Abstract

Teaching internship program are designed to smooth the transition from students to teachers. And classroom management is one of the important factors that should be mastered by the students’ teachers to control and overcome the problems in the classroom. This study aims at investigating how do the students’ teachers manage the class in their practice teaching internship program. This research utilized descriptive qualitative research. There were ten students’ teachers that involved as participants in this research. The data were collected through (1) self-reflections of the students’ teachers and (2) interview which sought the information about the student teachers’ in managing classroom management. The results of reflective teaching journal with instruments; the document and interview that is identifying based on Danielson’ framework, most of the students’ teachers are succeeded in managing classroom in their practice teaching internship. The result of document, including; in management of instructional groups there are six students teachers they are in distinguished level, in the management of transition there are eight students teachers are at the distinguished level, in management of materials and supplies, all of the students’ teachers are at a distinguished level, In the performance of non-instructional duties the researcher identified, three students teachers in distinguished level. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the students teachers succeeded in managing classroom management.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the grammatical errors and causes of them in writing descriptive text. The study describes the errors that the students made in writing descriptive text based on surface strategy taxonomy (omission, addition, misformation, and misordering). The study used descriptive qualitative method. The population of this research was the second year students of SMAN 1 Mesjid Raya. The class Xl-MIPA 2 was chosen as the sample based on purposive sampling technique. The number of sample was 27 students. The instrument was test where students were asked to write a descriptive text that consists of 30 to70 words in paragraph based on the picture given. The test was conducted on September 19th 2017 taking place at SMAN 1 Mesjid Raya. The result shows there were 75 items of error in the students’ writing. The researcher found that 44% errors of misformation, 25.33% errors of disordering, 20% errors of omission, and 10.67% errors of addition. Based on those findings, it can be concluded that many of the second year students at SMAN 1 Mesjid Raya made grammatical errors in writing descriptive  text. They made errors in misformation, disordering, omission, and addition.The researcher found the highest frequency of errors was misformation and the lowest frequency was addition. The researcher also found the cause of errors 44% of first language, 31% of carelessness and 25% of translation. They made the cause of errors appearing in first language, involve carelessness and translation. Therefore, this study was suggested to give an expository about writing a descriptive text in a proper ways of teaching for teachers. For students, it is expected the students can find their entrance for having a good hand in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

This library research was conducted by finding out experts’ theories and research evidence about how YouTube videos improve students’ listening skill. The findings showed that YouTube enables teachers to create activity attempting an improvement on students’ listening ability as well as helping them identifying vocabulary, contraction, speed, and tempo of speech Mayoral et al. Furthermore, YouTube provides both audio and visual to the learners which gave students an opportunity to figure out the speech or words they heard while learning the subject content as well as to improve their language abilities Oddone. This assists learners to get better description of the language being spoken. Based on the findings, teachers are suggested to provide YouTube videos to familiarize the materials to the language learners. The writer also recommends that future studies investigate the problems and difficulties that may occur in teaching listening through YouTube videos.

Abstract

This research is a library study which aims at analyzing how Dictogloss technique improves students writing ability based on the literature analysis. This research focused on Nunan’s theory with his 4 steps of dictogloss, which are preparation, dictation, reconstruction, analysis and correction. The data were collected using investigation technique of discourses from textbooks, articles, journals, papers and other relevant data sources. This research was re-analyzed the relationship between all data and raw data previously obtained in data collection technique. Such results were reviewed by the author look for similarities or association between one source and another source, as well as to search for strengths and limitations from both sources. The result of the analysis showed that the use of dictogloss technique could improve students writing ability in terms of all aspects of writing based on four steps of dictogloss procedure. The reason is in every step of dictogloss make students work together in a group, and then in the step of dictogloss students can ask a teacher what they do not understand, and also students are involved in a restructure stage and analysis correction stage. It makes students easier in writing English and improves the students writing ability. It can be concluded that this technique can be used to improve students writing ability.

Abstract

This study aims to know the teachers’ strategies in encouraging students’ participation by the English teacher in teaching speaking at SMA Labschool Unsyiah. In this study, the researcher collects data by conducting the observation the strategiesused by the English teacher regarding the learning process that is proposed by Gagne and Briggs (as cited in Yamin, 1997). From the result of classroom observation, it shows that the teacher has the same strategies that encourage the students to participate in teaching and learning process of the class. It is based on the theory stated by Gagne and Briggs namely motivating students to attractthe students’ attention, giving stimulus, giving the guidance of how to learn appropriately for students in conducting activities, encouraging students’ participation in learning process, doing some tests, creating opportunities for practice in using language inside or outside the classroom, and concluding each material that has been taught at the end of learning activity. Meanwhile, the result of interview reveals that the teacher tries to modify some strategies by doing a simple game to attract the students in the class.

