Abstract

English language teaching in Indonesia faces the challenge of selecting effective learning media that meet the needs of the curriculum. In this context, this study evaluates English learning media using a checklist-based approach designed in accordance with the SNP (Standar Nasional Pendidikan). The evaluation includes an analysis of important aspects such as effectiveness, relevance, accessibility, and compliance with the curiculum. Data were obtained through the collection of various sources, including teaching materials and other evaluation instruments, to assess the extent to which the learning media met the national standards. Through this analysis, this study aims to provide useful insights for the development of more effective learning media as well as assist educators and policy makers in selecting media that support the achievement of English learning objectives. The results of this study are expected to enrich the understanding of instructional media quality in the Indonesian educational environment.

Abstract

Picture-based learning has gained increasing attention for its potential to enhance engagement and vocabulary acquisition in English for Young Learners (EYL). However, practical implementation in early childhood education remains challenging. The study follows the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A total of 12 relevant articles were extracted from 379 articles indexed in Scopus and Taylor & Francis (2015–2025). The sample consisted of teachers and students that used visual media or images, while articles that did not address challenges or solutions in these contexts were excluded. This study revealed the challenges faced by teachers in implementing picture-based learning include: teaching strategies and classroom management, selection of appropriate visual materials, and limitations of inclusive approaches for students with special needs. (58%) articles identified teaching strategies and classroom management (TSCM) as the main challenge due to the lack of teacher training in visual-based classroom management. To overcome these issues, the study proposed several solutions, including applying stricter criteria when selecting materials, incorporating interactive strategies based on multimodality, and applying multisensory approaches to support inclusivity. This study provides important insights for EYL teachers in optimizing the use of picture media and emphasizes the need for practical guidelines to support the needs of diverse students.

Abstract

The seminar “Know Yourself, Protect Your Future” held at State Islamic Junior High School 1 Palangka Raya aims to provide students with an understanding of the importance of self-awareness and self-care. This is especially important considering their age, which is a transitional period from childhood to adolescence, during which curiosity about the outside world increases. This seminar activity is expected to educate students about dangers they should avoid early on, such as free association, drugs, bullying, and others. Moreover, this study also aims to guide students in discovering their interests and talents as a first step in planning a more focused and meaningful future. The seminar was conducted using an interactive and reflective approach, involving active student participation through discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and encouraging students to reflect on their feelings and experiences to better understand themselves. One session of the seminar included critical listening, directed towards thought-provoking questions that indirectly encouraged students to think critically in answering them. At the end of the seminar, each student was invited to make a personal commitment about the things they should do for a better future.

Abstract

This research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This was conducted to solve the students’ problem with English learning. The students mostly did not have a high interest in joining this subject. The subject research was 27 students 7 grade at SMP Ma’wattaibin. The research purpose was to increase the students’ interest in English learning. This research was done in 3 cycles. The first and second cycles consisted of three meetings, and the third cycle consisted of two meetings. A preliminary survey and a survey of each cycle were conducted. These surveys were done to compare the students’ interest before and after taking action. The findings revealed average of students’ interest in the preliminary survey was 12%. This indicated the low students’ interest in English learning. Then, first cycle showed that the average student interest improved, which was shown by 50% of students being interested in learning English using interactive activities. Yet, the second cycle revealed that the average of students’ interest in English learning was 70%. This current research underlines that teaching English should be constructed by interactive activities in which the students are actively involved, not monotonous methods.

Abstract

This study aims to review the impact and challenges of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language teaching in the era of globalization. The background of this review is based on the significant digital transformation in language teaching methods triggered by technological advances, especially AI which offers a more adaptive and interactive approach to learning. The method used is a literature review with a qualitative descriptive approach to various scientific publications in the last 10 years obtained from databases such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and ScienceDirect. Literature review shows that AI can expand access to rich learning resources, and support adaptive learning. However, negative impacts and challenges such as reducing the role of the teacher as a critical learning facilitator, ethical issues, teacher readiness and over-reliance have also emerged significantly. Therefore, although AI has great potential in revolutionizing ELT, its application must consider ethical principles, human resource readiness, and the balance between technology and human touch in the learning process.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore how storytelling is implemented in teaching speaking at FAJAR English Course in Pare, Kediri. The study used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the real teaching process without manipulating any variables. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, focusing on the teacher’s preparation, materials, media, methods, evaluation, and student responses. The results showed that the teacher prepared lessons with a clear syllabus and lesson plan; used meaningful stories with moral values taken from books, family traditions, and online sources; and applied engaging media like dolls, drawing cards, and even monopoly games. Storytelling was used as the main method, encouraging students to summarize or create their own stories to share in class. Evaluation was conducted through weekly performance assessments, followed by discussion and support in additional sessions. Students responded enthusiastically and participated actively, showing that storytelling not only builds their speaking fluency. boosts their confidence and motivation in a fun, non-formal learning environment, but also develop their English speaking skills.

