Abstract

Reading is the foundation of mastering a language as well as a primary instrument to obtain information. Reading teaching has always been a hot topic in English language teaching (ELT). The present study sought to trace the characteristics of existing studies on English reading teaching in China. Based on research articles in the CNKI database collected by Chinese core journals and CSSCI in the past two decades, 603 studies on English reading teaching were selected and analyzed. Firstly, the Cite Space software is used to visualize the annual number of published papers, research hotspots and research trends. Subsequently, a detailed content analysis was conducted to distil and summarise the predominant research foci in English reading instruction in China over the past twenty years. The results show that the number of published papers on reading teaching research in China increases first and then fluctuates. The evolution of research topics is discerned to encompass three distinct stages and was influenced by prevailing educational policies. The research foci mainly include three aspects: English reading teaching modes, English reading teaching strategies and English reading ability. This comprehensive review aims to map out the current research landscape, shedding light on future scholarly inquiry in English reading teaching

Abstract

Nowadays, tracer studies are widely applied to trace events or facts. In this research, tracer study was used to find out and improve the quality and communication of alumni of the Tadris Mathematics Department of IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon. Improved communication is very useful for the smooth flow of information from alumni to other parties in a reciprocal manner. The objectives of this research are: 1) Explore information about the gap between the education provided and the world of work, 2) Find out the relevance of curriculum implementation, 3) Evaluate the relationship between the curriculum and studies in the department as scientific development. The methodology used is tracer study, with a sampling technique using snowball sampling. Based on the research results, the following results were obtained: 1) There is a gap between the education provided and the world of work. This is proven by the lack of skills courses and practical courses. Of the 29 graduate skills courses, there are only 5 courses that are skills in nature and 5 that contain practicum. 2) There are 53 students who have obtained jobs and which match their competencies. There were 23 students who got jobs and those who were not suitable. Meanwhile, 10 people did not fill out this questionnaire. This means that alumni students majoring in mathematics have competencies appropriate to their type of work. 3) The curriculum developed in the department is still not well integrated. This occurs due to a lack of attention from lecturers to aspects of the curriculum

Abstract

Based on a survey conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the interest in learning among students in Indonesia is still relatively low, ranking 64th out of 120 countries. In 2007, the Global Institute reported that only 5% of students could solve high-level problem-solving tasks. This study aims to assess student responses, learning interests, and mathematical problem-solving skills following the implementation of Linktree. Linktree is an e-learning platform that offers ease in managing information despite being HTML-based. Moreover, it integrates seamlessly with various media, offers multiple tools, and presents customizable interfaces. The research methodology was quantitative, with a sample of 30 eighth-grade students from Junior high school. Data were collected through five mathematical problem-solving essay questions and questionnaires assessing student responses and learning interests post-Linktree usage. Findings revealed positive student responses towards Linktree, particularly in number patterns, with an average percentage of 84%, indicating excellent feedback. Post-Linktree usage, students exhibited an average percentage of 78% across four indicators of learning interest, classified as good. The students improved their mathematical problem-solving skills, with an average N-gain score of 0.64 and an N-gain percentage of 64.37%, categorized as moderately effective. Linktree's contribution to students' learning interest and mathematical problem-solving skills was significant, as evidenced by the hypothesis testing results, with a determination of 0.776 or 77.6% for learning interest and 0.629 or 62.9% for problem-solving skills. In conclusion, Linktree significantly contributes to students' learning interests and mathematical problem-solving skills

Abstract

A number of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems have already demonstrated their strength to undertake various translation tasks which are not too demanding. However, the incredible advancement of AI technology in recent years has endowed Large Language Models (LLMs) with great potential, so we may imagine that they may even do better than NMT working as translators. To figure out whether LLMs have better performance than NMT in translation, and how genres and translation directions may influence translation quality, this article chose two LLMs, namely, ChatGPT 3.5 and Wenxin Yiyan, or ERNIE Bot 3.5, and one NMT system, namely, DeepL, to test and compare their performance in Chinese-English translation, employing a quantitative method including BLEU scoring and SPSS analysis. The results show that there is no significant improvement in these LLMs’ translation quality compared with the NMT system, and all the chosen systems tend to perform better in non-literary translation than in literary translation and produce TTs of higher quality in Chinese-English translation than in English-Chinese translation

Abstract

In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in education, particularly in foreign language acquisition, has seen significant growth, leading to notable improvements. This paper explores the potential of AI to enhance the efficiency of foreign language learning through personalized learning, interactive practice, real-time feedback, diagnostic evaluation, flexible learning paths, cultural immersion, and efficient learning strategies. Additionally, it addresses concerns regarding over-reliance on technology, potential negative impacts on self-learning abilities, diminished interpersonal communication and cultural understanding, limitations of personalized education, technical challenges and reliability issues, as well as ethical considerations such as data privacy. Furthermore, the paper highlights the risk of marginalizing the role of human teachers in the learning process. Drawing on both positive and negative impacts of AI in foreign language learning, the paper concludes by offering suggestions for effective language learning strategies

Abstract

Burnout is one of the most common emotions in foreign language learning. In the new era, mixed online and offline model of learning foreign languages has become a trend, but learning burnout still exists. Many scholars have investigated the burnout of foreign language teachers or students in traditional classroom teaching, but there is little research on online and offline blended teaching. Through questionnaire and interview, the present study uses the burnout rating scale to investigate mixed online and offline college English learning burnout of 60 college students of different genders, majors and grades. The results show that burnout is common in mixed foreign language teaching. The general burnout situation in online and offline teaching is not noticeable while certain specific syndromes are different. Foreign language learning burnout is related to gender, major and college English learning length. This study hopes to provide more thinking space for reducing foreign language learning burnout and improving students’ well-being

Abstract

To explore the research hotspots and trends in translation technology, this study utilizes the literature visualization analysis software CiteSpace to conduct a bibliometric analysis of relevant literature on translation technology from 2013 to 2023 in the Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. This research indicates a continuous increase in annual publications from the Web of Science, while the publications from China National Knowledge Infrastructure show no clear upward or downward pattern over the past 10 years. This study also reveals that scholars in the field of translation technology mainly publish papers independently. Most importantly, this study discovers that machine translation, translation technology, artificial intelligence, computer-assisted translation, post-translation editing, neural machine translation, and talent training emerge as research hotspots in the field. Post-editing, google translate and natural language processing are the research frontiers in the field of machine translation in the last three years. This study can provide scholars in the field with the latest hotspots and frontiers so that they can conduct more innovative research
