Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal: Journal of Suboptimal Lands (JLSO) (p-ISSN 2252-6188; e-ISSN 2302-3015) publishes original research papers, literature reviews, and short communications that cover on topics relevant to suboptimal lands: freshwater swamps, tidal lowlands, peatlands, dry and dry acid lands, shaded ecosystem, ex-mined lands, saline and marine coastal wetland ecosystems. The Journal serves as a multi-disciplinary forum covering key issues in Suboptimal Lands science and technology, management, policy and ecological economics. The journal is published by Pusat Unggulan Riset Pengembangan Lahan Suboptimal (PUR-PLSO), Universitas Sriwijaya. The journal was first published on April of 2012 with twice per year in frequency on April and October.

Abstract

In West Lombok, gold amalgamation tailings are commonly discharged to agricultural lands resulting in reduced maize yield in the area. Phytoremediation can represent a low-cost alternative to traditional techniques such as soil removal. This study was aimed to elucidate the potential of Lindernia crustacea (L.) F., Paspalum conjugatum L., and Cyperus kyllingia Endl., for phytoremediation of mercury-contaminated soils in conjunction with the ammonium thiosulphate to phytoextract mercury and its effect on maize growth. Each of the plant seedlings was planted in a plastic pot containing 15 kg of mercury-contaminated soil for 9 weeks. Treatments tested were three plant species), and two rates of ammonium thiosulphate application, i.e. 0 and 8 g / kg of soil. Ammonium thiosulphate was applied one week before harvesting the plants. At harvest (9 weeks) shoots and roots were analyzed for mercury concentration. The remaining soils in the pots were used to grow maize for 8 weeks. The results showed that on average, the addition of ammonium thiosulphate increased the accumulation of mercury in plant shoots and roots by 82% and 47%, respectively, compared to the media without addition of ammonium thiosulphate. In comparison to the control treatment, the average increase of dry weight of maize (shoot+root) grown on media previously remediated with three plant species with addition of ammonium thiosulphate was 40%, while that grown on media previously remediated with three plant species without addition of ammonium thiosulphate was 62%.

Abstract

The research objective was to develop the design of paddy field plot in ridge lowland swamp for rice-fish cultivation. The method used in this study was descriptive in form of data collecting through direct field observation and from related institutions. The water balance and water pond dimension were mathematically calculated and the results would be compared to water balance from field observation. The observed parameters were effective rainfall, height of water table, crop water requirement, infiltration, percolation, evaporation, water pond dimension and paddy field plot size. The results showed that maximum storage volume of pond that was required to fulfill irrigation water requirement for rice plants as well as for fish cultivation was 44.2 m³/month. Dimension of designed pond had length of 18.48 m, width of 2.4 m and depth of 1 m.

Abstract

Nuryenti, et al. Content of Hara N, P, K on Gawangan and Harvest Road Oil Palm Plantation. JLSO 5(2):219-224. Differences in the location of oil palm plantations cause differences in nutrient content contained in the soil. This study aims to analyze the nutrient content of N, P, K of soil on gawangan and harvest road in PT. Sawit Mas Sejahtera. The method used is a detailed survey method with an observed area of 3 ha. Soil analysis results in nutrient content of N, P, K on harvest road showed higher yield compared to gawangan. N-total value on gawangan 0.11% and 0.16%  harvest road, P-bray value on gawangan 6.15 ppm and 15 ppm harvest road, K-dd value on gawangan 0.10 me/100 g and 0.41 me/100 g harvest road. Soil pH on harvest road and gawangan is a very low pH soil ranging from 3.84 to 4.22. Palm oil production may increase by adding calcification first before the application of N, P, K fertilizer especially on harvest road to improve soil fertility and produce optimal production.

Abstract

Aksani, et al. Soil Bacteria Population in Paddy Tidal Land by Application of Liquid Fertilizer Neptunia prostrata. JLSO 5(2):170-177. High soil acidity in tidal lowland influences soil bacteria population. This research aimed to determine soil bacteria population with liquid fertilizer application made by Neptunia prostrata for paddy grown in tidal lowland. This research using factorial completely randomized design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was liquid fertilizer rate, consisting of three levels: 96 mL pot-1(P1), 120 mL pot-1(P2) and 144mL pot-1(P3). The second factor was application period consisting of three times: once time at the planting time (W1), two times at the planting time and harvesting time and three times at the planting time, primordial stage and harvesting time. The result showed that the highest soil bacteria population was 10,94 log spk g-1with the treatment of  144 mL pot-1 liquid fertilizer and given once time at the planting time (P1).

Puspitahati et al, 2017. Analysis of Water Balance in Water Supply Against Climate Change in some Sub-Watersheds Musi. JLSO 6(2):192-202. Rainfall and land cover in the Musi Sub-watershed affect water availability. Both of these components are inputs from the water balance which will affect fluctuations and water level so that it will affect evapotranspiration, run off, and flowrate. The purpose of the study was to determine how the effects of climate change on water availability in the Sub-watershed of Musi Watershed. This study was focus on four Sub-watersheds contained on the Musi river basin, namely Musi Sub-watershed, Komering Sub-watershed, Ogan Sub-watershed and Lematang Sub-watershed. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Soil and Water Engineering, Department of Agriculture Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from September 2013 to January 2014. Methods used in this research were descriptive method, the study of literature and secondary data taking, while the analysis was done with tabulation and graphs. The conclusion were 1) The availability of water was affected by changes in rainfall, population growth, and land cover types, 2) The highest rainfall was in Komering Sub-watershed equal to 105.23 mm/month, the highest run off was in Komering Sub-watershed equal to 33.67 mm/month, while the highest of evapotranspiration was in  Lematang Sub-watershed equal to 121.69 mm/month. Thus, we can find out how the effects of climate change on water availability in sub-watersheds in the Musi River Basin.

