Abstract

Peran karakter berubah tetapi strukturnya sama. Pemberontakan tersebut dapat ditelusuri melalui narasi strukturalnya. Kata Kunci: Montag, Pemberontakan, Transformasi, Narasi Struktural, & Aktan. Abstract Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 narrates a story of Montag who rebels against the State while previously he was a fireman who supports the State. The transformation to be a rebel seems to be a change in a story, but the structure is same. In Greimas’ structural narrative, there are actants that take important role in structuring the story. Thus, this research aims to know how the structural narrative is described in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and how Montag’s rebellion is narrated in Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. By using Greimas’ structural narrative analysis, objective approach, documentation as the technique of collecting data, and descriptive interpretation as technique of analysis, this research can expose the result. The result shows that the structural narrative can describe the transformation without changing the structure. The role of the characters changes but the structure is same. The rebellion can be traced from this structural narrative. Keywords: Montag, Rebellion, Transformation, Structural Narrative, & Actants

Abstract

Abstract Protest upon gender disparity in society causes a lot of women to act up. The emergence of feminist critisism via literature media has been a early step for women to reach equality to men. Objectification upon women is a theory in which women are assumed as objects. In the place where the culture of women objectification thrived, women were used as raids in wars. Calogero stated that women merely assumed as main targets of sexual objectification in society for their unique body shape (Calogero, 2012, 574). A few things cause a person in becoming an object can be seen through the indicator of objectification proposed by Nussbaum. It said women are treated in the manners of instrumentality, denial of autonomy, inertness, fungibility, violability, and ownership. While, abjections are acts of assumming something as degradingly filthy. Kristeva stated, in The Power of Horror: An Essay on Abjection, that the concept of abjection is described as the process by which one separates one’s sense of self (be it physical and biological, social or cultural) from that which one considers intolerable and infringes upon one’s self (1982). The twos above becomes the background of the writer to write an essay in the novel Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, which provides aspects upon objectification and abjection on women. The scientific discussion would be ‘how is women’s objectification depicted toward the main character ?’, and ‘how does women’s objectification lead to abjection in the novel?’.

Abstract

Class struggle commonly happens in a society as a form of defense by particular group of people. Usually, they are minority people who have different view or ownership compared to the rests and put an effort to erase inequality they get from society by creating a movement to flip majority’s dominance. This study describes class struggle which is done by some of demigods in the half-blood camp and the effort which is taken by Luke’s party (Kronos’ alliances) and Percy’s party (Olympian defenders) in the novel The Sea of Monsters. Applying Social Class concept of Max Weber in general, this research is also supported by other concepts such as Greek Gods, inequality, and Weberian Stratification in particular. Yet, this study is still covered by sociological criticism as the research methodology. The result shows that class struggle which occurs in the novel is affected by inequality due to humanization and absolute authority of the Gods and Goddesses and Kronos’ whisper to influence the betraying demigods so that they shatter Olympian and help his resurgence to rule the world. However, class struggle movement does not only involve Luke’s party only, but Percy’s party also joins this movement to defense Olympians and mankind.

Abstract

Kata kunci:keakraban, perkembangan psikologisosial, interaksi perorangan, pengungkapan diri, tanggapan yang diterima This study analyzes Esther Greenwood’s intimacy crisis in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. Intimacy isan important aspect performed by Esther which in fact colors her whole life in the novel. The objectives of the study are, firstly to depict Ether’s crisis of intimate relationship dealing with sixth stage of Erikson’s Psychosocial Development, isolation vs. intimacy, and secondly to assess Esther’s struggle to control her crisis and to gain intimacy among society supported by Reis and Shaver’s Interpersonal Model Process of Intimacy. Interpersonal interaction has two key components, self disclosure and perceived partner responsiveness. Self disclosure manifests person’s expression personally and reveals feeling or information to another. The disclosure must interpret perceived partner’s responsiveness as understanding, validating and caring to develop intimacy. This study is a qualitative study. To collect the data, the writer reads the novel comprehensively and collects some related books to find out theory, data and additional information required. The analysis finds out two conclusions, first Esther’s crisis is depicted in the way she fails to behave among society and makes her feeling difficult in building an intimate affiliation with others.Second, based on Esther’s effort in controlling crisis using interpersonal interaction, the result shows that Esther can control her crisis by interacting with a psychiatrist who gives supportive and emphatic respond to her. All in all, the story is Plath’s the one and only prose epic which was considered as the best autobiographical novel ever written. Abstract

