Abstract

This study explores Ruang Guru Clash of Champion (COC) as an edutainment phenomenon in the digital education landscape. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research analyzes how COC integrates education and entertainment through the concept of edutainment. Data were collected from 15 videos published on Ruang Guru's official YouTube channel and analyzed using Saussure's theory of signification, which includes elements of the signifier and the signified. The findings indicate that COC comply to edutainment principles by presenting engaging, interactive, and competitive learning experiences. The competition is constructed as a prestigious academic event through visual elements such as a coliseum-shaped stage, medals and trophies as symbols of achievement, and alma mater jackets representing institutional identity and pride. Additionally, the role of tutors, both in digital form (Aurora) and as global mentor figures (Heo Seong Beom), streghten the image of innovative modern education. The study concludes that COC not only delivers education in an entertaining format but also shapes a new perception of academic competition as a dynamic, prestigious, and technology-driven experience. Thus, COC exemplifies how the education industry can adapt edutainment strategies to attract the digital generation.

Abstract

This study analyzes communication patterns within the Hypehope Bali community, a dance organization that emphasizes coordination between leaders, mentors, and students. The research aims to identify and understand the application of wheel communication patterns, formal and informal interactions, and socialization mechanisms that support the community's operational efficiency. Using field observation and in-depth interviews, the study reveals that the wheel communication pattern is implemented with the leader as the central decision-maker, who conveys information to mentors and subsequently to students. Formal communication is applied in contexts requiring clarity, such as meetings and technical instructions, while informal communication dominates daily interactions to foster familiarity and strengthen relationships among members. Additionally, socialization mechanisms introduce the community’s values and culture to new members through internal media such as WhatsApp groups and meetings, as well as external social media platforms. The findings indicate that Hypehope Bali’s success in creating a harmonious and productive environment heavily relies on the integration of various communication patterns. This study recommends continuous monitoring of communication processes to address the challenges of new member adaptation and enhance coordination efficiency within the community.

Abstract

For a lot of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners, writing is perceived to be the most challenging skill despite the fast development of technology in learning. This study was aimed at revealing types of grammatical errors made by lower- and higher-achieving learners in their writing. This qualitative study analyzed the essay writing of 19 lower-achieving learners and 42 higher-achieving learners from a private university. The writing was assigned in the classroom withough any help of digital tools. The findings revealed that both levels of learners made morphological, syntactic, lexical, and functional errors. No group of learner demonstrated a tendency of producing a certain type of errors, meaning that both lower- and higher-achieving learners made similar errros. The errors were probably caused by the interference of learners’ first langugae (Indonesian), lack of knowledge and practice, and the complex English writing system. The findings of this study imply the need to employ strategies in giving feedback to learners’ writing and to enhance learners’ awareness about morphological, syntactic, lexical, and functional aspects in their writing.

Abstract

This study evaluated whether assigning student-created video blogs (vlogs) could improve English language proficiency and engagement in an Information Systems ESP course. Thirty undergraduate Information Systems students completed a series of individual and group vlog projects on technical topics (e.g. “Introduction to Information Systems”). Data were collected via standardized pre- and post-speaking tests, semi-structured interviews, and a student survey at the end of the semester. Speaking test scores improved substantially (mean gain ≈ 47.5%), with notable advances in fluency, pronunciation, and use of domain-specific vocabulary. Qualitative feedback indicated high student interest and satisfaction: most students reported increased confidence in speaking and active engagement with course content. These results suggest that integrating vlog assignments in a technical ESP context can strengthen both general English skills and subject-matter communication. Practical implications and limitations are discussed, and directions for future research are proposed.

Abstract

The Provincial Government of Lampung faces significant challenges in increasing its Regional Own-Source Revenue, one of which is through the Motor Vehicle Tax sector. Despite the continuous growth in the number of vehicles, taxpayer compliance remains very low, ranging only between 30–38%. This situation directly affects the region's fiscal capacity to fund development and public services. This policy paper examines the underlying causes of low PKB revenue and formulates data-driven policy recommendations based on field surveys and public policy theories. The data analysis employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Survey results reveal that 86 percent of taxpayers encounter obstacles when paying taxes, such as long queues at Samsat offices or disruptions in the online payment system. Additionally, 44 percent of taxpayers perceive the tax payment procedures to be overly complicated. The analysis indicates that the core issue is the low compliance rate among motor vehicle taxpayers, primarily due to limited access to payment services caused by uneven digital infrastructure and restricted service hours. These factors have significantly contributed to the low PKB revenue in Lampung Province. This policy paper adopts the New Public Management (NPM) approach and the principles of Good Governance by promoting the integrated digitalization of PKB payment services through mobile and web-based applications. Furthermore, extending service hours into the evenings and weekends is recommended to provide greater time flexibility for the public. As a concrete step, it is recommended that the Provincial Government of Lampung issue a new Governor Regulation outlining the technical aspects of PKB services, including coordination among the Regional Revenue Agency, Samsat, the police department, and financial institutions. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance tax compliance, strengthen PAD, and support more autonomous and sustainable regional development.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of students' writing skills in review texts, which is caused by the limited learning strategies that can facilitate critical and systematic thinking processes. The objective of this study  is to determine the improvement of students' review writing skills through mind-mapping techniques assisted by Xmind. This study uses the type of Classroom Action Research, which is carried out through actions consisting of 2 cycles, where each cycle has four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Research data were obtained using data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, assessments, and documentation. The study showed that students' review writing skills with mind-mapping techniques assisted by Xmind had increased significantly. The average score of students' review writing skills increased in each cycle, with an average score of 70.45 for cycle I and 86.81 for cycle II. The cycle I review writing test results showed that 29 students (76.32%) achieved completeness and increased. Thus, the mind mapping technique assisted by Xmind is effectively used as a learning strategy to improve students' review writing skills. Integration of this technique into the writing learning curriculum in higher education is recommended, especially to solve the classic challenges in teaching writing.

