Abstract

Technological advancements in the 21st century have rendered humans inseparable from technology. This situation demands that the school sector, notably in Indonesia, adjust to the changes that occur, particularly concerning the Covid-19 outbreak. The government shifted education to remote learning. This study discusses the difficulties encountered by teachers and students during remote learning caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It describes how to overcome these challenges, as well as what needs to be prepared to implement remote learning. It also determines which applications may be used to facilitate remote learning. Interviews and observation were used for data collection. From a teacher and six first-grade students at SD Negeri Pakong 2, it was revealed that challenges experienced by teachers and students were in terms of difficulties in improving student learning outcomes, lack of gadgets, unstable internet connections, as well as unaffordable internet quota. Alternative solutions suggested in this study are conducting IT training, home visits, and proposing internet quota to the government. The recommended applications to overcome these problems are WhatsApp and Google Classroom.

Abstract

This study elucidates the reflective thinking ability as one of the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in thematic learning of grade I students. It also identifies factors affecting students’ reflective thinking ability at MI Al-Islam Kartasura. This study is nested in a qualitative method with a descriptive case study. Involving students of class IA and a class teacher, data collection was carried out using non-test techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicated that students could answer the "why" and "how" questions given by the teacher with various answers. They showed their interest or feelings as well as expressed their opinion on pictures or objects about pictures presented by the teacher. They also enjoy having a simple game. Factors supporting the reflective thinking ability as a part of HOTS  are the availability of media, infrastructure, and learning resources, good delivery of lessons by teachers, and curiosity. The obstacle is that its execution takes a long time and demands a high level of focus in student learning.

Abstract

The flexibility in implementing a curriculum adapting to the learning conditions and needs is one of the efforts undertaken by the Indonesian government to prevent the spread of Covid-19. This curriculum is referred to as the ‘Emergency Curriculum’, which is a simplification of the national curriculum. This current study delineates an overview of the preparation and the lessons taught during the implementation of the emergency curriculum due to the pandemic. This case study was carried out at SDN Wonotingal Semarang in the academic year 2020/2021. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation which validated data triangulation. This study indicates that the implementation of the emergency curriculum was a solution to the education unit's lack of preparedness to tackle the pandemic. The curriculum structure is created by taking into account a range of factors as guidelines in schools. Flexible learning is the answer to the challenges that may arise during an emergency. Life skills education becomes an alternate achievement that students must acquire in the new normal. To sum up, this study offers an alternate perspective on curriculum development and learning during the pandemic, particularly in elementary schools.
