Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the relationship between structured talent development, ethical leadership decision-making, and organizational resilience in Regional-Owned Enterprises (ROEs) in East Java, Indonesia. It specifically investigates whether ethical leadership mediates the relationship between talent development and organizational resilience in responding to business disruption. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a quantitative research design. Data were collected through structured surveys from 250 mid-to-senior-level managers working across various ROEs in East Java. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the hypothesized relationships among talent development, ethical leadership, and organizational resilience. Findings – The results indicate that comprehensive talent development significantly enhances ethical leadership decision-making (? = 0.67, p < 0.001). Furthermore, talent development and ethical leadership have significant positive effects on organizational resilience, with coefficients of ? = 0.52 and ? = 0.48, respectively (p < 0.001). Ethical leadership also significantly mediates the relationship between talent development and organizational resilience. These findings demonstrate that systematic talent development contributes to organizational resilience both directly and indirectly by strengthening ethical leadership capabilities. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to mid-to-senior-level managers in Regional-Owned Enterprises in East Java, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other regions, organizational levels, or sectors. The quantitative and cross-sectional design also limits the ability to capture changes in organizational resilience over time. Future research could employ longitudinal approaches and examine additional factors such as organizational culture, digital capability, innovation capability, or strategic agility. Originality/value – This study contributes to human resource development and leadership literature by integrating talent development, ethical leadership, and organizational resilience within a single explanatory framework. Its originality lies in demonstrating the mediating role of ethical leadership in translating talent development into greater organizational resilience. The study also provides empirical evidence from Regional-Owned Enterprises in East Java, representing an underexplored developing-economy context.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the application of blockchain technology in the accounting systems of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in East Java, Indonesia, and to examine its impact on financial transparency and financial performance. It also examines the mediating role of financial transparency in the relationship between blockchain technology adoption and financial performance. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a quantitative research design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 150 BUMDes managers and financial officers across selected regencies in East Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to examine the direct effects of blockchain technology adoption on financial transparency and financial performance and the mediating effect of financial transparency. Findings – The results show that blockchain technology adoption has a significant positive effect on financial transparency (? = 0.67, p < 0.001) and financial performance (? = 0.52, p < 0.001). Furthermore, financial transparency partially mediates the relationship between blockchain adoption and financial performance. These findings indicate that blockchain adoption can improve financial outcomes not only through direct operational benefits but also by strengthening transparency and accountability in BUMDes accounting systems. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to selected BUMDes in East Java, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings to other regions or types of village enterprises. The cross-sectional design also limits the ability to assess the long-term effects of blockchain adoption. Future research could employ longitudinal approaches and investigate additional factors such as digital literacy, organizational readiness, cybersecurity, regulatory support, and implementation costs. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature on digital innovation and public sector accounting by integrating blockchain adoption, financial transparency, and financial performance within a single empirical framework. Its originality lies in positioning financial transparency as a mediating mechanism through which blockchain technology contributes to improved financial performance.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the role of good corporate governance in preventing financial distress through a literature review. Design/methodology/approach – The research method uses a qualitative approach with library research. Data were obtained from scientific journals, books, regulations, and reports from international organizations discussing corporate governance and financial distress. Findings – The results of the study show that the implementation of the principles of transparency, accountability, responsibility, independence, and fairness can improve the effectiveness of supervision, strengthen internal control systems, reduce agency conflicts, improve the quality of decision-making, and improve corporate risk management. Governance mechanisms such as an independent board of commissioners, audit committee, institutional ownership, and internal control systems play an important role in reducing the probability of financial distress. Research limitations/implications – Although many studies have found a negative relationship between GCG and financial distress, empirical results have not been entirely consistent due to differences in industry sectors, company characteristics, and the governance indicators used. Originality/value – These findings reinforce the view that Good Corporate Governance is an important preventive strategy to maintain corporate sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the determinants of business sustainability for East Javanese culinary Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), focusing on the roles of product innovation and digital marketplace adoption. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 250 owner-managers of East Javanese culinary MSMEs. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings – The results indicate that both product innovation (? = 0.385, p < 0.001) and digital marketplace utilization (? = 0.421, p < 0.001) have significant positive effects on business sustainability. Furthermore, competitive advantage was found to partially mediate the relationship between these independent variables and sustainability. The model explains 58.7% of the variance in business sustainability. Research limitations/implications – Limitations include a cross-sectional design, self-reported data, and a focus on a specific regional context (East Java) which may limit generalizability. The study provides practical insights for entrepreneurs and policymakers aiming to enhance the resilience and long-term viability of regional culinary heritage businesses in the digital era. Originality/value – These findings underscore the critical importance of continuous innovation and digital transformation for culinary MSMEs to thrive in a competitive market. It fills a research gap by providing an integrated empirical model that simultaneously tests the influence of product innovation and digital marketplace utilization on the sustainability of culturally specific culinary businesses.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the determinants of digital entrepreneurship success and the adoption of innovative business models among technology startups in East Java, Indonesia. Specifically, it examines the effects of entrepreneurial insight, market orientation, digital infrastructure adoption, and digital platform utilization on startup survival and performance, while assessing the moderating roles of business incubation support and the collaborative Penta Helix entrepreneurial ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to 250 founders and key decision-makers of registered technology startups in East Java. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the hypothesized direct relationships and the moderating effects of business incubation support and the Penta Helix entrepreneurial ecosystem. Findings – The findings indicate that entrepreneurial insight, market orientation, digital infrastructure adoption, including QRIS and digital banking, and effective utilization of digital platforms such as marketplaces have significant positive effects on startup survival and performance. Furthermore, business incubation support and a collaborative Penta Helix entrepreneurial ecosystem positively moderate these relationships, indicating that supportive institutional and collaborative environments strengthen the ability of startups to transform entrepreneurial capabilities and digital resources into sustainable business outcomes. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to technology startups in East Java and uses cross-sectional data, which may limit the generalizability of the findings and the ability to capture changes in startup performance over time. Future research could employ longitudinal approaches and examine additional factors such as digital skills, access to venture capital, technological innovation, entrepreneurial resilience, and regulatory support. Originality/value – This study contributes to the digital entrepreneurship literature by developing and empirically validating an integrated model of startup success that combines entrepreneurial capabilities, market orientation, digital infrastructure, platform utilization, and ecosystem support. Its originality lies in examining these relationships within the emerging technology startup ecosystem of East Java and incorporating business incubation and the Penta Helix model as contextual moderators.
