Abstract

Remote English teaching becomes a trend during the pandemic of Covid-19 outbreak. Schools in Indonesia are forced to conduct teaching and learning activity remotely during Work from Home (WFH) regulation. However, not all teachers were ready to teach virtually. This study aimed at investigating the teachers’ and students’ readiness toward remote English teaching. The subject were the English teachers at SMAN 1 Kubutambahan. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was implemented in this research. The data were collected through an online survey and followed up with an interview. The data were collected through an online survey and analysed using Ideal Mean score analysis. The survey used a questionnaire which contain four dimensions, namely technology, innovation, people, and self-development to investigate the teachers’ and students’ readiness level.  The research finding showed that English teachers were categorized in the ready category, which means they were ready in conducting remote English teaching. The result of this research can be used as an evaluation for the teacher in order to improve their readiness level in the future.

Abstract

Assisting students to have good reading comprehension is essential to be accomplished during learning. Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) comes as the most used strategy to promote students’ literacy and build their reading comprehension based on the pre-observation in junior high schools in Karangasem Regency. This study aimed to investigate students’ perception of using SSR to enhance students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 1 Abang. The design of the study was mixed-method. The setting of this study is SMPN 1 Abang, located in Abang district, Karangasem regency, Bali province. This study used a questionnaire as the instrument of this study. The type of questionnaire used is a mail survey, specifically the questionnaire created in scale items by using Likert-type questions. As the study results, the mean score was categorized as very high because it was 4.50 and the interval was 4.00<M<5.00. In other words, the student's perception of using SSR to enhance students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 1 Abang showed very positive qualifications. Thus, it implies that SSR is helpful to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how teachers apply voice notes to teach speaking skills at SMA Candimas Pancasari through recount text topics. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the data obtained through observation, interview, and questionnaire methods were analyzed descriptively. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the research subject, of which there was 1 English teacher and 77 students who had been researched by researchers to be observed, interviewed, and given a questionnaire. The results showed that the implementation of voice notes can be done through six steps in pre-activity, main-activity, and post-activity.  Related to its’ implementation, the teacher also encountered several challenges, namely internet connection, low participation, students' lack of vocabulary, poor access in remote areas, and teacher difficulties in evaluating students' assignments. In addition, students gave positive opinions on the implementation of voice notes on WhatsApp in class, it can be proven where students dominantly choose "agree" and "strongly agree" on statements obtained from cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects.

Abstract

Literature like short stories, novels, poems, and songs can contain many values in teaching English specially in writing skill. The present study focuses on the use of literature in teaching English to enhance EFL students’ writing skill. By employing descriptive method, it is revealed that literature can enhance EFL students’ writing skill in many aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. These results were revealed directly through EFL students’ perspectives and indirectly through author’s description during the observation. From these findings, it can be concluded that the use of literature in teaching English are beneficial and efficient in enhancing EFL students’ writing skill. Observation, open-ended questionnaire, and interview, literature in teaching English were classified as media in teaching English, topic in teaching English, and activity in teaching English. The present study concludes that the use of literature in teaching English are important to enhance EFL students’ writing skill.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims at investigating the teaching aids used to teach vocabulary for young learners. The data were collected using questionnaires and interview to determine the kinds of teaching aids used to teach vocabulary, the challenges in implementing them, and how English teachers face these challenges. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively by referring to Miles & Huberman (1994). The results show that the dominant type of teaching aids used by the English teachers to teach English to the young learners is audio-visual which is a combination of visual and audio aids was seldomly used by the teachers. According to the interview, the teachers felt that students were more engaged by visuals and audiovisuals because teachers can place interesting decorations to guide the students; for example, a student's favorite cartoon character or animal. The result of the interview also showed that the teachers found challenges in implementing the teaching aids, namely (a) time consuming (b) quality of teaching aids (c) technical difficulties. To face the challenges, teachers usually consider alternatives that are equivalent to the media that should have been used, allocated time, and also skills in operating electronic to implement the teaching aids.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to recognize and to discover the application of the strategy used by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension during online learning for seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Singaraja. The research design used qualitative, with the research instruments in the form of observation and interview. The results of the research obtained were that the two English teachers used a question and answer strategy during the online learning process in teaching reading comprehension for seventh-grade students. Therefore, the strategy taught students how to interpret what kinds of questions were asked of them, as well as where to discover the answers, in that way, allowing students to think about the texts they read. In addition, motivating them to think creatively and collaboratively while challenging them to use their thinking skill, so that interactions between the English teacher and students could occur properly during the online learning process.

Abstract

Project-based learning is a learning method that uses projects as a medium. This learning model can be used as an alternative during the pandemic. This study aims at identifying; 1) The implementation of PjBL during Covid-19 pandemic; 2) The advantages of PjBL during Covid-19 pandemic; and 3) The disadvantages of PjBL during Covid-19 pandemic. This research method is library research that collected the data from research articles in national and international journals. Articles are selected based on several criteria. The study found that (1) the implementation of PjBL covers three main steps, they are planning, implementing, and evaluation, (2) there is five advantages of the implementation of PjBL during covid-19, and (3) there is one disadvantage of the implementation of PjBL during covid-19.

Abstract

Training students' thinking skills also have an essential role in developing students' abilities in the learning process. To achieve and train students' thinking skills, appropriate planning is needed between teachers and students. This article aimed to find out the profile of the teacher and the obstacles faced by teachers in making lesson plans skills and the process of higher-order thinking skills in the lesson plan class X SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja teacher. This research was designed in a qualitative descriptive research method. The subjects of this study were the English teachers at SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja class X. This research showed that the teacher knows about preparing lesson plans and applying higher-order thinking skills. The teacher can also apply and develop creatively the use of higher thinking skills to the lesson plan to support the learning process.

Abstract

Education is a critical aspect in the advancement of a country. They received the new thing through adequate education which they can use to generate superior human resources. Based on this age, new technologies are being developed to make the education in learning process easier. One of the examples of an online learning platform is Google Classroom. The purpose of this research is to identify the implementation of Google Classroom and what problem are faced by students on the use of Google Classroom in online English learning. The method of this study is qualitative research to collect the data. The data is collected by using observation to the middle school at SMP Ayodhya Pura Selat and interview guide to the 8 grade students. The result shows students feel Google Classroom is ineffective used in learning process cause of some problems such as the internet connection, the task implementation in Google Classroom felt difficult than face to face in the school, limitation in supporting equipment such as smartphone and laptop to conduct the online learning.

Abstract

This research was purposed to describe students’ reading comprehension through skimming-scanning technique at SMPN 6 Singaraja and to describe supporting and limiting factors in implementing skimming and scanning for the 7th grade students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 6 Singaraja. Descriptive qualitative research is the method employed in this investigation. Teachers and students were the focus subject of this investigation. The result showed that the supporting factor in implementing skimming and scanning for the students’ reading comprehension in 7th grade SMPN 6 Singaraja is the technique is easy to use for certain text. The limiting factor in implementing skimming and scanning for the students’ reading comprehension in 7th grade SMPN 6 Singaraja is the students’ limited vocabulary which mean needs vocabulary enrichment. Then, the 7th grade students’ reading compprehension through skimming-scanning technique implemented in reading in SMPN 6 Singaraja are categorized as good with mean score 75.5.