Abstract

In the digital era, the use of technology in language learning has created new opportunities for English learners to practice speaking in more flexible and interactive ways. One such innovation is the Episoden platform, which provides real-time, one-on-one speaking sessions with users from different countries. For many learners, especially non-native Speakers, confidence remains a major obstacle in speaking English fluently and spontaneously. This study aimed to explore users` self-confidence in speaking English through their personal experiences on the Episoden platform. Specifically, the research focused on Identifying how users describe their confidence-building process and  what factors influence their confidence, A qualitative descriptive approach was chosen to gain deeper insight into users`Experiences. Using an open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed through the flow model by Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing.The results indicated that users became more confident over time through regular use of Episoden. Supportive conversations, clear topics, and a non-judgmental atmosphere were key factors, while common challenges like accents and technical issues helped build speaking routines. In conclusion, Episoden supports users in building self-confidence by providing real practice and a safe space to communicate and take risks.

Abstract

This study explores the role of English song in enhancing speaking skills among santri at Al-Khoirot Islamic Boarding School. Recognizing that traditional classroom methods often emphasize reading and writing, the research focuses on how music, particularly English songs, can supplement these approaches by improving students’ oral communication. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five santri who frequently listen to English music. Thematic analysis was applied to identify recurring patterns and insights. The findings reveal that English music plays a significant role in improving students’ pronunciation, vocabulary, and speaking fluency. Listening to songs helped learners become more familiar with native pronunciation and natural intonation, while repetition in lyrics supported vocabulary retention. Additionally, the study shows that music enhances students’ motivation, reduces learning anxiety, and creates a more engaging environment for language acquisition. Although its effect on listening comprehension was noticeable, it was less pronounced than its impact on speaking skills. Importantly, students emphasized the need for song selection that aligns with Islamic values and is appropriate for their language level. The study concludes that English music, when properly integrated and supported with interactive activities, can serve as a valuable tool to enrich speaking.

Abstract

Public speaking is an essential skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, yet it often induces significant anxiety that hinders their academic, professional, and personal development. This study aims to evaluate the levels of public speaking anxiety among EFL learners and examine the relationship between state and trait anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 42 purposively selected EFL learners in Kampung Inggris, Pare, who participated in public speaking tasks such as presentations and discussions. Results revealed moderate to high levels of both state and trait anxiety, with female learners exhibiting slightly higher anxiety than males. The findings underscore the substantial role of trait anxiety in shaping learners’ speaking performance and highlight the need for targeted interventions, including anxiety management techniques, gender-sensitive support, and the creation of a safe learning environment. These implications are critical for developing effective strategies to reduce public speaking anxiety and enhance oral communication competence among EFL learners.

Abstract

This study explores the digital construction of beauty standards through the X account of Indonesian social media celebrity Amanda Azahra. The present study draws upon social constructionist theory (Berger and Luckmann), Stuart Hall's representation theory, and celebrity studies, in order to examine the manner in which beauty norms are produced, negotiated, and contested in Indonesian digital culture. Employing qualitative methods, namely content analysis, discourse analysis and cultural analysis, the research examined Azahra's most viral posts from 2023–2025, alongside audience responses and media coverage. Findings of this study indicate that the construction of beauty on social media is an interactive, contested, and culturally embedded process, rather than a unidirectional influence. Azahra's digital persona has been shown to reinforce and disrupt norms via strategic visual self-presentation, calibrated authenticity, and vulnerability branding. The audience's reactions to this phenomenon range from admiration and parasocial attachment to ironic objectification and critique. Three key framing mechanisms are identified: direct beauty attribute definitions, causal links between beauty efforts and positive outcomes, and associations with aspirational lifestyles. Present study contributes to the understanding of how social media reshapes beauty discourses, gendered identities, and evolving values in contemporary Indonesia, revealing tensions between traditional femininity and modern digital practices.