Abstract

Elicitation technique is the technique used by teachers to get students to speak in the classroom. This technique provides the teacher to get the students to provide the information rather than only giving it to them. The aim of this study is to find out the types of elicitation technique used by the English teacher in teaching speaking skill at SMA Laboratorium Unsyiah Banda Aceh. A qualitative study was employed as the method of this research. This study was conducted at SMA Laboratorium Unsyiah Banda Aceh. The subject of this study was one English teacher that was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, an observation was conducted by using this instruments: observation sheet and audio recorder. Interview was also done to gain more information from the teacher by using interview guide. The result of this study indicated that the teacher applied all types of elicitation technique proposed by Tsui (1995) namely elicit inform (45.16%), elicit confirm (25.80%), elicit agree (9.67%), elicit commit (6.45%), elicit repeat (6.45%) and elicit clarify (6.45%).

Abstract

As speaking is one of the difficult skills in mastering English, the English teachers should provide a teaching technique to attract students in improving their speaking skill. Therefore, this study is intended to expand the study related to speaking performance, coped with the aspect of fluency, accuracy and content. The writer applied experimental research as the method and one-group pre-test posttest as the design of this study.  The population of this study was second grade students of SMAN 1 Beutong. The number of this population was 100 students which divided into 4 classes and each class had 25 students. The sample was XI IPA 2 class. The technique used to get the sample was simple random sampling. To obtain the data the researcher used pre-test and post-test as the instrument of this study. Furthermore, the writer used statistical parametric to obtain the data from pre-test and post-test. In conclusion, the t-test of post-test is higher than t-table.

Abstract

This research focused on analyzing the use code mixing in the terms of types and most dominant type used by students at SMA N 1 Bandar Baru. The objective of this study is to measure the frequency of code mixing occurrences and the most dominant type that students used. The research methodology used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the students at SMA N 1 Bandar Baru. The subject are selected by using random sampling which the researcher randomly chooses the students from eleven grade. This research used observation in collecting the data. The researcher observed, recorded the data and take notes from the beginning until the end of the class. The data collection was done in three meetings a week and was take 90 minutes in one meeting. The result form observation shows that there were three types of code mixing used by students in in learning process, namely intra sentential code mixing , intra lexical code mixing and involving change of pronunciation. Intra sentential code mixing was the dominant type used by students in learning process, with total 72 utterances which is 61 utterances (85%) included intra sentential code mixing, 7 utterances (10%) included intra lexical and 4 utterances (5%) included Involving change of pronunciation.

Abstract

This study is meant to figure out whether the implementation of Numbered Heads Together can improve students’ speaking ability in terms of descriptve text. The writer conducted an experimental research by using one group pretest-posttest. Total sample of students was 20 students and they were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The instruments used to measure students’ speaking achievement by using oral performance test. There were three meetings for the treatments. The students’ pre-test mean score was 75.40 and posttest 80.70. Each aspect was improved after the treatment, i.e. Vocabulary 16 or (10.0%), fluency 17.6 or (9.50%), pronunciation was17.1 or (4.50%), comprehension 16 or (1.50%), grammar 14 or (1.00%). The writer used 5% (a=0.05) as significant value.  The t-test result, i.e. tvalue (2.34) was higher than ttable  (1.73) suggesting that Ha is accepted. This finding shows that the implementation of Numbered Head Together Technique improved second grade junior high school students’ speaking ability (vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, comprehension, grammar) in terms to describing people, places or things orally. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers who want to develop their students’ speaking ability use this technique.

Abstract

This thesis was conducted to focus on the word formation processes found in Instagram. Words also underwent some processes in their formation. The research method of this study was descriptive qualitative. This study used documentation as  its instruments. The theoretical framework of word-formation processes was promoted by Delahunty and Garvey (2010) and Plag (2003). The data were obtained through document analysis. The writer found that there were 38 words of acronym, 17 words of borrowing, 15 words of abbreviation, five words of blending, two words of coinage, and one word of affixation from the total of 78 data found. It can make the conclusion that the aim of different types of word formation processes assisted people to understand the function of each word formation processes in order to avoid mistake in their writing. Expectantly, it might be useful for other researchers who are interested in word formation processes.
