Abstract

Oral and dental health is a crucial factor in determining overall systemic health, yet it is often neglected. Debris accumulation is a primary etiological factor for various oral health issues, including gingivitis and dental caries. While mechanical tooth brushing is effective, it has limitations in reaching certain anatomical areas, necessitating complementary interventions such as mouthwash. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of rinsing with a 25% Aloe vera solution on changes in the Debris Index (DI) scores among students at SMP Mutiara 5 Lembang. Methods: The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 44 students were purposively sampled and divided into two groups: an intervention group using a 25% Aloe vera solution and a control group using mineral water. Debris Index (DI) scores were measured on six index teeth. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate (Wilcoxon and mann whitney tests). Results: In the intervention group, the average Debris Index score decreased significantly from 2.3 to 0.9 (p = 0.000). In contrast, the control group showed a non-significant decrease from 2.1 to 1.9 (p = 0.145). The bivariate analysis confirmed that the 25% Aloe vera solution was significantly more effective in lowering debris scores compared to mineral water (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Rinsing with a 25% Aloe vera solution is effective in reducing Debris Index (DI) scores. The natural active compounds in Aloe vera, such as saponins, acemannan, and anthraquinones, work synergistically as natural cleansers and antibacterial agents to improve oral hygiene.

Knowledge or cognitive is the most important domain for the formation of a person's actions. Brushing teeth properly is an important factor in maintaining dental and oral health. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge of brushing teeth and dental and oral hygiene of students in grades IV and V of SDN 1 Kukuh Marga Tabanan 2025. This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The types of data used are primary and secondary data using question sheets and direct examination. The results of the study on 33 respondents showed that the percentage of knowledge of brushing teeth was the highest, namely 58% in the sufficient category, with an average of 66.7. The percentage of students' dental and oral hygiene was the highest, 60.61% in the moderate category, with an average of 1.66. The highest percentage of dental and oral hygiene based on toothbrushing knowledge was found in students who had good knowledge of toothbrushing with moderate dental and oral hygiene of 66.67%. The results of the Spearman correlation analysis obtained a significance value of 0.466 greater than 0.05, there was no relationship between the level of knowledge and dental and oral hygiene of students at SDN 1 Kukuh Marga Tabanan. The conclusion in this study is that there is no relationship between the level of knowledge of toothbrushing and dental and oral hygiene.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus can cause oral health problems, such as dry mouth, bleeding gums, and other dental health problems due to decreased saliva flow, which increases the risk of infection and bacterial growth. Prevention through good brushing habits is very important, and health education using flipcharts can be an effective educational method. This study aims to determine the toothbrushing behavior of patients with diabetes mellitus before and after receiving education using flipchart media. The research design used is descriptive with an observational approach. The research population is all patients who visit the health center, and the sample is taken using accidental sampling. Data are collected through observation sheets and analyzed univariately in the form of frequency distribution and mean values. The results showed that before counseling, most respondents had adequate toothbrushing behavior (78.9%) with an average score of 65, while after counseling, the majority of respondents had good behavior (94.7%) with an average score of 89.7. Counseling using flipcharts proved to be effective in improving toothbrushing behavior in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

The prevalence of dental and oral health remains a problem in every province in Indonesia, including Bali. Preschool-aged children are one group vulnerable to dental and oral diseases because they generally still have behaviors that do not support dental health. Teeth in kindergarten children are generally still primary teeth (primary teeth), with tooth structure and morphology that are susceptible to caries. Data from the 2018 Bali provincial health risk (Riskesda) explained that the incidence of dental caries by age group 3-4 years was 41.8%. In Denpasar City, the 3-4 year age group suffered from dental caries as much as 14.8%. As age increases, the prevalence of dental caries also increases. The still low behavior of brushing teeth properly is one of the causes. Low tooth brushing behavior is likely due to a lack of knowledge, facilities and infrastructure for brushing teeth, such as ergonomic sinks. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ergonomic sinks on changes in students' tooth brushing behavior. The research method used pre- and post-observation of tooth-brushing behavior, namely behavior before and after education and practice of brushing teeth using ergonomic sinks in kindergarten. The results showed that after education and daily brushing habits using ergonomic sinks, most students' behavior changed to the adequate, good, and very good categories. This indicates a positive change in tooth-brushing behavior, from the majority of students initially categorized as needing guidance to the majority being categorized as good. The statistical test results showed a significant effect on student behavior change. The conclusion of this study is that education through the provision of ergonomic sinks has a significant effect on students' tooth-brushing behavior. It is recommended that kindergarten caregivers continue to provide education and remind children to brush their teeth at least twice a day.

Abstract

Dental and oral health issues remain a significant concern in public health, especially among elementary school-aged children. This condition can affect their learning process and overall growth and development. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and the condition of dental and oral hygiene among 49 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 13 Sesetan, South Denpasar, in 2025. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions regarding dental and oral health knowledge, as well as direct examination using the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). The results showed that out of 49 students, 27 (55%) had very good knowledge, 10 (20%) good, 8 (16%) fair, 3 (6%) poor, and 1 (2%) failed, with an average knowledge score of 76.7. Meanwhile, the level of dental and oral hygiene based on the OHI-S index indicated that 20 students (41%) were in the good category, 20 (41%) moderate, and 9 (18%) poor, with an average score of 1.91 (moderate category). It can be concluded that good knowledge is not fully accompanied by optimal hygiene practices.
