Abstract

THE USE OF BLENDED LEARNING IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 20 MEDAN *Nurul Aulia **Anni Holila Pulungan **Yeni Erlita ABSTRACT This research dealt with blended learning used by the teachers in teaching writing recount text. The objectives of this study were (1) to explain the use of blended learning for teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students; (2) to analyze the problems faced by teachers of using blended learning in teaching learning process of writing recount text. This study was qualitatively conducted that involved two English teachers of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected by using recording, interview and observing the whole processes of teaching writing. The findings of this study showed that both teachers used the three processes in blended learning setting, such as: conventional learning, emphasizes learning actively and interactive learning. It was also found that the use of blended learning was used in the scientific approach activity. There were four problems faced by teachers in using blended learning, such as the problem of the traditional mindset, the problem of managing and assessing learner progress, bandwidth, and confusion in using the application. Both teachers faced different problems in their classes. Keywords: Blended learning, teaching, writing

Abstract

This study deals with the improving students’ speaking achievement in agreement and disagreement expressions by using problem solving strategy. The objective of this study is to find out whether students’ speaking achievement in expressing agreement and disagreement improved by problem solving strategy. The effectiveness of problem solving strategy are to make the students able to help them in solving their own and friends’ problems, especially classmates’ problem by expressing agree or disagree to the solution made and students be more active in the classroom. The findings of this study are important and useful for English teachers to improve students’ interest and ability in speaking by problem solving strategy and the researcher who wants to conduct the research related to this study. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second grade of SMP Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan which consisted of 38 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, namely cycle I and cycle II. Each cycle consisted of the four steps of an action research: planning, action, observation and reflection. The instruments for collecting data used speaking test by interview and for the quantitative data and used diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet for qualitative data. Based on the speaking test result, the students score kept improving in every test. In the orientation test the mean of the students’ score was 22.3. In the post test cycle I the mean of the students’ score was 56.3 and in the post test cycle II the mean of the students’ score was 85. Based on the observation sheet, diary notes and interview sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. The conclusion is that Problem Solving Strategy improves students’ speaking achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out whether Examples Non Examples method significantly effects the students’ achievement in writing procedure text. This study was an experimental design. The population of the study was grade IX of SMP Pemda Lubuk Pakam. The classes were divided in two groups, namely Experimental and Control group. Experimental group was the class taught by applying Examples Non Examples method, while Control group was taught by Lecture method. In this study, writing test was used as the instrument of collecting the data. Both experimental and control group were asked to write procedure text in pre-test and post-test. The data obtained were analyzed statistically by t-test formula. The result got t-observed is higher than t-table (3.808 > 2.000) at the level significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 62. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Examples non Examples method significantly effects students’ achievement in writing procedure text.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing of grammtical cohesion in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using qualitative descriptive. The subject of this research was tenth (X) grade students of SMK Swasta Putra Jaya Stabat. The number of subjects was taken from one classes. which consist of 37 students‟ and the data only take randomly for the sample of this reseach and choose 9 texts of the students‟ writing. The instrument for collecting data was writing Narrative text. The result of the study showed that (1). The grammatical cohesion was found in the narrative text written by the students‟through the applied of the cohesive device in their writing. There were found reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction in the students‟writing. (2). Each cohesive device those were found in the narrative text categorize good with the percentage around 58,49 – 72,72%, one categorize excellent with the percentage 81,25%. Substitution device categorize poor with the percentage        0- 2,04%. Ellipsis were poor with percentage around 0 – 8,33%. And conjunction were fair with 27,27 – 48,57%.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to investigate if using video significantly affectedstudents’ achievement in writing procedure text. This study was conducted byexperimental research. The population of the study was all the students of gradeIX of SMP Negeri 5 Sipahutar with the total number of the students was 96 inclasses. There were 64 students chosen as the sample by using random samplingtechnique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group andexperimental group. The experimental group was taught by using video andcontrol group was taught without using video. The instrument for collecting datawas writing test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied PearsonProduct Formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test is 0.87. Itwas categorized very high reliability. The data were analyzed by using t-testformula. The result of analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t table(3.50>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 the degree of freedom 62. It means thatthe alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.Based on the findings of this study, it found that there is a significant effect ofusing video on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the relevant English writing materials for the first grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Binjai and to develop the relevant English writing materials through contextualization for the first grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Binjai. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through three steps: 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The subjects of this study were the first grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Binjai and the English teacher at SMA Negeri 1 Binjai. The instruments in this study were questionnaire and the question sheet. Questionnaire was administered to the students, meanwhile the question sheet was used while interviewing the English teacher. The data which were gathered from the evaluation and need analysis were analyzed in the descriptive analysis, and the result of the expert judgment about the quality of the developed materials used quantitative descriptive analysis. The result of this study was a coursebook of writing materials based on contextualization. The contextualized materials consisted of three chapters which were related to the students’ real experience. The first chapter was my lovely people, the second chapter was my amazing city and the third chapter was the memorable moments in my life. Based on the experts’ judgment result, the score of the developed materials was 90 which belong to excellent category, since the range was (80-100).

