Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential competencies that university students must possess to face the challenges of 21st-century learning. For students of the English Language Education Study Program, critical thinking plays an important role in supporting academic success, decision-making, and the ability to analyze various information and issues objectively. Citizenship Education, as a compulsory course in higher education, has a strategic role in developing critical thinking skills through learning activities that emphasize the analysis of national issues, democracy, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, law enforcement, and social problem-solving. This study aims to analyze the existing literature on the role of Citizenship Education in developing the critical thinking skills of students in the English Language Education Study Program. The method employed in this study is a literature review, involving the collection and analysis of relevant scholarly articles, national and international journals, and other academic sources related to the research topic. The findings indicate that Citizenship Education contributes significantly to the enhancement of students’ critical thinking skills through learning activities that encourage analysis, evaluation, argumentation, reflection, and evidence-based decision-making. Furthermore, the critical thinking skills developed through Citizenship Education support learning processes in the English Language Education Study Program, particularly in understanding, evaluating, and communicating ideas in a logical and systematic manner. Therefore, Citizenship Education plays a significant role in fostering students’ critical thinking skills as an essential competency for academic achievement and active participation in society.

Abstract

Globalization and the digital revolution have propelled English to function as English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), namely a global means of communication that bridges speakers from different linguistic backgrounds. For Indonesia, this phenomenon presents a dilemma: proficiency in English is required to enhance global competitiveness; however, on the other hand, it raises concerns regarding the preservation of national identity, Pancasila values, and the Indonesian language. Previous studies have predominantly focused on linguistic and pedagogical aspects, while the citizenship perspective remains underexplored. This article aims to analyze the relationship between the use of ELF and efforts to maintain Indonesia’s national identity by employing a literature review method based on a descriptive-analytical approach. The sources reviewed include journal articles, books, and academic publications related to ELF, global communication, and national identity. The findings indicate that ELF can generate both positive and negative impacts on national identity; nevertheless, English should not necessarily be perceived as a cultural threat. Two main strategies are proposed: (1) implementing the concept of glocalization, namely positioning English as an instrumental communication tool rather than a lifestyle, while the Indonesian language continues to be upheld as the home of the nation’s cultural and emotional values; and (2) adopting the intelligibility paradigm in English language learning, enabling younger generations to communicate confidently without eliminating local characteristics, including Indonesian accents and distinctive norms of politeness. Therefore, when balanced with a strong foundation of national character, ELF can serve as a strategic instrument for expanding influence while simultaneously promoting the richness of Indonesia’s national identity on the global stage

Abstract

he development of globalization and digital media has had a significant impact on the mindset and character of young generations, including the declining awareness of national integration values. Higher education institutions have a strategic role in reconstructing the values of unity, tolerance, and national identity through critical and reflective learning processes. This study aims to describe the reconstruction of national integration values through the implementation of critical literacy in English language learning at the tertiary education level. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation of the English language learning process. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the critical literacy approach is capable of enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in understanding texts, analyzing social and cultural issues, and connecting global discourses with Indonesian national values. In addition, students demonstrated increased awareness of the importance of tolerance, diversity, unity, and social responsibility in community life. The implementation of critical literacy in English language learning is not only oriented toward the mastery of language competencies but also serves as a means of character development and the strengthening of national integration within higher education environments. Therefore, this approach can serve as an alternative pedagogical strategy in supporting character education and strengthening national insight in the era of globalization.

