Abstract

This study was aimed at describing how the teachers taught listening comprehension of descriptive text based on 2013 Curriculum and describing the reasons of why the teachers did the ways. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The data sources of the research were the English teachers of SMA Immanuel Medan. The data were the processes of teaching listening comprehension of descriptive text and the reasons of why the teachers did the ways of teaching. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model which were data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the teachers used scientific approach steps in learning activities based on 2013 Curriculum in the teaching listening comprehension of descriptive text and the underlying reasons of the teachers‟ ways in teaching listening comrehension were the teachers believed that the students the students could comprehend and understandthe text by comparing the kind of texts, knowing the definition and text strucutre of texts, translating the difficult words and repeating the the recording of material. The knowledge of mastery the concept of teaching listening comprehension and skill of realization of the concept into real teaching behaviors will help the students‟ skill of listening comprehension be better.

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing Analytical Expositionthrough Debate Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom actionresearch. The subject of the research was class XI IPA-1 SMAN 1 Pancur Batuconsisting of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of sixmeetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative dataand diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet as qualitative data. Based on thewriting score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In the first cycle test, themean of writing score was 61,67. In the second cycle test the mean of writing score was71,36. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found thatstudents were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showedthat Debate Technique can improve students’ achievement in writing AnalyticalExposition.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students ofCerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach(AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English readingmaterials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School studentsespecially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development(R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3)Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) finalproduct. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus,students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this researchshowed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic schoolstudents’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developedthrough Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet theIslamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials wererecount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Lifeand the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher andEnglish lecturer. Both of them agreed that new English reading materials weresuitable with the Islamic school students’ needs.

TEACHER’S ROLE IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT *Rizki Khairani ** Prof. Dr. Sumarsih, M.Pd ABSTRACT Khairani, Rizki. Registration Number: 2161121035. Teacher’s Role In English Classroom Management. A Thesis, English Educational Program, Faculty Language and Arts, State University of Medan, 2021. This study deals with teacher roles used in English classroom management. The objectives of this study were to explain the teacher’s role and analyze how the teacher realize their role in English classroom management. A descriptive qualitative design used in this study. The data collected by observing the teacher’s role in two classes of grade ten and interview the two English teachers at SMA Negeri 11 Medan. The data analyzed based on Marmoah & Denmar theory. The findings of this study showed the first teacher did not apply teacher’s role as a motivator and evaluator. The second teacher applied seven teacher’s roles completely in teaching and learning process. It can be concluded that generally teaching and learning process of English subject in SMA Negeri 11 Medan was achieve the learning objective and have effective learning. In addition, the two teachers applied the roles of teacher as learning resource, facilitator, good manager, demonstrator, and guide while one of them did not apply the role of teacher as motivator, and evaluator. Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ writing achievement in aprocedure text by using Still Pictures. The method of the study was Classroom ActionResearch with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of the study was the students ofGrade VII students’ MTs. S. Syahbuddin Mustafa Nauli. The research was conducted intwo cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings. The instruments for collectingdata were taken from writing tests as quantitative data. The result shows theimprovement of the students’ score from orientation test to Cycles I and II tests. Themean of the students’ score for orientation test as Test I was 50.41, Cycle I test was66.25, and Cycle II test was 85.41. The total percentage of the improvement fromOrientation test to Cycles I and II tests was 99.2 %. It can be concluded that the use ofStill Pictures improves students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. Thequalitative data taken from Observation Sheet and Diary Notes show that the students’were enthusiastic and attracted in writing a procedure text because the Still Picturesencourage their creativities and ideas to write better. For English teachers, it issuggested to use Still Pictures as one alternative media of teaching writing a proceduretext.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze and describe the readability of reading texts in atextbook entitled Talk Active 2 for the Eleventh Grade Senior High School. Thisresearch concerned on measuring six reading texts in the textbook which wereselected by using random sampling. The measurements used in this research wereFlesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test. The test was distributed to the 40eleventh grade students at SMA Swasta Galih Agung. Furthermore, the writerused descriptive method. From the analysis by using Flesch Reading EaseFormula, it was found that 3 of 6 texts are readable for the eleventh gradestudents. The three texts are the third text Emperor Penguin (57.06), fifth textShould Parents Censor Their Children’s Reading Material? (63.59) and sixth textDewi Sartika (53.47). But, only the third text and sixth text are appropriate for theeleventh grade students because the scores are between 50 to 60 (Fairly Difficult)which estimated for 10th-12th grade. The average readability score of the six textsby using Flesch Reading Ease Formula is 51.35 (Fairly Difficult) which isappropriate for 10th-12th grade. Moreover, the results by using cloze test showedthat text 6 has score 78.80% (Independent Level) which is predicted to be quiteeasy and the students can read the text independently. Meanwhile, text 1 to 5 havescore between 40% to 60% (Instructional Level). The average score of six texts is59.7% (Instructional Level) which predicted to be appropriate difficulty and it canbe concluded that the reading texts are appropriate for the eleventh grade studentsand the students need teacher’s assistance to comprehend the texts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop English Reading Material for Grade Eleven of Islamic Students at SMA Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI IPA consisting of 30 students and one of the English teachers. The instrumentation for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After Analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administrating interview to English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 30 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the Islamic 1 students of XI IPA need English reading materials which contain Islamic content. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. Then the procedure texts related to their background of knowledge. The products have been validated by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4.6 or 92% from English lecturer and 4.4 or 89% from English teacher. It means the developing materials are categorize as relevant or appropriate for grade eleven of Islamic students.Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Islamic students

