods subject. The prototype of the learning model is developed to be five steps / stages of learning, namely: (1) identifying problems based on observations of learning activities in schools, (2) selecting problems to study, (3) gathering information about the problems to be studied, (4) developing proposals, (5)presentation of proposals. The results of the study showed that the learning process of the Research Methods subject by applying the HOTS-based learning model would lead the students to form a critical attitude, increase independence and gain a lot of experience that are useful to compile scientific works including the completion of thesis preparation.

Abstract

The influence of school conduciveness on learners’ academic performance is not clearly known and documented in the world and especially in Kenya. However, the school conduciveness being a psychosocial variable significantly compliments the teaching and learning process. School conduciveness is believed to play an instrumental role on the acceptance, understanding and internalization of the learnt content by the learners. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the school conduciveness on learners’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Murang’a and Kirinyaga Counties in Kenya. The study was guided by two objectives which were to; assess how students’ attitudes towards schooling influences academic performance, and to examine how the psychosocial support systems influences academic performance in public secondary schools in Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties in Kenya. The study tested the null hypothesis Ho1: There was no significant difference between the attitudes of learners towards school psychosocial variables by gender, school category and county of origin of the institution from the two counties. The study adopted the correlational research design. The target population was 5879 consisting of all the form three students in national and extra-county public schools in Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties in Kenya. The national schools in the counties were purposively sampled, while a sample size of 7 extra-county schools was selected using the Gay’s sampling criteria of 10-30%, where the upper limit of 30% of the 22 extra-county schools was used. The Yamane’s formula was used to select a sample size of 412 students from the target population. The study selected respondents in three categories based on their academic performance forming three cadres; top cadre, middle cadre and bottom cadre. A questionnaire with 5-point Likert scale was used to collect data. Reliability of the instrument was ascertained using the Cronbach’s reliability test which yielded r=0.808 which was higher than the basic recommended threshold of 0.7 proposed by Kerlinger. The findings showed that the students in national and extra-county schools scored school conduciveness highly at x̄=71.24%. This school conduciveness correlates significantly with academic performance with Pearson’s correlation coefficient r=0.176, with a p-value=0.000 at α =.05level of significance. From the study findings, it is concluded that school conduciveness significantly influences learners’ academic performance. The study recommends that there is need to strengthen and modify school conduciveness by ensuring the psychosocial support systems are appropriately catered for during the teaching and learning processes.

Abstract

This study addresses types of illocutionary acts in Jack Ma’s inspiring speech in his graduation at the University of Hongkong. The meaning or the function of an utterance in speech-acts can merely be analyzed based on the acts of illocution made by the speaker. In other words, the hearer will be able to give any responses to the utterances made by the speaker if he or she understands the intention of speaker’s utterances. The research is categorized as descriptive qualitative based on Moleong’s theory (2014:82). It aimed to find the types of illocutionary act performed by Jack Ma’s speech in his graduation at the University of Hongkong, to describe the intended forces of each type of illocutionary act performed in that speech, and to find out the context supported interpretation of meaning in illocutionary acts. The findings indicates that there are 7 types of illocutionary acts such : 0 (0%) for declarative, 58 (62 %) for assertive, 11 (12 %) for expressive, 3 (3 %) for directive, 11 (12 %) for commissive, 4 (4 %) for assertive expressive and 7 (7 %) for assertive directive. It means that most of dominant of illocutionary acts is assertive. And context supported the interpreting of meaning performed illocutionary acts can be mentioned through the participants, the setting or social context of interaction, the topic, and the function. All these explanations guided the audience to catch the truly meaning of a speaker.

Abstract

College students are in formal operational in period of cognitive development which they can use symbols logically related to abstract concepts, acquire flexibility in thinking as well as the capacities for abstract thinking and mental hypothesis and consider possible alternatives reasoning and problem solving. However, the students’ writings have some mistakes in terms of using surface features such as spelling, grammar, usage, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and tenses. This study aimed to analyze about the students’ cognition and attitude in writing descriptive text. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative by conducting the in-depth interview and questionnaire administration. The data of this study were the sentences in descriptive text and transcript of interview. Moreover, the data source were 2 students of 7th semester at STBA – PIA Medan. The results showed that 1) the dominant type of students’ attitude in writing descriptive text was cognitive domain followed by affective and conative domains which could be interpreted that the students had positive attitude regarding to the writing of descriptive text, 2) the students’ cognition in writing descriptive text was having the stages of writing process which consists of pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing, and 3) the reasons of applying the students’ cognition and attitude in descriptive text were they had the goals and purposes in their thoughts when they were writing. Moreover, they believed that writing could improve their skills in learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Toba Batak people believe that there is a rite that will be passed by all humans, namely: Birth, Marriage and death. When the process of birth, marriage and death take place then there is a belief that every time they pass through these rites, humans must hold a tradition that aims as gratitude for the achievement and to avoid disaster. The author takes the focus in the birth rite, because in this birth rite there is a belief in the Toba Batak community of supernatural powers that can interfere at any time than mothers and newborns. The Toba Batak people believe that every new mother and baby undergo surgery, both normally and through surgery in vulnerable and weak conditions so that efforts are needed to keep mothers and newborns away from the evil spirit's power. The Toba Batak community had long ago made various efforts aimed at keeping mothers and babies away from these evil forces, namely by making strings of leaves that had magical powers placed near the mother and newborn, installing fireplaces under the mattress in order to keep the evil forces unable to approach, because according to their beliefs, the evil forces did not dare to heat. From all these efforts, it turns out that the medical benefits of all these efforts can be explained, one of which is by placing a string of cereals, cereals can ward off mosquitoes, while the embers installed under the bed to keep mothers and newborns warm at night days and can recover immediately from the former operation of the birth process. All of these efforts have the aim of avoiding accidents, and this tradition has a path from the beginning of birth until seven days after birth, when arriving on the seventh day a thanksgiving event is known as Esek-esek. The author sees that there are many advantages to this tradition. Aside from keeping mothers and babies away from magical power, it can also be a place for community to gather, so that they can become a place of friendship between the far and near.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in academic procrastination between active and non-active students in student organizations in the Faculty of Psychology, University of Medan Area. The scale of academic procrastination in this study is based on the characteristics of academic procrastination according to Ferrari, Johnson, and McCown. The results shows that There is no difference in academic procrastination between students who are active and not active in participating the organizational activities by looking at the value or coefficient of difference in anava F = 0.200 with P> 0.05. There is significant differences in academic procrastination between male and female students. These results are known by looking at the value or coefficient of difference in anava F = 14.137 with P <0.010. Calculation results from the comparison of empirical mean and hypothetical mean of academic procrastination (112.5 <149.2368), where the empirical mean of academic procrastination is greater than the hypothetical mean, it can be stated that the academic procrastination of students is high.
