Abstract

Political meme creators play an important role in conveying political messages, shaping public opinion as well as the practice of decision making through the political memes produced. Political memes circulating on various social media during the campaign period of the 2019 Presidential Election 2019 largely contain hate speech, hoax and character assassination. Nearing the grand campaign for the 2019 presidential election, political memes were popping up everywhere, containing humorous narratives in conveying political messages and support to the 2019 Jokowi-Amin pairing, which were distinct when compared to political memes in general. This study aimed to explore distinct actions by political humor meme creators around the grand campaign for the 2019 presidential election for the 2019 Jokowi-Amin pairing on Twitter. This study used a qualitative approach with the case study method. Primary data were obtained from observations and in-depth interviews with political humor meme creators who produced political humor memes nearing the grand campaign for Jokowi-Amin. Secondary data were sourced from digital materials (political memes, political humor memes, videos, and digital media). The results showed that the distinct behaviors displayed by these political humor meme creators influenced by habitus and capital aspects which aim to describe tastes and form classes in their social structure. Tastes are not only limited to consumption patterns of food, clothing and culture, but also include political ways of political humor meme creators who use humorous narratives in political memes to show their social class by not resorting to hate speech in winning the Jokowi-Amin pairing.

Abstract

Recent data have shown that approximately 5.86% of 275.773 million of the Indonesian population are practicing open defecation. To align with the sustainable development goals (SDGs), efforts are being made to eradicate unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, including open dedication, by 2030. This achievement requires the intervention of both government and non-governmental organizations, as shown by LAZ HARFA in the Banten Province. The organizations successfully motivated impoverished citizens to construct proper sanitation facilities without subsidies. This study aimed to understand social construction of the impoverished community towards unsubsidized healthy latrines program implemented by LAZ HARFA in the Kertaraharja village, Pandeglang Regency, Banten. The analysis was carried out using a qualitative approach, by employing a purposive sampling technique to select informants based on their involvement in healthy latrines program. The total number of informants was 15, consisting of 8, 6, and 4 as key, main, and additional informants, respectively. The results showed that the community firmly believed in achieving unsubsidized healthy latrines program was possible, despite their impoverished conditions. This program was recognized as a step towards adopting a clean and healthy lifestyle. The community shifted the mindset from practicing open defecation to embracing a clean and healthy lifestyle through collaborative efforts, conducting transcheck walks, village mapping, and making commitments to participate in healthy latrines program. Furthermore, social interaction was fostered among the community through the purchase of materials for constructing latrines facilities and toiletries. LAZ HARFA also employed participatory development communication model that focused on provocation and simulation to evoke feelings of shame, disgust, and nausea. The community introduced economic empowerment and environmental quality enhancement programs to accelerate the progress of healthy latrines program.

Abstract

Reconciliation involves rebuilding relationships among people and groups in society and between the state and its citizens. The protracted conflict in Somalia had devastating effects on Somali citizens. Formulating a genuine social reconciliation model that can contribute to trauma healing, trust building, and an enabled environment for forgiveness and sharing narratives continues to pose daunting challenges to peace and state-building in Somalia. This paper provides analytical thinking by coalescing traditional Somali reconciliation approaches and modern peace-building principles. It attempts to establish a new model based on Somali cultural norms and values. The paper pinpoints the legal, institutional, and political issues that are prerequisite for any viable and successful social reconciliation. It recommends capacity development of public institutions mandated to facilitate and oversee national, regional, and local reconciliation exercises while underscoring the pivotal role of women and other members of civil society.

Abstract

As the digital era reshapes human interactions, concerns regarding technology-facilitated sexual violence (TF-SV) have come to the fore. This study investigates the impact of TF-SV on the well-being and academic performance of undergraduate students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Quantitative data were gathered from 360 participants from Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, using random sampling. Findings revealed a significant positive correlation between exposure to TF-SV and psychological distress indicators, including anxiety and depression. Moreover, negative correlations emerged between TF-SV exposure and self-esteem, suggesting a multifaceted impact on students’ psychological well-being. Academic performance indicators, including grade point average, showed a negative correlation with TF-SV exposure, indicating its potential to hinder educational success. The study advances knowledge by elucidating the nuanced repercussions of TF-SV within a Nigerian context and contributes to the broader discourse on technology-mediated vulnerabilities. Recommendations for educational institutions include awareness campaigns, digital literacy programs, support services, and policy reforms to create a safer digital environment for students. By addressing the complex challenges posed by TF-SV, institutions can safeguard students’ well-being and academic pursuits in the digital age.

