Abstract

Staying in the new environment makes the person feel pain if he/she does not know the culture of it. It is called culture shock. Culture shock is the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. It can happen when someone who stays in another place has different culture. Culture shock is negative thing because it can make the one who gets it feel confused, stressed, or depressed. The research analyzed the movie, which had culture shock situation as the story. The title of the movie was Karate Kids. Karate Kids movie told about the 12 years old boy, Dre Parker, who moved from Detriot U.S to Beijing China. He felt stressed because his new place was very different with his home before. The research is useful for the students who want to stay or move to new place with different culture for long time. The purposes of the research were to know what culture shock is faced by Dre Parker in Karate Kids Movie, to know how Dre Parker solved the problem, to give the beneficial information for the students who read this research. The method used by the researcher was qualitative research with observation and documentation as the instruments. The results of the research were based on Winkelman’s theory. There were four stages in culture shock. Those were the honeymoon or tourist phase, the crises phase, the adjustment and reorientation phase, and the adaptation; resolution; or acculturation stage. Abstract

The article aims to describe the students’ perceptions toward the focus of learning English for specific purposes: EAP in the English Educational Field after the students had learned English for specific purposes course. A quantitative approach was used to process the questionnaire data analyzed statistically, and a qualitative approach with a descriptive study was conducted to answer the problem of this study. The researcher used a a closed questionnaire and document of observation to the 6th-semester students of Islamic Institute of Hasanuddin, Pare Kediri in the academic year 2020/2021. The result of this study from a closed questionnaire indicates that students' perceptions toward the focus of learning ESP: EAP in the English Educational Field refers to a very strong group with 88,8% based on the score interpretation criteria. It was also proved from 34 respondents answering 15 points related to data sources that the average percentage in the strongly agreed was 56 %, agreed was 35%, doubtful was 6%, disagreed was 3%, and strongly disagreed was 0%. Therefore, it can be concluded that although the students had different perceptions, they were able to focus more on learning English for specific purposes or academic-related English or based on their field or needs. The result of observation obtained from the field as data sources was the involvement of the students’ needs towards the particular use of vocabularies and the use of tactics to accomplish the target of learning English for specific purposes/ English for academic purposes through presentation and negotiation. Abstract

The purposes of the study were to test assumption underlying the effect of the jigsaw in teaching reading, the sign in the achievement of an extrovert student and extrovert student, and the interaction between jigsaw and personality. Before the researcher give the treatment in experiment class the researcher give questionnaire about personality into class, the questionnaire from EPI. The place of the research at MA Sabilul Muttaqin with the students 47 of eleventh grade that consist of 25 student in experimental they are 17 extrovert students and 8 introvert student and 22 in control they are 14 extrovert students and 8 introvert student. The researcher used experimental factorial design is a procedure of testing a hypothesis by setting up a situation in which strength of the relationship between variable can be tasted. And the research used Two Way ANOVA to calculate the data. From the result is jigsaw technique more effective than conventional technique, and there are differences on significant between extrovert and extrovert. Abstract

Language as a means of communication. Human beings always use it in interaction. They are many functions of language. With language, they can talk about culture, economic, education, politics, social, or anything that happens in their life. Therefore, it plays important role in social life. In daily written or spoken form of language which we use in communication, it consists of performing speech acts. According to Austin (1993), all expressions of language must be viewed as acts. He distinguished in three types, there are locution, illocution, and perlocution. The problem of this study is Whar are the classification of illusionary act used by advertisement of coronavirus in the Indonesian Ministry of health? The purposes of this study are to describe the classification of illocutionary acts used by advertisement of coronavirus in the Indonesian Ministry of health. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative based on its purpose and the type of the data. the result of this research is found two data of illocution between five kinds of illocution that She took from Searly’s theory. Those data were found are directives (commanding action, ordering action, and advising action) and assertive (informing things action), while the commisives, declarative and expressive were not found in those advertisements about coronavirus. Abstract

Speaking plays an important role in language learning, so the students should master the speaking skill in order to answer the questions appropriately and efficiently. In this case teachers have to help students change their inefficient speaking habits (speaking word by word, focusing too much attention on form, and relying heavily on dictionary), by teaching them efficient speaking skills. A guided speaking is an effective way to do this; in this way the students can learn how to speak in different purposes and situation. Questioning paper is written question on paper that has purpose for self-practice everywhere. It is an alternative way to improve their speaking skill. Questioning paper technique is the activities of students to guess and make conversation by using some questions provided. It can help and stimulate the students to make conversation. The researcher uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the approach of the research. Classroom Action Research (CAR) is systematic inquiry with the goal of informing practice in a particular situation. CAR is a way for instructors to discover what works best in their own classroom situation, thus allowing informed decisions about teaching. This classroom action research (CAR) was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle covered four stages of activities. They were as follows: (1) the planning of the action (2) implementing (3) class observing (4) reflecting on the action. In this research, the researcher finds the significant improvements in the first and second cycles. Furthermore, the researcher administered post test to measure the improvement of speaking skill by using questioning paper. The researcher has found the significant results that is 95 % of students earning above. Keywords: Speaking skill, Questioning paper

