Abstract

This paper is aimed at providing a comprehensive analysis of the types and techniques used in translating expressions of anger found in Jane Austen's novel entitled Pride and Prejudice by using Molina and Albir’s (2012) translation techniques and Madow’s Theory of Anger. The study uses a qualitative method to describe and analyze all the data. There are 33 data points on anger expressions found, and each finding reveals that direct and indirect anger expressions are the most common types of anger found in both novels, which are then followed by thinly veiled expressions. Among the 18 translation techniques, transposition emerges as the most frequently applied, indicating the significance of restructuring the source text to suit the target language while still preserving the original meaning. Amplification, adaptation, variation, and literal translation are the next frequently used techniques, emphasizing the translator’s efforts to deliver the emotional situations of anger expressions. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of linguistic compression and amplification in maintaining the emotional impact of anger expressions across languages. In general, this research focuses on the complexities and techniques used in translating expressions of anger, making significant contributions and offering valuable perspectives for future translation studies

Abstract

This research involved one class as an experimental class to determine the effectiveness of the Prototype Curriculum Policy in Mathematics Learning at SMP Negeri 2 Kajen, Pekalongan Regency. The research design used was a group pretest-posttest design. The main problem in this research is whether the prototype curriculum policy is effectively implemented in mathematics learning for class VII students at SMP Negeri 2 Kajen. This type of research is pre-experimental research. The research results show that: (1) The average score of students' mathematics learning outcomes before the prototype curriculum was implemented in mathematics learning was 22.8 and was deficient. These results showed that 25 students, or 100%, had yet to reach the KKM, which meant that classical completion had not been achieved. (2) The average score of students' mathematics learning outcomes after implementing the mathematics learning prototype curriculum is 85 and is in the high category. These results found that 24 out of 25 students, or 96% achieved the KKM, which means that classical completion was achieved. (3) The average percentage of student activity is 83%, if it is linked to the student activity criteria, namely 75%, then student activity reaches the active criteria. (4) The student response questionnaire showed that 97% responded positively to mathematics learning. From the research results above, it is concluded that the prototype curriculum policy for mathematics learning is effectively implemented at SMP Negeri 2 Kajen, Pekalongan Regency

Abstract

The texts have been selected from 45 articles of 15 units of Selected Readings of Business English and from prominent economic English newspapers in China and the United States—China Economic Net and The Economist. Employing the vocabulary corpus software, Range32, we conducted a statistical examination of vocabulary coverage and the frequency of corresponding terms in the British National Corpus (BNC). This rigorous analysis aims to ascertain whether the content of the textbook aligns with the requisites of specific professional tests. Additionally, it serves to assist students and learners of Business English in China by aiding them in identifying suitable English-language reading materials. This research provides a valuable reference, guiding individuals toward reading newspapers that align with their vocabulary proficiency in English. The study findings indicate that to attain a fundamental comprehension of the reading materials, achieving a 95% vocabulary coverage requires a command of 4,000 to 5,000 vocabulary words for Selected Readings of Business English, 4,500 to 5,000 vocabulary words for China Economic Net, and 5,000 to 6,000 vocabulary words for The Economist. For a more fluent reading experience, corresponding to a 98% vocabulary coverage, a mastery of 7,500 to 8,000 vocabulary words is necessary for Selected Readings of Business English, 8,500 to 9,000 vocabulary words for the China Economic Net, and 10,000 to 11,000 vocabulary words for The Economist. And this study suggests that the vocabulary thresholds for Business English majors should be 4,000 to 6,000 (95% vocabulary coverage) and 8,000 to 11,000 (98% vocabulary coverage)
