Abstract

This study deals with the improvement of the vocational school students’ achievement through Project-Based Learning Method. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was a class in the second year student of SMK TKJ HARAPAN STABAT. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and the qualitative data were gathered by administering oral test and diary notes. The result of the quantitative data indicated that the score of the students improved from cycle I to cycle II with a pre-test mean of 59,5, the test of cycle I was 70, and the test of cycle II was 83,8. The result of the qualitative data indicated that the use of Project-Based Learning Method helped to improve the students’ achievement in speaking English.   Key Words: Speaking, Project-Based Learning, Oral Test, Diary Notes

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of Description, Interpretation andEvaluation (DIE) Technique on the students achievement in writing descriptivetext. The research was conducted in experimental design. The subject of this studywas the 2013/2014 grade XI students of SMA N1 Tanjungpura. The sample thatwas involved in this research was 60 students that were chosen randomly, that ineach group there were 30 students. The experimental group was taught byapplying Description, Interpretation and Evaluation (DIE) Technique, whilecontrol group was taught by applying Lecture Method. The instrument used in thisstudy was an subjective test. The data were taken by administering the pre-testand post-test to both of experimental and control groups. The data were analyzedby using t-test formula, the analysis showed that the score of the students in theexperimental group was significantly higher than that of students in the controlgroup at the level of significance 0,5 with the degree of freedom (df) 58; the tobservedis 3,3 while the t-table is 2,00. To obtain the reliability of the test, thewriter used the Pearson Product Moment Formula. The result of the study showedthat the reliability of the test was 0,92. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) isrejected.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop the appropriate English reading materials in report text for students of electrical engineering program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 35 students of electrical engineering program and administering interview to the teacher. The result of this study was a set of developed teaching reading materials as supplementary entitled “English for Electrical Engineering Students” which covers of three chapters on the topics of (1) things in electrical about hammer drill, (2) natural phenomena about lightning and aurora, (3) social phenomena about short circuit and electric shock. It is also accompanied by documents such as syllabus, lesson plans, reading materials, worksheets, and assessments. Key words:Research and Development (R&D), Reading Materials, Report Text, Vocational School, Electrical Engineering Program.

Abstract

This study was attempted to improve students’ achievement in writing narrativetext by watching movies. This study was conducted by using classroom action researchin two cycles. Cycle I consisted of four meetings while Cycle II consisted of twomeetings. The subject of the research was class VIII-A SMP SWASTA IMMANUELMEDAN. The number of the students was 34. To collect the data, the instruments werequantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was the scores of the studentsand the qualitative data was interview sheets, observation sheets, and diary notes. Basedon the writing score, students’ score were improving in every test. It can be seen inOrientation test, Test I in Cycle I, and Test II in Cycle II. In Orientation test, the meanscore was 37.94 then it was improved to 65.85 in Test I. In the end of cycle II, the meanscore for test II was again improved to 83.41. Based on interview sheets, observationsheets and diary notes, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. In line withthe data, it showed that the application of watching movies significantly improvedstudent’s achievement in writing narrative text. English teachers were suggested to givemovies to be watched as guidance on students’ narrative writing in the class.

Abstract

This research is aimed to develop song as media in writing descriptive text basedon the students’ needs and curriculum 2006 for the tenth grade students of SMA N2 Kisaran. There is one problem formulated in this research, How is song mediadeveloped in writing descriptive text to the tenth grade students of SMA N 2Kisaran. In order to answer the problem, the researcher conducted Research andDevelopment (R & D) method. The subject of this research was 2016/2017students of the tenth grade of SMA N 2 Kisaran. The number of the students was35 students. The data of this study was collected by using need analysisquestionnaire and expert judgment. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated byusing percentage to get the information of students’ need before developing songmedia. Expert judgment data were calculated by using score average of criteriainterval of expert judgment to know the validity of song media which has beendeveloped. After the data analyzed, it was found that the experts’ judgment resultwas 3.65 which had a good criteria interval.