Abstract

The use of English in learning in the era of globalization provides great benefits, but it can also create challenges to the national identity of the younger generation. This study aims to identify the challenges arising from this phenomenon and the importance of integrating Nusantara values in English learning. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through two weeks of observation in the English Education Study Program, FKIP, Universitas Nusa Cendana, and interviews with one educator and three students. The results show that the dominant use of English can affect the decline of nationalism and students’ interest in local culture. Therefore, English learning needs to be accompanied by the cultivation and integration of Nusantara values so that students can remain globally competent without losing their national identity. Keywords: integration, globalization, values of nusantara, English learning, local culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the patterns of English language utilization and its subsequent implications on national identity awareness among students within the English Education Study Program at Universitas Nusa Cendana. Employing a descriptive quantitative methodology, data were gathered from 11 participants via a structured questionnaire evaluating three core indicators: sociolinguistic dynamics in daily interactions, internal perceptions toward the urgency of English, and the standing of the Indonesian language within academic and national spheres. The empirical evidence reveals a multilingual tendency where students frequently blend Indonesian, English, and Kupang Malay in their informal communication. Interestingly, despite the high intensity of foreign vocabulary usage in digital spaces, their appreciation for Indonesian as a unifying national instrument remains uncompromised. The majority of respondents perceive English strictly as an academic competence rather than a marker of social prestige, maintaining a high level of confidence when utilizing standard Indonesian. Ultimately, this exploration demonstrates that international language proficiency and the preservation of national language quality can coexist simultaneously. This study underscores the critical role of civic education in fostering global competence among the youth while keeping them firmly rooted in their national identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of English language learning on the development of civic character among students in the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Nusa Cendana. The methods used include interviews and observations over a period of two weeks, involving lecturers and students as sources of information. This study shows a positive influence of English language learning on the development of civic character among students. Through the learning process, students not only master the language but also gain insight into various principles of democracy, human rights, and cultural diversity. Collaborative activities in learning, such as discussions and presentations, also contribute to shaping their sense of responsibility and active engagement. Nevertheless, challenges arise from the negative influence of foreign culture, which sometimes threatens national values. Therefore, the development of a critical attitude and the cultivation of strong civic values are needed so that students are able to adapt in the era of globalization without losing their national identity. This study recommends the integration of civic values into the English language learning curriculum to create a younger generation with civic character and a global perspective.

Abstract

This study employed a quantitative research approach using a survey method involving 219 elementary school teachers, selected through proportional random sampling. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to evaluate both the measurement model (outer model) and the structural model (inner model), as well as to examine the direct and indirect relationships among the research variables. The findings indicate that visionary leadership, religiosity, and mutual help each have a positive and significant effect on teachers' creativity. In addition, mutual help significantly mediates the relationships between visionary leadership and teachers' creativity as well as between religiosity and teachers' creativity, demonstrating the important role of collaborative culture in strengthening teachers' creative capacities. Collectively, these variables explain 64% of the variance in teachers' creativity, while the remaining 36% is influenced by other factors beyond the scope of this study. These findings suggest that enhancing teachers' creativity requires an integrated strategy that combines visionary school leadership, the strengthening of teachers' religiosity, and the cultivation of a collaborative school culture grounded in mutual help. Such synergy is expected to promote sustainable educational innovation and improve learning quality in response to the demands of twenty-first-century education.

Abstract

Early childhood cognitive development is a crucial factor in early childhood education (PAUD), especially when the use of the Mystery Box APE is inadequate. One of the main challenges in this context is the innovation and effectiveness of APE in quality learning, which significantly impacts the cognitive development of early childhood. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach to examine the influence of innovation and learning quality. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, modeled after Kurt Lewin, was implemented in several cycles with children aged 4-5 years. Data collection was conducted through observation and documentation of 12 subjects, while data analysis used a percentage achievement formula. The results of the study showed that: (1) the results of observations in cycle I, the number of students whose cognitive development was 2 people (50%); their cognitive development was as expected for 7 people (56.25-68.75); while there were 3 people (78%) whose cognitive development was very good; (2) The results of observations in cycle II, the number of students whose cognitive development was as expected for 2 people (68.7%), while there were 10 people (87.5-100%) whose cognitive development was very good. This finding highlights the importance of using Mystery Box media in efforts to develop early childhood cognitive development. Future interventions should prioritize innovation and creativity in the use of APE to obtain quality learning in PAUD
