Abstract

The majority of global population is in the cities and most tourists are concentrated in the cities. Research on the relationship between urban farming and tourism is gaining popularity in urban studies. In Malaysia, community urban farming has been identified as a solution to sustainable development to provide food in or out of the city. This study is about how the community at Desa Impian, Merbau Sempak promotes organic vegetable farming to academicians and business communities. The idea is to promote this area as a sustainable tourism hub for researchers and business communities. This study is a multimodal semiotic analysis to better understand the dynamic of community farming culture in Malaysia. Using qualitative design and multi-layered analytical framework to explore interactive meanings construed through the functionality of various semiotic resources in multimodal narratives this study reveals the dynamic multi-layered nature of government, individual community members, and public voices about community farming culture from a Malaysian socio-cultural context. On a deeper level, farming at Desa Impian means self-identification and sharing of identity that gives rise to a sense of belonging. This study contributes to the knowledge of multimodal socio-semiotic and narrative theories on sustainable urban farming tourism in Malaysia.

Abstract

Ecotourism is a form of travel which has a potential to serve as an environmentally, socioculturally, and economically viable option for promoting sustainable tourism development. Whilst ecotourism can be a financially rewarding activity for the local economy, it can also have some drawbacks, just like any other kind of tourism, that must be addressed. The study aimed to explore the paradox on accredited ecotourism sites manifested in the province of Laguna. The study significantly concluded education paradox - as a means to promote sustainable practices may have a downside, as ecotourism sites failed to offer educational activities and the location paradox- the conflicting views on sustainable ecotourism among different demographics pose challenges for achieving genuine sustainability of on ecotourism. The significant differences in perceptions across locations reveal a tension. These paradoxes highlight the complexities of achieving truly sustainable ecotourism. Addressing them requires a holistic approach that acknowledges trade-offs, embraces diverse perspectives, and prioritizes long-term well-being over short-term gains.

Abstract

Rural tourism promotes sustainable development through economic, socio-cultural, and environmental means. To embrace rural tourism development, communities need to thoroughly evaluate the benefits and drawbacks associated with such changes. The challenges of this process entail assessing the consequences of the decision made in response to the social interactions occurring within the community. This study conducts a systematic review to identify research gaps in the application of Social Exchange Theory (SET), focusing on how attitudes, networking, and participation influence community decisions towards rural tourism. The findings reveal that these factors significantly shape local communities' perspectives and involvement in tourism development. Concluding with a conceptual framework grounded in SET, the paper provides insights into how attitudes, networking, and participation can drive sustainable rural tourism and facilitate cultural heritage conservation.

Abstract

The potential of social media to promote ecotourism products and services, and nature conservation through engaging content, needs thorough exploration. This research focuses on TikTok social media platform, which has seen a surge in tourism-related content, particularly linked to Indonesian domestic tourism. As awareness of domestic tourism grows among Indonesians, the use of hashtags to highlight local attractions has become prevalent. This study aims to investigate TikTok's efficacy as a marketing tool for promoting domestic tourism in Indonesia, utilizing the hashtag (#) feature. The frequency of likes, comments, and shares of 50 videos (5 videos from each of 10 popular hashtags) were analyzed. Additionally, the videos against the 7 dimensions of tourism product qualitywere further analyzed. The cumulative engagement metrics for these TikTok videos included 14.9 million likes, 213.2 thousand comments, and 580.9 thousand shares. Despite more than half of the videos falling short of all seven tourism product quality dimensions, they still managed to attract millions of views and significant engagement. The findings suggest that TikTok holds considerable potential as an effective marketing tool for tourism industry, especially in enhancing visibility and engagement for Indonesian domestic ecotourism and nature conservation efforts. Future research should further explore the impact of content quality on long-term tourism sustainability and conservation awareness.

Abstract

The field of education for sustainable development advocates for new teaching methods that offer hands-on, engaging, and transformative learning experiences that encourage critical and systemic thinking within the framework of sustainable development. Higher education institutions strive to support the attainment of SDG 4 by promoting inclusive, fair, and high-quality education. Service-learning in higher education is in tune with the educational principles of critical and transformative pedagogy and facilitated through implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches in training professionals that will be socially critical and committed to social transformation, with the goal of achieving a larger social justice. Consequently, one of the major challenges attributed to the lack of social practice and community service in the learning environment leads to the detachment of students to the community, as well as the low social responsibility among the undergraduates. The study aimed to fill the research gap in the literature on the impact of service-learning pedagogies among students based on knowledge, attitude, and spirit and how it is correlated with professional development, personal development, social transactions. Furthermore, this study highlights how civic engagement and sustainable community development, the integral components of service-learning, contribute to and align with the principles of sustainable tourism. By connecting these elements, the research emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of service-learning in shaping socially responsible professionals and fostering sustainable tourism

Abstract

This study aims to determine how much carbon stock is stored in logged-over areas by comparing carbon stock in virgin forests. Calculate potential biomass, carbon, carbon dioxide uptake, and economic value of CO2eq uptake in the Logged area of PT Hutan Mulya using purposive sampling data collection techniques for each plot and non-destructive methods through allometric equations. The highest carbon stock potential is in the tree-level diameter class and the location with the highest carbon stock is in the virgin forest area. Meanwhile, the logged area based on the company's establishment from 2011–2022 covering an area of 14,583 ha has a carbon stock potential of 772,537 tons C to the carbon dioxide storage value of 2,835,210.57 tons CO2eq. Based on the assumed price of USD 4.5, the potential economic value of carbon obtained by the government through carbon sales tax is IDR 85,056,317,100. The net profit obtained by the company is IDR 109,494,570,499.42. In contrast, the potential net economic value of the carbon business project scenario results in a combined logged area and virgin forest area of IDR 160,960,838,842.31 for the company and IDR 125,035,753,500 for the government.

Abstract

Bamboo plays a vital role in preventing soil erosion and conserving water. In East Nusa Tenggara Province, many communities rely on bamboo species, making its cultivation a priority due to the region’s favorable biophysical conditions and available support from Non-Governmental Orgabization as facilitators. Approximately 387 villages have undergone assessment and socialization processes aimed at developing bamboo villages, including the Reok sub-district. One of the next steps in this process is conducting an inventory of bamboo standing stock in the area. This study aims to assess the species diversity and standing stock of bamboo in Reok sub-district. Research was carried out at 11 randomly selected sampling points across six villages, using the single circular plot method (radius of 17.9 m), with a total of 55 plots. Each plot was surveyed to identify and quantify clumps and culms, categorized by age (young, medium, and old). Four bamboo species were identified: Bambusa spinosa, Bambusa vulgaris, Gigantochloa atter, and Dendrocalamus asper. Gigantochloa atter was the most prevalent species, found at nearly all survey points, and had the highest number of clumps and culms. The estimated standing stock of bamboo in the Reok sub-district is 57,496 clumps, with a total of 3,692,890 culms. Gigantochloa atter accounted for the majority, with 35,526 clumps and 1,815,593 culms. This standing stock holds significant potential for further development, as bamboo is a key non-timber forest product (NTFP) in the region, with the potential to enhance the local economy.