Kata kunci: Tipe tindak tutur ilokusi, Fungsi sosial tindak tutur ilokusi, serial Heroes Abstract While watching a movie or television series, people unconsciously observe a social activity of communication between the characters. By analyzing an American film series titled Heroes, the researcher tries to conduct a study about the types of Illocutionary acts with their social functions in the communication through dialogue of the series. In order to identify of the types and subtypes of Illocutionary acts in the dialogue, the theories proposed by Searle in Yule (1996) and Bach & Harnish (1982) are used in this study, while the theory of social function of Illocutionary acts proposed by Leech (1983) is used to identify the social functions of the types of Illocutionary acts. The study also tries to prove that representative act is the most dominant Illocutionary act type in the series with its influence to the story in the series. The first result of the study proves that the five types of Illocutionary acts are found in the script of Heroes series with 6351 findings are identified as the Illocutionary act utterances, while the five types of Illocutionary act found in Heroes series are commissives, declaration, directives, expressives, and representatives. Second, the role of Illocutionary act as social functions in the series is influenced by the style and politeness of the characters that are expressed in the communication between them, while social functions of Illocutionary act that are used by the characters are competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Third, this study also proves that representative act is the most dominant Illocutionary act type in the series since the background of the characters as people with extraordinary abilities has made their characters become more powerful than the others, also the great influence of their belief which representing their ideas in communication such as in asserting, claiming, and informing makes this illocutionary type is frequently expressed in the series. This study was made to discuss the depression experienced by the main character in the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie. Psychoanalysis by Jacques Lacan is a theory that will be used in analyzing this study. The focus of this study is the depression experienced by Charlie due to events in his past that are quite traumatic and greatly influence Charlie's personal and social life. The analysis shows that family behavior and the school environment make shy Charlie a teenage figure who always feels unacceptable and unloved. In this analysis, Jacques Lacan proves in the psychoanalytic theory that he developed, that the outside world contributes a large influence on each stage of a person's life in shaping who he is and how he behaves. Can also be found here in the results of this analysis, if the influence of the outside world on an individual is also able to affect one's mentality.

Abstract

Psychosocial is an important study to be understood and studied by everyone to know oneself as the basis for socializing. This study is also very important for people who have experienced social injustice, like the Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Because the study can help the characters to know themselves to live their new life, their personality development is described through several phases called "The Eight Phases of Man" in Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory. The description of each phase, in theory, shows the importance of the process of developing character identity in social life as a fundamental way to build good social relations with many people and social circles. Based on the results of this study shows that of the eight human phases in Erik Erikson's theory, there are six phases that can be used to explain the personality of the characters. Furthermore, the descriptions reveal that there is one character that stands out the most and dominates the other two out of the three analyzed characters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the gender discrimination in Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s The Witcher (2019). It explains what gender discrimination suffered by the female main character, Yennefer, and what actions did she take to rise from gender discrimination in film. Gender discrimination toward women is still happening in our society, and people still not being aware of this women's oppression issue. Yennefer is suffering gender discrimination toward women in the movie. Because of her gender, Yennefer has only seen her based on her appearance. When she doesn’t meet people’s standards of beauty, she was seen as a creature with no value. This study is a feminist analysis that applies Simone de Beauvoir’s (2010) existentialist feminism theory as well as Timothy Heiderich’s (2012) and Warren Buckland’s (2015) cinematographic language. The findings show that Yennefer is suffering from gender discrimination toward women. She is mistreated because of her appearance. When Yennefer realize that she can rise from the gender discrimination she suffered, she decided to take her chance and freed herself from her condition.
