International Journal of Research on English Teaching and Applied Linguistics (IJRETAL) provides a forum for disseminating information and views which enables practitioners of and researchers in EAP to keep current with developments in their field and to contribute to its continued updating. IJRETAL publishes articles, book reviews, conference reports, and academic exchanges concerning the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and psycholinguistic description of English as it is used for the purposes of academic study and scholarly exchange. A wide range of linguistic, applied linguistic, and educational topics may be treated from the perspective of English for academic purposes; these include: -classroom language, -teaching methodology, -teacher education, -assessment of language, -needs analysis; -materials development and evaluation, -discourse analysis, -acquisition studies in EAP contexts, -research writing and speaking at all academic levels, -the socio-politics of English in academic uses and language planning.

Abstract

In general, teaching and learning activities are mostly supported by books, the presentation of the materials by the teacher, and written or oral exercises. This type of learning method is monotonous. With technological developments and the internet as an educator, it is reasonable to utilize technology-based online learning applications, such as Kahoot. This research aims to find out the students' perceptions using Kahoot game in the vocabulary learning process. The participants of this research are XI Bahasa class students at MAN 1 BONE who have experienced using Kahoot. This qualitative research used questionnaire, interview, and documentation as instruments, purposive sampling technique was used to select participants to get data through interview. The results showed that Kahoot provides many positive impacts on students' learning. It was found that students perceive Kahoot as an online learning platform that increases interest, improves their vocabulary knowledge, and increases their motivation and enthusiasm which leads to active learning through flexible learning process. In addition, this research found difficulties that students experienced when using Kahoot, such as poor internet connection.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the students need in learning English for specific purposes (ESP) of the students in Business Management Study Program. This research employs descriptive and qualitative approach. The questionnaire and interview are the only instrument used in this research. The questionnaire distributed to the student that has an answer which can be directly selected and the interview aims to collect more information related to the questionnaire. The participants of this study are the fourth semester of business management students in the Politeknik Negeri Manado in the academic year 2022-2023. The total of the business management students are 60 students who were or had completed general Basic English. The result indicate that students’ main purpose in learning English are for study/education and students’ needs of language proficiency skill are speaking. The students’ needs of the English sub-skills materials are related to the job vacancy, listening to the movies/songs/drama/role play, present a business plan for the speaking material and chose business letter/ job application letter for writing material. In the other hand, grammar knowledge and vocabulary mastery also needed by the student.

Abstract

Virtual education has exploded in recent years and become even more central to university and school life globally, especially with the advent of Covid-19. With the rise in popularity of virtual meetings, an increasing number of teachers use them to teach English speaking as an alternative to face-to-face instruction. This article examines the attitudes of teachers and the features of virtual meeting platforms that help and hinder the teaching of speaking skills. The study was conducted at several universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, based on a survey of twelve teachers. Seven teachers have recognized virtual meetings for their positive attitudes toward their use in teaching English speaking. Virtual meeting applications raise the most critical concerns regarding limited expression and limited variation. The most popular platforms among teachers are Zoom and Google Meet.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the use of online authentic materials in teaching English at SMPN 2 Tinambung . The study aims to identify the types of online authentic materials used, teachers’ perceptions of their use, and the challenges faced by teachers in using them. Two English teachers were selected using purposive sampling. The results show that teachers used various types of online authentic materials such as YouTube videos, Google pictures, online articles, online news, podcasts, and web short stories. The teachers perceived online authentic materials to be similar to face-to-face authentic materials, but with different media. They were able to adapt the materials based on their needs and purposes. However, they preferred face-to-face meetings due to fewer problems. Challenges in the implementation of online authentic materials included internet connection, classroom management, and language difficulty.

Abstract

This research aims the personal experiences of novice English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in the classroom. The objective is to gain insights into the challenges faced by novice EFL teachers and strategies to address challenges. Descriptive method is employed, focusing on a single participant selected through purposive sampling. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis is used to analyze the interview data. The findings reveal that novice EFL teachers h challenges related to classroom management, lesson planning, and student engagement. Limited teaching experience and a lack of pedagogical knowledge are also identified as contributing factors. However, he demonstrate resilience and engage various strategies to overcome the challenges by seeking mentorship, engaging in professional development, and utilizing student-centered approaches. This research contributes to the existing literature on novice teacher experiences and informs stakeholders to held teacher training programs in the EFL context.

Abstract

The goal of the current study was to provide more information on one-on-one instruction as a learning approach for EFL learners' English speaking difficulties. The study's main interests were the EFL students' perceptions of one-on-one instruction and the speaking skills they acquired from it. This study employed a qualitative research design. Semi-structured interviews, documentation and speaking activity observation were used as data gathering methods. The researcher included EFL students who take speaking-focused courses at an English course in Makassar in the data collection process. There were ten EFL students available for an interview. After gathering the data, the researcher examined the data using three steps of data analysis; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of this study showed that EFL students had difference opinions about one-on-one instruction. One-on-one instruction, according to them, is good, great, effective, efficient, fun, adaptable, and peaceful. Then, there were certain speaking exercises that EFL learners typically pick up along the learning process to hone their speaking skills. These speaking exercises included role plays, retelling movies, describing images, speaking games like dominos and speaking boards, question and answer sessions, telling daily activities, sharing experiences, outlining preferences, and talking about planning.

Abstract

This study discusses reading thematic stories to increase students' vocabulary knowledge. This study used thematic stories as learning media. This study applied a pre-experimental method with a one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research is junior high school students from SMP Negeri 6 Watampone. The sample of this study consisted of 30 grade 7 students. This study used one instrument, namely the multiple-choice test. Data collection was carried out by conducting a pre-test and post-test to measure the development of students' vocabulary knowledge before and after treatment. As a result, it was revealed that there was a significant difference from the pre-test and post-test. The average pre-test score was 29.50 and the post-test average score was 79.83. From T-test the research found that the significant value (significant 2-tailed) value is lower than alpha (α) (0.000,05). It means that reading thematic story can improve students’ vocabulary knowledge.