Abstract

Geography learning requires appropriate media to concretize abstract concepts, such as the distribution of flora and fauna in Indonesia, which varies significantly across the archipelago. Conventional maps commonly used in schools often lack the flexibility and interactivity needed to present geospatial information effectively and dynamically. Therefore, this study aims to develop an interactive map-based learning media to enhance students’ understanding of the distribution of Indonesian flora and fauna in Senior High School geography subjects. The study applies a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The interactive map was designed using base maps derived from thematic data, combined with digital or satellite imagery, to produce a more comprehensive and engaging geospatial visualization. Features of the media include layers of flora and fauna distribution, geographic characteristics, interactive videos, quizzes, learning materials, and lesson plans. The media is also supported by clear icons, appropriate cartographic symbols, and color gradations based on cartographic principles to improve readability and spatial interpretation. The developed media was tested on students at SMAN 1 Penebel, Tabanan Regency, Bali. Validation results from content, language, and media experts indicated a very high level of validity. In addition, practicality assessments by teachers and students showed that the media is easy to use and effective in classroom settings. Pre-test and post-test comparisons revealed a significant improvement in student learning outcomes, with an average post-test score increase of 28.75 points. These results suggest that interactive map media can significantly enhance the effectiveness of geography learning.

Abstract

The term “men written by women” which is a new terminology on the social media platforms namely Tiktok, has sparked conversations revolving on what masculinity is. Peeta Mellark from Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy becomes the embodiment of the "men written by women" trope on social media. “Men written by women” can be considered as a product of the “female gaze”, in opposite of the “male gaze”. The female gaze allows and empowers women writers to challenge and subvert the imposed limitations by the traditional “male gaze” thus resulting in the creation of male characters who defy expectations of the traditional “masculine hero” archetype. This research will examine Peeta Mellark from Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy through a feminist lens, utilizing Connell’s Critical Masculinity Studies, specifically the concept of non-hegemonic masculinity as the primary framework. In addition, this research will examine how Peeta's traits and behaviors which symbolizes the departure from hegemonic masculinity along with the global success of The Hunger games franchise has contributed to the widespread of the “men written by women” trope. The worldwide trend of “men written by women” has enabled women’s agency to redefine on what masculinity is.

Abstract

This research examines the portrayal of masculinity in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022), emphasizing on how Jeffrey Dahmer performs hegemonic masculine traits despite his marginalized sexual identity. Using a qualitative textual analysis method, this research applies R.W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity to analyze key scenes depicting Dahmer’s criminal acts. This study found that Dahmer consistently embodies hegemonic masculine traits, such as domination, control, and power, as well as the objectification of the others. His murdering acts are not isolated events, but rather ritualized performances that reaffirm masculine dominance through repeated acts of violence. Despite his queerness puts him outside the heteronormative masculinity, it does not subvert the patriarchal structure, in fact, it coexists with it through his acts. This study highlights the adaptability of hegemonic masculinity across different heteronormative sexual identities and challenges the assumption that queerness inherently resists dominant gender norms. The implications extend to the fields of gender studies, media studies, true crime narratives, and criminology studies, urging scholars and audiences to reconsider the intersection of queerness, race, and masculinity in representation of crime narrative. Future research is encouraged to explore further on the audiences’ reception toward perpetrators across diverse identity and cultural context.
The Symbiotic Sisterhood: Analyzing Rituals of Shared Grief in “Midsommar” Ramadhania, Mutiara

Abstract

This research explored the portrayal of shared grief and communal healing in Ari Aster’s film “Midsommar”, focusing on the “Harga” community’s rituals through the lenses of Emile Durkheim’s functionalism and Ferdinand de Saussure’s visual-semiotic theory. The research investigates how these rituals foster a “symbiotic sisterhood” and facilitate the protagonist Dani’s transformation from isolation to belonging. Using qualitative visual-semiotic analysis, the study decodes the film’s symbolic imagery, communal ceremonies, and structured cultural practices. The findings reveal that the Harga's ritualistic expressions of grief—such as the Attestupa and communal crying—serve not only as mechanisms for emotional release but also reinforce social cohesion, mirroring Durkheim’s theory of collective effervescence and organic solidarity. Dani’s participation in these rites catalyzes her psychological recovery from trauma, positioning the Harga women as a therapeutic support system. The study concludes that “Midsommar” subverts traditional Western notions of solitary mourning by presenting grief as a collective, functional force that forges identity, solidarity, and empowerment within a closed communal structure. This analysis contributes to broader discussions on how horror films visualize trauma, ritual, and gendered communal bonds in popular culture.
