Abstract

Aprisal. et al. Dynamics of Some Physical Properties of Soils Under Conservation Farming System on the Critical Land Aripan in the DTA Singkarak. JLSO 5(2):137-144.The conservation farming on critical land can improve the soil properties and maintantain for a periode of time. The purpose of this research is to study the dynamics of critical land’s physical characteristics under the influence of conservation farming at Singkarak Water Catchment Area (DTA) in Nagari Aripan. The analysis of soil sample is conducted in Soil Science Department Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. This research is designed with Split Plot Design (RPT). The main plot is a soil processing system which is: conventional soil processing (po), soil processing with mulch (p1), soil processing with compost and manure (p2) and minimum soil processing (p3), while the sub plot consists of three types of plants, they are; sweet corn (t1), soy bean (t2) and peanut (p3). Each treatment is repeated three times. Result of the research is observation data in each season of the first, second and third year. To see the dynamics of soil characteristics, data of each season is viewed through graphic which based on its trend. The result of the research indicates that utilization of critical land with conservation farming system could repair and maintain some physical characteristics of soil in each growing season, such as: decreasing volume, increasing soil organic matter, porosity, and soil permeability. Productivity of soil increases on the conventional processing with mulch, compost, and manure. Conventional soil processing with added compost and manure increases productivity for 32.58% in the first year, 45.16% in the second year, and 59.73% in the third year.

Abstract

Lindiana, et al. Rice Cultivation Images by Local Farmers in Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. JLSO 5(2):153-158. Plans and efforts in increasing rice productivity at riparian wetlands can be commenced by introducing relevant technologies; however, the selected technologies should be based on real needs or problems faced by local farmers. As a pre-requisite, if the needs and problems are not comprehensively understood, government intervention to introduce new technology may not be effective since the technology may not be relevant or affordable to local farmers. Objectives of this research are to analyze characteristics of the wetlands, farmer’s adoption capacity, and technological preferences. The research was conducted in five villages at Pemulutan District. Qualitative Grounded Theory and Quantitative Survey were employed through dialogues with 100 local farmers.  Results of the research indicated that any effort to increase riparian wetland productivity should consider the unpredictability of flood occurrences and prolonged drought. These unfavorable conditions have limited local farmers to only grow rice once per year. Local farmers were almost solely depending on rice and cultivation of other crops were rarely observed, except limited vegetables grown on elevated border of paddy fields.

Abstract

Nurhasanah et al, 2017. Response Rice Mutant Insertion Growth in the Low Nitrogen Conditions. JLSO 6(1):49-58.Nitrogen is an essential fertilizer for growing rice because N needed higher than other nutrients. Therefore, many farmers apply a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer to obtain high production. Unfortunately, the plant not utilized much and only 50-60 % of the total N was applied which able to used. It would be lost through a combination of leaching, surface run-off, denitrification, volatilization and microbial consumption. Thus, the large amount N fertilizer application increase input cost and damage the environment. To build sustainable agriculture, the screening of varieties or mutant which is capable of using N efficiently is necessary. In addition, knowledge of N regulation and mechanisms in plants needs to be exploited for efficient plant development in the use of N. This study aims to look at the response of mutant rice plants in the low N conditions and obtain mutant rice plant candidates which is efficiently in using N. Seventen mutan insertion and Niponbare as wildtype are used in this experiment. Rice mutant plants were grown hydroponically inYoshida solution with different N concentration. Under normal conditions the N concentration was 1.14 mM/L and in the low N concentration was about 0.114 mM./L. Parameters was measured in this study were plant height, root length and dry weight. The results showed that plant height mutant insertion wasnot influenced by N concentration in nutrient solution. Meanwhile root lenght and dry weight plant parameter are affected by N consentration. There are mutant insertion plant that have potential and the optimum growth ability at low N concentration, especially B101. Validation on that mutants will be done in the next research.
