Abstract

Operating room nurses (ORNs) can be negatively affected when they experience unpleasant personalities and attitudes from ophthalmic surgeons, which can adversely impact their work performance, cognitive skills, and psychological health. This study aims to assess anxiety and stress levels and identify factors associated with negative emotions among OR nurses, especially during intraoperative adverse events in cataract surgery. A self-administered questionnaire was designed and distributed among 36 operating room nurses at a tertiary eye hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from August to October 2023. The questionnaire aimed to assess anxiety levels and explore the reasons for stress and anxiety associated with either complicated or uncomplicated phacoemulsification cases. Our research identified that two-thirds (66.7%) of participants experienced anxiety during cataract surgery. Moreover, the results showed that anxious feelings during uncomplicated cataract surgery were reported by 26 (72.2%) nurses when working with a consultant with an unpleasant personality and 14 (38.9%) nurses when the patient was uncooperative. Two-thirds of the respondents (66.7%) were anxious when they experienced a negative attitude from the consultant, and more than half of the nurses (63.9%) were nervous due to the unavailability of sterile instruments during complicated cataract surgery. Furthermore, (41.7%) of nurses reported losing concentration when a surgeon displayed a negative attitude. Unfavorable attitudes and behaviors by ophthalmic consultants and surgeons may be the most prevalent factors in encountering anxiety and discomfort among OR nurses.

Abstract

Delays in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of TB are an obstacle in the control of the disease and may be responsible for a longer period of infectivity at the population level. The objective of this study is to estimate the risk factors that contribute to the delays in TB detection attributed to both the patient and the health care system. The focus group method was applicable in the present study. Study subjects (patients and health care professionals) were divided into two basic groups. A total of 9 patients aged 18 to 76 and 4 health workers (epidemiologist, family physician / general practitioner, microbiology specialist and pulmonology specialist) participated in the focus groups. In more than half of the patients, a delay in diagnosis was observed. The patient delay time frame varied between 2 and 4 months. The reasons for the delayed reporting of TB symptoms to the doctor are the attribution of health problems to temporary medical conditions and, as stated by the respondents, their own stubbornness. Healthcare workers believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the recognition of tuberculosis to a certain extent, as all activities were primarily aimed at determining the COVID-19 status of patients with any type of respiratory symptoms. Raising awareness about the risk factors of delay in the detection of tuberculosis among risk groups, the general population and health care professionals will help prevent delays in treatment and further reduce the incidence of TB in the general population.

Abstract

Managing a child with sickle cell disease (SCD) can be challenging for the family. This study investigates the quality of family life in families of children with SCD in Oman, a relatively recent and diverse topic, particularly in the Middle Eastern context. Through a cross-sectional design, 103 Omani mothers of children with SCD were surveyed to explore their perceptions of FQOL and identify factors influencing it using the Beach Center FQOL scale. The research study found that mothers generally perceived FQOL as high, with the highest satisfaction in physical/material well-being and the least in emotional well-being. This research study identified significant differences in FQOL among different family structures, with nuclear families reporting higher FQOL than families of single-parent or polygamous structures. Content analysis of open-ended responses provided suggestions for improving healthcare services, providing financial aid, and advocating for special considerations. The findings highlight the necessity of interventions targeted at providing support and assistance to families with SCD, especially those in polygamous structures. Additionally, the study underscores the need for further research in this area, considering the current study's limitations, and highlights the importance of designing FQOL assessment tools for healthcare institutions for families of children with SCD and other chronic conditions.

Abstract

Thalassemia, a prevalent genetic disorder in Bangladesh, poses a heavy burden on families and the healthcare system. This thesis examines the perceptions and attitudes of mothers towards thalassemia in children, aiming to understand their knowledge of the disease, coping mechanisms, and interactions with healthcare providers. The study aimed to evaluate the maternal understanding and attitudes concerning thalassemia in children in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 112 mothers from the pediatric ward and outpatient department at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, Barisal. A convenience sampling method was employed to select participants. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire divided into three sections and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage) and inferential statistics (t-test, ANOVA, Correlation) were applied for analysis. The average age of participants was 27 years (SD=5.822). The total mean perception (30.33±10.647) and attitude (18.80±5.451) levels were moderate and high among this study’s respondents, respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between participants' age and their perception of thalassemia (r= -0.203, p=0.032). Statistically significant relationships were also found between participants' religion and perception (F=10.106, p=0.000), occupation level and perception (F=4.224, p=0.007), and residential area and perception (t=-2.442, p=0.016). The findings revealed a strong association between sociodemographic factors and mothers' perceptions and attitudes about thalassemia. Raising awareness through educational campaigns and prevention programs could help control thalassemia. Educated mothers are better equipped to provide care, improving health outcomes for children with thalassemia.

