Abstract

METAPHOR OF MODALITY IN CLASSROOM INTERACTION *Raissa Sati ** Dr. Siti Aisah Ginting, M.Pd **Indra Hartoyo, S.Pd, M. Hum ABSTRACT This study aims at analyzing the types and realization of metaphor of modality in classroom interaction of grade eleven Global Prima National Plus Medan. Qualitative research design was used by the researcher to conduct this study. The subjects of this study were the teacher and the students in grade eleven Global Prima National Plus Medan in academic 2018/2019. The data were collected by observed and recorded to find the types of metaphor of modality being used and also to find out how the metaphor of modality is realized in classroom interaction. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman data analysis technique. The findings of the study show that teacher and students used all the types of metaphor of modality in classroom interaction, such as modalization (probability 86,79% with 46 occurances, usuality 1,88% with 1 occurance) and modulation (obligation 3,77% with 2 occurances, inclination 7,54% with 4 occurances) . Metaphor of modality in classroom interaction was realized by the category probability (think, believe, possible), usuality (ussually), obligation (be obligied to) dan inclination (be allowed, recommend, permission). Abstract

THE USE OF BLENDED LEARNING IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 20 MEDAN *Nurul Aulia **Anni Holila Pulungan **Yeni Erlita ABSTRACT This research dealt with blended learning used by the teachers in teaching writing recount text. The objectives of this study were (1) to explain the use of blended learning for teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students; (2) to analyze the problems faced by teachers of using blended learning in teaching learning process of writing recount text. This study was qualitatively conducted that involved two English teachers of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected by using recording, interview and observing the whole processes of teaching writing. The findings of this study showed that both teachers used the three processes in blended learning setting, such as: conventional learning, emphasizes learning actively and interactive learning. It was also found that the use of blended learning was used in the scientific approach activity. There were four problems faced by teachers in using blended learning, such as the problem of the traditional mindset, the problem of managing and assessing learner progress, bandwidth, and confusion in using the application. Both teachers faced different problems in their classes. Keywords: Blended learning, teaching, writing

Registration Number: 2163121044. Developing Media By Using Podcast in Teaching Listening of Recount Text to Grade X Students of Tourism Vocational School. A Thesis. English Educational Program. State University of Medan.2020. The study was aimed to develop media by using Podcast in teaching Listening of Recount text to grade X students of Tourism Vocational School. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages: gathering the data, need analysis, design media, validating by experts, revising, and final project. The subject of the study was Grade X Students of Tourism Vocational School. The instruments of data collection were gathered by administrating interview and distributing questionnaire to 28 respondents to get students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English learning media which can motivate students to understand listening recount text. The product was validated by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The product result was Podcast that contains audio media to be used in mastering the recount text listening. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used in teaching listening recount text by getting average percentage of 97.5% categorized as excellent. THE USE OF TRANSLATION IN TEACHING WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT *Esterina Sipahutar **Masitowarni Siregar **Anni Holila Pulungan Universitas Negeri Medan ABSTRACT Sipahutar, Esterina. Registration Number: 214332101. The Use of Translation in Teaching Writing Narrative Text. A Thesis. English Educational Program, State University of Medan, 2020. This study aimed at describing the use of translation and investigating the reasons of using translation in teaching writing narrative text grade ten at SMK Broadcasting Bina Creative Medan. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken 2 English teachers of SMK Broadcasting Bina Creative Medan. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of the online teaching writing narrative text. The findings of this study showed that there were 73 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. The reasons of using translation in teaching writing narrative text were facilitating communication, teacher-student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching writing skill. Keywords: translation, teaching and narrative text.

ABSTRACT Hakim, Muhammad Hamdi Ali.Registration Number: 2153121024. Teachims’ Question Based On Hots (Highim Order Thinking Skills) at Grade XI Student at SMKS 2 Prayatna Medan. A Thesis. English Education Study Program, Medan State University, 2020. In learning progress, question take an important part, questions as the bridge between student and teachim which is connecting both of them to make the atmosphere in the classroom more active and meaningfull. Question also have been used as a tool to evaluate the student knowledge.Teacher usually use examination to evaluate students skill especially in final examination. This research is focused on the importants of reading skill of higher order thinking skill. The objective of this research is to find empirical evidence of the distribution of thee higher order thinking skill based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy in reading qustions. The researcher used analysis method because the researcher identifies specified characteristics of the material in the examination paper. Furthemore, the data collected are qualitative data because the data are collected in the form of words, which are the reading questions. The reading question in school final examination used as data. The result of distribustion of highim order thinking obtains 10 of 23 reading question with 7 analyze, 3 Evaluate and 0 Create.