Abstract

Kartikawati et al, 2017. Utilization of Rainfed Rice Areas for High Yielding Rice Cultivation on Climate Change. JLSO 6(2):142-149.Many efforts have been conducted by Indonesian government for national food supply and food security through rice cultivation on sub optimal lands in accelerating food sustainability particularly rice, maize and soybean. The rainfed area is an important sub optimal land which should be developed due to 26,5% of Indonesia rice production produced from cultivation system in those area. However, the cultivation in rainfed areas have challenges such as changing of rainfall pattern due to climate change. Therefore, to obtain the information of productivity from high yield rice varieties and methane emission in rainfed area, a study has been conducted by applying innovation of environmental friendly technology such as fertilizer use based on integrated cropping calendar. The study was carried out at Research Station of Indonesian Agriculture Environment Research Institute in Jakenan, which is one of rainfed area in Pati District, Central Java Province. The study was conducted on first growing season (GS 1) or rainy season by applying direct seeded system using rice seeder. Four rice varieties were used for this study, namely Ciherang, Dendang, Inpari 31 and Inpari 24. The study showed that productivity of four rice varieties were 5.92; 7.10; 5.06 and 7.41 t/ha, respectively. Methane emission was significant different among the varieties as 232; 319; 300 and 405 kg/ha/season, respectively.

Mustikarini et al, 2016. Daya Adaptasi Mutan Padi Beras Merah dan Varietas padi Gogo di Tiga Lahan Sub Optimal di Indonesia. JLSO 5(1):18-26.Yield trials mutant gamma irradiation results important to know the genetic stability with regard to the potential yield. Mutants adaptability in many locations and seasons that can be known whether the mutant proper grown in mosttype soil in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the ability of the mutant rice brown rice adapasi iiradiasi results of gamma rays and power yield. The research was conducted in January-December 2015. Yield trials conducted in ultisol soil, Village Balunijuk, Merawang, Bangka. Multilocation test on three location in Indonesian is Jombang, southwest Bangka, Bangka, Lampung, Batu and pontianak. The results conducted on the land southwest Ultisol, Village Balunijuk, Merawang, Bangka.In the dry season from April to October 2015. The results yield trials conducted on 6 mutant to-7 (M7) and four varieties showed MR1527 has the highest yield and is not significantly different from the varieties echo lake and Inpago 4. The test results multilocation showed that the mutants were able to adaptation in West Bangka regency ultisol land, land ultisol in Pontianak, and land grumusol in Jombang, East Java, in the dry season.

Wildayana et al, 2016. Matching Global Crises with Application of Production Factors and Income of NES Oil Palm Plasma Farmers. JLSO 5(1):10-17.The research aimed to analyze the global crisis adjustment to the production factors and income of NES oil palm smallholder. The research location is located in swamp land Talang Sepucuk, OKI District (PIR Trans) and PIR Bun is sited in Betung Banyuasin, South Sumatra. The research method was a field survey using a questionnaire to smallholders. Collected data are statistically processed with SPSS version 21. The research concludes that the global crisis has led to a very significant reduction in the use of fertilizers and pesticides and the significant differences in the utilization of manpower. The use alsintan showed no significant difference. Very sharp reduction has occurred in PIR Bun compared to PIR Trans smallholder farmers. As a result of the global crisis, the PIR Trans smallholder incomes decreased by 25.76% and PIR Bun decreased by 36.95% and vary significantly due to the global crisis. But the distribution of smallholder incomes do not show the proportion of the difference.

Gribaldi et al, 2016. Tolerance Improvement of Two Rice Varieties to Submerged Stress Through Fertilization Treatment in Swamp. JLSO 5(1):1-9.Rice plants tolerance to the submerged conditions need to be improved in order to minimize the crop damage during the immersion. To increase the tolerance of rice plants effort is required to produce a good plant growth and early high vigor before the immersion, one through fertilization treatment. This study aims to obtain proper fertilization technology that can increase stress tolerance of rice plants submerged in swampy embankment conditions. The experimental design used in this study is the split plot design with three replications. The main plot is the fertilization treatment (P) consists of;  P0 = full doses of N fertilization without submerged, P1 =  full doses of N fertilization with submerged, P2 = ½ doses of N fertilizer with submerged.  The subplots are varieties of rice (V) consist of; V1 = Variety of Inpara 5, V2 = Variety of IR 64. The results of the study showed that fertilization treatment affect on rice plants tolerance to stress submerged, ½ doses of N fertilizing may increase the tolerance of crops to submersion stress, Variety of Inpara 5 tends to be more tolerant to submersion stress than the varieties of IR 64 at various fertilization treatment.

Abstract

Chuzaimah et al, 2016. The Factors that affect to Swamp Rice Farming Income in Pemulutan Ulu Village, Ogan Ilir District. JLSO 5(1):27-34.Good management of rice farming is indispensable in order to increase farmers' income. Good management can not be separated from social and economic characteristics inherent in farmers. This research aimed to determine the factors that affecting swamp rice farming income. The research used survey method, where Pemulutan Ulu Village, Pemulutan Subdistrict, Ogan Ilir District been intentionally (purposive) as a research location. The sample was selected as many as 30 farmers from 302 population using stratified random sampling method, based on the extent of land ownership < 0,5 hectare, 0,6 to 1 hectare, and > 1 hectare. The results showed that swamp rice farming was profitable with farming income of Rp14.026.652,00 per hectare per cropping season with the R/C of 3,94. Factors that affected the income of swamp rice farming were the life of farmers, land size, and farming experience.