Abstract

This study attempted to improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text through Team Games Tournament (TGT) method. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class IX SMP PAB 10 Medan Estate which consisted of 25 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of four meetings the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting the data were quantitative data (reading evaluation) and qualitative data (diary note, observation sheet and interview sheet). Based on reading scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the test I the mean was 65,33, in the test II the mean was 71,72 and the test III the mean was 84,54.Based on diary note, observation sheet and interview sheet, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in reading. The result of the research showed that Team Games Tournament (TGT) method significantly improved students’ achievement in reading comprehension especially in reading descriptive text.

Abstract

This research analyzed the readability of reading texts taken from English textbooks for grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Kabanjahe of 2016/2017 entitled English in Focus published by Pusat Perbukuan Departemen Pendidikan Nasional. Being important a textbook as the most used in sources of a class, textbook should be readable and appropriate for the students especially for the reading texts inside it. The goal of this research was to find out how is the readability of those reading texts in the textbook.To describe and investigate the readability, this research used a readability formula measurement called SMOG Grading Formula which is found by G. Harry Mc. Laughlin. The source of the data were 20 reading texts taken randomly from English in Focus textbook.The major findings of the study showed that the readability of 20 reading texts were in the variety level for students within 5th elementary school to the 10th grade high school students level, and it found that 13 of 20 reading texts or about 65% of the data are appropriate for the 8th grade students who are the user of the book. Meanwhile, this research also found reading texts which are not appropriate for the students. There are 3 reading texts are too easy and 4 are too difficult for them. So, 35% reading texts in the data is not appropriate for 8th grade students.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop descriptive writing material through text-less comic for grade X of SMA GEMA BUWANA. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing text-less comic, validating by the experts, revising and final product. The subject of the study was grade ten of SMA GEMA BUWANA. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students need text-less comic in teaching writing which can stimulate students’ ability and develop thinking process through looking for, guessing, and logically. Using text-less comic in learning process also helps students to understand the material by themselves. The product has been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the interval was 4.3. The product was categorized as “Very Good” descriptive writing material through text-less comic. The final product of this study was a material of developed descriptive writing material through text-less comic, it consisted one part that has 3 kinds of descriptive cover the learning needs.Keywords: Text-Less Comic, Descriptive Writing Material, Research and Development (R & D)