Abstract

Annaba, Algeria's fourth largest city, has acquired national and international importance due to its openness to the Mediterranean Sea. Over the last ten years, its rapid sprawl has continued to exacerbate the situation, leading to increased consumption of space, particularly green structures. The main objective of this study is to assess changes in land use and land cover (LULC) over the last 30 years, focusing on the green structure of the future metropolis. Google Earth Engine (GEE) was used to explore land cover classification using the random forest algorithm. A spatial model of the main changes in land cover between 1984, 2004 and 2021 was also generated. The principal drivers of land use change are human activities and urbanization, including fires and land clearing. The spatial pattern of change is mainly due to inappropriate investment policy and uncontrolled urbanisation. This is explained by the main results of the land use conversion processes between 1984 and 2021. The comparison shows a decline in forests and green land, mainly due to conversion to urbanised land, cropland, bare land or other land. Similarly, bare land and other types of land declined over the 1984-2004 period in favour of urbanised or cultivated land. Furthermore, it compromises any possibility of sustainable development at a time when we are facing climate change.

Abstract

Introduction: The victims in Indonesia who have been wrongly arrested in various phases of the criminal justice process and have accordingly experienced suffering are not yet included within the terms. The existing term does not clearly describe the officials responsible for the wrongful arrest while enforcing criminal law either. This study aims to address these problems. Method: Using literature review as a research method to explain problems regarding the terms of wrongful arrest, the study also uses critical victimology, which includes structural victimization and state crime. Results: The process of wrongful arrest in Indonesia comprised of victims who were released in the early phase of the case investigation and victims who have served their sentences. Additionally, officials in the criminal justice system, especially the police, and judges, have a significant role in attracting people into the criminal justice system and keeping them in the position of the perpetrator until the last phase, even when all the evidence point to the victim’s innocence. Conclusions: Such a characteristic can be described as a vacuum. It tends to suck the victims until the final phase despite its ability to release them in the middle of the process with the help of parties of the justice system. Given this problem, wrongful criminal justice process as a new term has emerged, which includes and explains problems not adequately addressed by the previous term. Through this term, it is expected that the victims will get more attention and receive compensation from the state.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, in the face of industrial competition, companies are attempting to instill a culture of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) as a symbol and image of their existence. However, it is unfortunate that the presence of OSH in the company does not always serve as a barometer of the company's normative compliance with OSH. In practice, the rules governing worker behavior still show varying degrees of permissiveness. The practice of OSH must be accompanied by moral values in order to achieve the desired condition. Therefore, there are two behavioral approaches in OSH communication practices in companies: (1) do the things right, which means following the rules. This does not necessarily resolve OSH problems, as ‘rules’ at the minimum only regulate employee behavior and (2) do the right things, which is moral in nature, which allows workers to act and behave according to their nature because what is outlined in the rules does not always reflect free will, so in the end each worker must find a way to do what’s best. The critical-interpretive approach with phenomenological method in research focuses on the meaning and awareness of OSH caused by communication distortion in the company on workers' behavior towards social reality as something complex, continuously evolving and full of meaning. In the development of Axel Honneth's conceptual dimensions of recognition theory (love, rights and solidarity) has a central role and solution in the distortion of corporate communication, especially in the implementation of OSH programs that emphasize the importance of recognizing worker relationships and developing self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem, in the context of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) and Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC), recognition theory provides implications for the importance of recognizing workers’ contributions to the goals achieved in the company, thereby increasing workers' dignity and individual values in the company. Without social recognition, OSH will not be able to serve as operational barometer of a start-up company. It will only serve as a framing to protect the company, “as if” it already fulfills its legal obligations towards OSH.
