Abstract

The sedimentation unit using the continuous discharges flow (CDF) method can remove raw water turbidity of 91.09% with initial turbidity of 75.248 NTU. The performance of the sedimentation unit using the CDF method needs to be tested at high turbidity, which is more than 100 NTU. Sedimentation using the CDF method with the addition of plate settlers is an alternative that can be done by increasing the turbidity value. This study aims to determine the performance of the sedimentation unit using the CDF method with the addition of plate settlers in the removal of high turbidity. The study used a laboratory-scale reactor of 240 L/hour, with units consisting of plunge coagulation, baffle channel flocculation and a 5% CDF method sedimentation unit with plate settlers. The study used artificial raw water with variations in turbidity of 110.355 NTU, 132.035 NTU, and 153.338 NTU. The research shows that the efficiency of removal of turbidity on average for the variation of turbidity is 92.32%, 91.25%, and 89.87%, respectively. The correlation value and significance of Rank Spearmen from the variation of turbidity to reactor performance are -0.926 and 0.00, respectively. In other words, the more turbid the raw water, the lower the reactor performance

Abstract

Bangladesh is a small disaster prone country in South Asia. The natural hazards of this country increased due to global warming. An informative investigation of cyclone lifetime activity within the Bay of Bengal has been in Analyzed. Cyclone characteristics, mainly lifetime, occurrence were investigated with 21st century cyclone data calibration. The changes of cyclone characteristics were investigated from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department data. The data are observed by their own technology. A statistical and mathematical estimation was performed to investigate the trend and make a best fit of the cyclone behavior line. Major fitted curves are spline, shape-preserve, cubic, quadratic and linear. A significant change of the characteristics has been found due to change of time, which plays a vital role in changing the surge behavior and associated environmental parameters within this area. An increasing trend of occurrence behavior has been found from this study. Significant information comes from this study and the information is about the lifetime of a cyclone. Although the lifetime of cyclones fluctuates due to changes in climate conditions, the lifetime of cyclones will increase in the future. This means that the future cyclone gathers more energy and power. So that, in near future Bangladesh will face more powerful cyclone hazards.

Abstract

Function analysis primarily distinguishes components in a system and explains the function interactions amongst the components' pairs. It assists designers in revealing the main problematic areas (components) and contradictions. The trimming method assists in generating a simple design; thus, it can reduce costs and the number of faults. This study integrated the function analysis and trimming method as a systematic approach to product concept design based on the problem-oriented concept. A spinal board is an evacuation device for patients with an injured spinal cord. A case study of improving a spinal board design is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. The study resulted in an alternate design of spinal board with some inventions which deliver improved performance in decreasing injury, increasing comfort and safety, and satisfying the users' requirements.

Abstract

The easier it is to access the internet, almost all human activities are helped. One example is the sale and purchase of goods to the delivery of the ordered goods to the buyer's house. This is increasingly widespread after the emergence of several marketplaces that collaborate with shipping service providers to deliver ordered goods to buyers' homes. Problems occur when the shipping courier who comes to the buyer's house does not meet the buyer or the buyer's relatives to receive the ordered goods. So that there is a tendency for the courier to put the ordered goods in any place which can cause the goods to be lost. Based on this, a solution will be given in this research, by making a low-cost smart locker for home users to receive goods ordered from online shopping safely without having to meet face-to-face with conventional buyers. In addition to helping receive goods automatically and safely, the use of this smart locker will also minimize buyer contact with couriers directly, in order to break the chain of spread and transmission of several viruses, including Covid-19.

Abstract

The research in this final project discusses the economic calculation of electrical energy consumption in a 220 VAC system at a residential load on a type 54 house. The simulation of the AC system is carried out with ETAP 12.6 software. Simulation is done by making installations with residential loads with cables that have a length according to the distance to the loads. From the ETAP simulation, it can be seen the current and line resistance values on the report manager display so that the losses and efficiency of the two systems can also be known. Based on the results of simulations and calculations, the total value of the losses that occur in the 220 VAC system is so small that it looks like 0 watts, this happens because the simulation results are shown in kWatt in the ETAP.

Abstract

Maize is a vital nutritional cereal for the infants, young children and adults. The environment which they are cultivated in Africa could expose to metal accumulations from soils, thereby posing health risks to the consumers. The objectives of this study were determine metal accumulations in maize grains (Zea mays L.) cultivated close to Gosa and Gwagwalada solid waste dumpsites and their health risks via consumption. A total of 36 soil samples (12 each from dumpsite soil, farmland soil and maize grains) were collected and analyzed for some metals [cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and mercury (Hg)] using standard atomic adsorption spectrophotometer. The transfer factors and metal health risks in adults (60 kg; 22-48.9 years), young children (35 kg; 6-15 years) and infants (15 kg; 1-6 years) were evaluated using mathematical models. The ranges of metal (mg/kg) detected were 10114.00 to 0.52, 10.45 to 0.001 and 13.62 to 0.001 for dumpsite, farmland and maize grains, respectively. Though, within FAO/WHO and EU safe limits, Zn was significantly (p<0.05) highest in both locations, while Cd, Cr and Hg (0.001 mg/kg) were the least. Only Zn had transfer factor value below 0.5, which indicates possibilities of anthropogenic elevations. The estimated daily intake from consumption of maize grains (57 g) were generally high for Zn and low for Ni, Cd, and Hg in exposed individuals. The hazard index was below 1, which indicates no significant non-carcinogenic risks in exposed populations. The incremental lifetime cancer risks was below 10-6 and this suggest potential lifetime cancer risks in the order infants ? children ? adults. This study concluded that daily consumption of maize cultivated closed to dumpsites poses potential lifetime cancer concern and thus maize farming around dumpsites needs to be discouraged for safety reasons.

Abstract

Currently, the use of fuel is increasing, it is feared that fossil fuels will run out in the near future and the national energy policy make the target of the new renewable energy to reach 23% in 2025, especially those most widely used for electricity fuel. Energy from vegetable waste is one of solution to produce new biomass energy an alternative energy to replace fossil fuels. The potential of biomass energy at Indonesian, especially in the West Sumatra area is very large, one of which is solid waste from rice husk agricultural products. In this article, use the rice husk gasification downdraft method to produce synthetic gas to internal combustion engine and coupled with electric generator. The results of rice production at West Sumatera in 2021, which is total of 1.361.769 tons of dry unhulled rice (GKG), will produce 272.353,8 tons of rice husks or about 20% of the total rice production, and mass syngas is 235.335,47 tons, the energy potential electrical 118.924,82 MWh per year. The generator can runs 216 days continuously and cost of fuel is $ 224.64/day vs $302.23/day a diesel engine. So fuel of biomass gasifier 34.5% more efficient compared with the diesel engine.