Abstract

Chronic hyperglycemia in patients with Diabetes Mellitus can cause autonomic neuropathy, resulting in decreased skin moisture in the feet. This study aims to test the impact of foot exercises with a serrated rubber ball and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) on skin moisture in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. This study was a pre-experimental design with a sample of 19 respondents of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, who were taken randomly. Skin moisture data for the feet were measured using a digital skin tester one day before and after treatment. Foot exercises with a serrated rubber ball and VCO were carried out every two days for 30 minutes within 3 weeks. The average skin moisture of the feet before treatment was 17.80% ± 3.62%, and after treatment, 26.46 ± 6.34%%. The results of the Paired Sample T-Test showed a significant effect of the combination of foot exercises with a serrated rubber ball and VCO on increasing the skin moisture of the feet of patients with Diabetes Mellitus (p-value = 0.00). Thus, applying foot exercises with a serrated rubber ball and VCO effectively increases the skin moisture of the feet of patients with Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Telehealthcare use among mental health professionals will enhance professional healthcare services, but this development is slow and fraught with challenges in Nigeria's mental health services. This study explores the mental health professionals (MHP) perceived usefulness of Telehealthcare initiatives at Neuropsychiatric hospitals (NH) in Southwest Nigeria. The study followed a descriptive phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face and telephonically with seven mental health professionals, including nurses, psychiatrists, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists, who were purposely sampled from the NH in Southwest, guided by data saturation. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and inductively analyzed using descriptive phenomenological analysis with the aid of the ATLASti Version 9 program. The study was analyzed thematically. Two themes emerged: (1) Improved healthcare access and (2) Reduced stigmatization. The results of this study indicated that mental health professionals perceived that telehealthcare makes work faster and patients can access care easily; also, stigmatization of mental health patients is reduced as they are not seen physically attending Neuropsychiatric hospitals. Therefore, further studies are needed on the effectiveness of telehealthcare utilization among mental health patients. It is therefore recommended that there should be an increase in the provision of telehealthcare infrastructure and an increase in manpower to meet the needs of mental health seekers.

Abstract

Adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus fail to achieve glycemic control typically because of poor performance in administering insulin injections, monitoring blood glucose, adhering to meal plans, and engaging in appropriate exercises. Little is known about the lived experiences and coping strategies of adolescents living with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The study aimed to explore the lived experiences and coping strategies of adolescents living with type 1 diabetes mellitus in the Hhohho region of Eswatini. A qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological design was used. Data were collected through in-depth individual telephone interviews using a semi-structured interview guide from a purposively selected sample. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by Braun and Clarke’s approach. Findings revealed that participants experienced mental health challenges, alterations in their social life, especially relationships with peers, and restrictions in terms of diets, glycemic control, and physical limitations. Coping mechanisms reported by participants included adherence to prescribed diets, use of technology in assistive devices, and engagement in physical activity. Adolescents living with type 1 diabetes mellitus need close monitoring by both healthcare professionals and their caregivers to achieve reasonable glycemic control. Additionally, focused psychosocial interventions are needed to enhance resilience among adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and help them cope with the demands of and stress associated with having the disease. Future research should investigate factors associated with the negative experiences of adolescents living with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has become a significant global health problem, characterized by the gradual and progressive damage to nephrons and decreased glomerular filtration rate which causes toxins in the body to accumulate and cause fatigue. One of the main problems experienced by hemodialysis patients is how to manage interdialytic weight gain (IDWG). Continuous excess extracellular fluid can cause adverse effects on the heart and respiratory function, which serves as the physiological basis for fatigue. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between IDWG and fatigue in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample used was 139 respondents using total sampling technique. Data collection of IDWG was conducted by a One Health digital weighing scale and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) Fatigue Scale version 4 questionnaire. Data mean value IDWG 3.48% with a standard deviation of 1.72 and a median fatigue score of 26.0 with a low score of 12 and a high score of 46. Data were analyzed by using Spearman's rho correlation test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed a weak negative relationship between IDWG and fatigue (p value <0.001 ; r = -0.385). It means that the higher the IDWG value, the lower the fatigue score, indicating that the fatigue level is more severe. This study highlights the importance of controlling IDWG to reduce fatigue levels in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis

Abstract

The healthcare sector operates under relentless demands, requiring uninterrupted service delivery amid high-stress environments. Compassion fatigue manifests as a complex interplay of burnout and secondary traumatic stress. To mitigate the psychological toll of compassion fatigue, healthcare professionals often adopt defense mechanisms. This study examines the defense styles used by healthcare professionals experiencing compassion fatigue. This study is a descriptive quantitative study. The study sample consisted of 499 actively working healthcare professionals (422 nurses, 77 doctors). A Personal Information Form consisting of 12 questions, the Compassion Scale (CQ), and the Defense Style Questionnaire-40 (DSQ-40) were used to collect data. The study was conducted using the survey method (Online link) and the snowball sampling method. According to the study results, the level of compassion increases as the number of children in the participants increases. The level of compassion decreases as the level of education increases. In addition, it was determined that participants with low levels of compassion resort to immature defense styles and may experience compassion fatigue. In order to prevent compassion fatigue in healthcare professionals who play very important roles in protecting, developing, and improving community mental health, The management should support and support healthcare professionals in problems experienced in clinical environments, improve difficult working conditions, and take measures to prevent violence in healthcare.

Abstract

Nurses mostly experience relatively high workloads. Excessive workloads on nurses can cause physical fatigue and affect the mental health of a nurse, thus impacting work activities for a nurse. This study aimed to determine the relationship between workload and the mental health of nurses at the Denpasar City Health Center. This type of research is correlative analytic with a cross-sectional research design. The sampling technique used in this study used the probability sampling technique with the total sampling method. The sample used was 60 respondents from the total population of all nurses at the North and East Denpasar Health Center. The research instrument used in this study for the workload variable was the NASA-TLX (National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index) instrument. In contrast, the mental health variable used the Self Rating Questionnaire (SRQ) 20 instrument. The results of this study showed that most nurses (55%) experienced heavy workloads. In comparison, the results of the mental health measurements of most nurses (80%) fell into the category of emotional mental disorders. The Spearman Rank test results obtained a p-value of 0.002 <0.05, which means that there is a relationship between the workload variable and the mental health of nurses, and a correlation coefficient value of 0.385 was obtained, which means that the correlation strength is sufficient. Excessive workload on nurses can later cause stress and burnout, ultimately affecting the nurse's mental health. Therefore, it is hoped that nurses can evaluate themselves in reducing their workload so that they can later improve their mental health to remain optimal.