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ speaking achievement through think-pair-share technique by conducting action research method. The subject of this study was XI-IPA 1’s students which consisted of 36. This study was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative (speaking test) and qualitative data (diary notes and observation sheet). Based on the data analysis from each activity, there is a significant achievement in cycle I and cycle II. In the speaking test, the students’ score kept improving in every test, the mean of the students’ score in cycle I was 66.11 and cycle II was 73.27. Based on diary notes and observation sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. The result of the research showed that by applying think-pair-share technique in teaching English, especially in speaking is effective to improve the students’ speaking achievement.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the ability of the first year students in speaking by using storytelling at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was 20 students of XC class in the first grade at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. In selecting the sample the writer used random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 12 students. The data was collected by using oral test. The researcher only measured the ability of students’ speaking in storytelling by considering five components of speaking: (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). And their speaking had been recorded by using phone recorder. From the result of analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students’ speaking ability by using storytelling was moderate. It proved by the fact that 4 students (33.33%) classified as high ability, 4 students (33.33%) classified as moderate ability, and 4 students (33.33%) classified as low ability. Based on the data, the students’ score were bigger in the high and moderate level than in the low ability level. Based on the research finding, the English teacher is suggested to consider the five components in scoring speaking ability (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). The students are suggested to do more practice in pronunciation and fluency, because they dominantly speak incorrect pronunciation and have pauses in the sentences. Students are also suggested to enrich their vocabulary by using storytelling.

Abstract

THE COGNITIVE PROCESS OF DIFFERENT GENDER IN WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT *Delima Melpiana Sianturi **Willem Saragih Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the cognitive processes of students in writing argumentative text. The subjects were the students of SMA N 2 Percut Sei Tuan from two gender; they were five female students and five male students. It was descriptive qualitative research designs of which instrument are both writing and restropective interview. The research asked the subjects to write about argumentative text. A retrospective interview was conducted to the students after analyzing their argumentative writing in order to get the subject’s cognitive process taking place during the writing of their argumentative text. The results of the data analysis showed that the cognitive processes of the students of two gender were different. The cognitive process of male students in writing was in two stages: (a) organizing the idea, (b) translating the text. Besides, the cognitive process of female students in writing was in three stages: (a) organizing the ideas, (b) translating the text, and (c) reviewing the text. The cognitive process in writing argumentative rext occured with different process and different reason why they wrote the way it does.

Abstract

This research attempts to improve students’ achievement in reading descriptive text through reciprocal teaching. The instruments for collecting data were multiple choice test as the quantitative data and diary notes, questionnaire sheet, and observation sheet as the qualitative data. In the orientation test the mean scores was 49.17, in the first competence test the mean score was 63.29, and in the second competence test the mean score was 83.69. The improvement also can be seen from the percentage of students’ reading comprehension; in the orientation test 0% (0 students) got 75 points. In the first competence test 21.62% (eight students) got 75 points. It means there was an improvement about 21.62%. In the second competence test 78.37% (twenty nine students) got 75 points. The improvement was 56.75 %. It can be concluded that Reciprocal Teaching could improve students’ reading descriptive text.