Abstract

Developing Speaking Board Game of Descriptive Text at MAN 1 Medan Hamka Ade1 1Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Medan Medan, Indonesia 1 adehamka98@gmail.com Abstract The aim of this study is to develop a learning media on teaching Descriptive Text at MAN 1 Medan. This study was conducted by Research & Development (R&D) design. The source of the data are the students of MAN 1 Medan which consists of thirty two students. To collect the data, the online questionnaires to the students of MAN 1 Medan was shared to obtain the students’ needs of learning media of descriptive text in the classroom and conducted an interview with the classroom teacher. There are some steps should be done to develop a learning media: Evaluation and Needs Analysis, Learning Media Design, Learning Media Development, Validation by Experts, Revision and Final Product. After doing the Evaluation and Needs Analysis, it is found that the existing learning media used in the classroom to teach Descriptive Text is not interesting for most students and unable to enhance their ability especially in Speaking skills. It can be shown from the result of the questionnaire that 87.5 % of students need a learning media to help them in improving their ability in English especially in descriptive text topic, and 46.9 % of students prefer Speaking Board Game as their learning media. The product has been validated by the experts namely English lecturer and English teacher. The product result was Speaking Board Game which is modifying Snake and Ladder game that is acclimated with the basic competence of K13. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used on speaking descriptive text by obtaining the average percentage 95.1% or categorized as excellent. Abstract

This study deals with improving stuudents’ achievement in reading comprehension through natural approach. The objective of this study is to iinvestigate whether there is any significant improvement of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension when it is taught by using natural approach. The subject of the study was Grade XI students of  Nasrani 3 Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta Nasrani 3) Medan. There were thirty one students. They were taught by using Natural Approach. The instrument for data collection were teacher made test, observation sheet and questionaire. The techniques of data analysis applied were quantitative and qualitative. In analysing the data, the students were given three reading tests namely, Orientation Test, Test Cycle I and Test Cycle II. The mean of the students’ score for the first reading test as Orientation test was 51.61 the second reading test as Cycle I test was 66.61 and the third reading test as Cycle II test was 76.61. The total percentage of the improvement from the first reading test to the third was 77.41%. the conclusion is that the procedures of natural approach can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The qualitative data shows that the students were enthusiastic and interested in reading comprehension. It is suggested that teachers should apply Natural Approach as one of the media in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study dealt with the effect of applying Think Talk Write strategy on students’ achievement in writing spoof text. It was an experimental research. The subject was social students of Grade XI, SMA Negeri 17 Medan, which consisted of 113 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument to collect the data was writing test. The result of the reliability was 0.70, and the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed the scores of the students in the experimental group were higher than in the control group at the level of significant=0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 72,t-observed 4.871> t-table 1.994. The findings indicate that applying Think Talk Write strategy significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing spoof text. English teachers are suggested using Think Talk Write strategy in order to improve students’ achievement in writing.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to know the existing English speaking materials for the students of hospitality study program, (2) to investigate the relevant English speaking materials for the students of hospitality study program, and (3) to develop appropriate English speaking materials through Task – Based Learning for the students of hospitality study program. This research was conducted at SMK Negeri 3 Tebing Tinggi. The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) through three phrases: 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The instruments used in this research were documentation sheet, interview and questionnaire. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed in the descriptive analysis and the data from expert judgment results were using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study was a course book of speaking materials through task – based learning which consist of title, objective, let’s start, language in use, let’s practice, grammar in focus, and language reference. The task – based learning materials consist of three units, they are welcome to Grand Aston Hotel, talking on the phone, and what do they look like. Based on the experts’ judgement result, the score was 86.5 which belongs to good category based on Dirgeyasa (2011), since the range is (70 – 89).

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Mind Mapping Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, Junior High School (SekolahMenengahPertama:SMP), which consisted of 207 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was writing descriptive text. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied William Knight formula. The result of the reliability was 0.95, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant μ= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (Df) 72, t-observed value 3.510 > t-table value 1.9932. The findings indicate that using Mind Mapping Technique significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Mind Mapping Technique in order to improve students’ writing achievement.