Abstract

The aim of this research is to know whether there is any significant correlation between ways of learning toward English achievement at the first-year students of SMPN 1 BANYAKAN. The design used was a descriptive quantitative correlation research design. It was conducted in SMPN 1 BANYAKAN with the population was 252 of the first-year students of SMPN 1 BANYAKAN. While the sample of this research was 155 students. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire, test, and documentation. The data gotten was analyzed by SPSS version 20. to find descriptive and product moment. The results of the research were: the students’ ways of learning belong to “good” while the percentage is 45,3% and English achievement belongs to the “very low” category while the percentage is 32,4%. From the interpretation, data is “very low correlation” and negative with the score is -0.067 and not significant. Keywords: Correlation, Ways of learning, and English achievement

Abstract

In the industrial revolution 4.0., autonomous learning is considered as a desirable goal in English language teaching and learning in Indonesia. The movement towards learner-centered approaches has resulted in more emphasis on the benefits of learner autonomy in the success of English language teaching and learning. The research examines the capabilities of vocational secondary English teachers in Probolinggo, East java, Indonesia to engage students’ autonomous learning. The term capabilities refers to substantive freedom or opportunities that English teachers hold to do and to be a certain thing that they consider valuable. Data for the study were generated through interviews with twenty vocational secondary English teachers across remote area, urban area, Pesantren and state vocational secondary school. English Teachers were interviewed by autonomous learning issues based on their knowledge and understanding of these issues. Further, data were obtained from classroom observations and analysis of curriculum documents which include the national curriculum framework of Indonesia, English teachers’ syllabi and lesson plans. Data analysis is qualitative. The study revealed that vocational secondary English teachers in Probolinggo are still problematic and facing several challenging particularly in view of autonomous learning which was centered on traditional didactic and teacher-directed modes of delivery. This indicates that Indonesian vocational secondary English teachers in Probolinggo are not effectively engaged in autonomous learning in spite of their concerted efforts to do so.

Abstract

This article looks critically the comparison between English and French Gender. The problem that will be discussed in this article is: What kind of similarities and differences do they have in gender, especially in distinguishing male from female persons? The significance of the study are to get inputs on gender in English and French in order to improve their ability in understanding gender from both languages . One of the characteristics of Indo-European language is gender, which classifies nouns to express sex distinctions. The following discussion will deal with two forms of gender, natural and grammatical gender, and the ways of showing gender. From the linguistics analysis of English and French gender that has been done in this article and the comparison between them, it can be concluded that both languages have some differences and similarities in the application of gender. The differences are focused on the kinds of gender used, English uses natural gender while French uses grammatical gender. The use of grammatical gender makes French does not have neuter gender. So the inanimate objects are considered to have gender, masculine or feminine, and the ways of showing their gender are afforded by the use of article, le for masculine and la for feminine.

Abstract

Personality is a form of behavior that is shown by a person as a form of self-introduction that is influenced by customs and culture in the environment where humans live and interact. This research was talking about what personality that Lucy has. The researcher tries to find Lucy’s Personality on Narnia the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe film, which is including on extrovert or introvert child. The purpose of this research is to understand personality in young learners as like Lucy Pevensie. In research, researchers use qualitative research. Qualitative research is research that does not intersect with numbers (count) but rather observes the object under study and then provides a description of the object under study. Researchers use descriptive analysis method, which is to describe phenomena that occur naturally or man-made which focus more on character and quality. The data source that the researcher uses in this thesis is Narnia the Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe film. The researcher used data collection techniques by watching Narnia the Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe film, identifying all the scenes played by Lucy Pevensie and the dialogue in the film to get the data, grouping the data that addresses the problem to be studied, analyzing the data that has been collected and make conclusions due to research. After the data has been collected, the researcher analyzed the data by watching the scene played by Lucy Pevensie and paying attention to the dialogue from the film "NARNIA THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE" repeatedly until the researcher gets a complete understanding of Lucy's Personality. Selecting and classifying data related to the problem under study. Conducting and analyzing the data collected. The last is drawing a conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the character of Lucy Pevensie is an extrovert. Extrovert is a characteristic of someone who is always active. Lucy's characteristics as extrovert child are brave, high curiosity, easy to interact, open child, forgiving child, care and like to help others, and stubborn.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the writing skills of students in class XI MIPA in 2 SMAN 7 Kediri through picture series. The objective of the study to know how picture series can improve students’ ability in writing explanation text through Picture Series. CAR is carried out through a cycle consisting of four stages, starting with planning the action, continuing with the action learning and observation activities and ends with a reflection for study and analyze data obtained through action. This research was conducted in one cycle, the criteria of success if 80% of students score above the KKM 75 and with an average score of at least 80. Data were collected from observations, tests, and documentation. The findings in this study found that the use of picture series significantly improved students' writing skills. This can be seen from the average in preliminary test score was 61.75 and the cycle test score of 80.62, increasing to 18,87 based on the criteria of success above, this research considered as successful. This research shows that therefore, using picture series can improve students' writing skills.
