Abstract

Background: Brain tumors are intracranial neoplasms that affect neurological function and patients' quality of life. Although their incidence is lower than that of lung and breast cancer, brain tumors are progressive and have a high mortality rate. Both benign and malignant tumors can cause serious complications due to limited space within the skull and their proximity to vital functional centers. To date, there has been no research on the characteristics of brain tumor patients in Ambon City. Objectives: This study aims to describe the characteristics of brain tumor patients at Dr. J. Leimena General Hospital from 2021 to 2024 based on age, sex, clinical symptoms, type, and location of the tumor. Method: Quantitative descriptive with a cross-sectional approach, using medical records with total sampling technique. Results: The most common age group was 56-65 years (36.1%), female (63.9%), and the most frequent clinical symptom was headache (32.8%). The most common tumor type was extra-axial (50.8%), and the most frequent tumor location was in the frontal lobe (39.3%). Conclusion: Brain tumor patients are predominantly aged 56-65 years, mostly female, with headache as the most common symptom. The most frequent tumor type was extra-axial, most commonly located in the frontal lobe.

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among postmenopausal women, with central obesity and dyslipidemia identified as key risk factors. Waist circumference is a simple anthropometric measure that may reflect lipid profile changes, particularly in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between waist circumference and LDL levels in postmenopausal women in the working area of Puskesmas Negeri Laha-Tawiri, Ambon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 60 postmenopausal women selected through purposive sampling. Waist circumference was measured using a standardized tape, and LDL levels were assessed through laboratory blood tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between waist circumference and LDL levels (r = 0.42, p = 0.003), indicating that greater abdominal obesity was associated with higher LDL levels. Conclusions: Waist circumference is strongly related to LDL levels among postmenopausal women, suggesting that it can serve as a simple and non-invasive screening tool for early detection of dyslipidemia. Preventive strategies focusing on lifestyle modification are recommended to reduce cardiovascular risk in this population.

Abstract

Background: Major surgery lacks a universally clear definition. The European Surgical Association (ESA) defines it based on factors like patient comorbidities, procedure complexity, and clinical outcomes. Globally, surgery-related one-year mortality is about 5–6%, rising to 14% in frail patients. Laminectomy, laparotomy, and myomectomy is classified as major surgeries, each with significant risks such as bleeding, infection, and readmission. When combined, these surgeries require thorough anaesthesia management to ensure patient safety and surgical success. Objective: The purpose of this study was to give a deep understanding of the case, identify key issues and solutions, and present insight for future action. Methods: Data were collected through direct observation and patient medical records, covering the period from before surgery to three days post-operation. This included medical history, test results, and detailed treatment records. Results: Haemodynamic stability and intraoperative bleeding were well managed and anticipated. Careful repositioning was carried out, partly to maintain airway patency. The patient reported mild postoperative pain and was able to start sitting and walking exercises three days after the surgery. Conclusion: Patients undergoing multiple surgeries require careful monitoring and personalised anaesthetic management. Maintaining physiological stability, proper positioning, and effective fluid and pain control are key to preventing complications.

Abstract

Background: Infants born with cleft lip and palate (CL/P) face severe feeding difficulties. Conventional fabrication of feeding obturators relies on impression techniques that carry procedural risks and cause stress for both infants and parents. Recent advances in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) provide a digital alternative for obturator fabrication. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the clinical and technical outcomes of digital workflows compared to conventional techniques in fabricating neonatal feeding obturators. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria and were qualitatively synthesized. Results: Findings consistently demonstrated that digital workflows using intraoral scanning (IOS) and 3D printing provide significantly higher accuracy, better fit, and improved retention of feeding obturators. Moreover, digital fabrication markedly reduces physical and psychological stress for infants and parents. Clinicians also reported greater efficiency and safety with digital methods compared to conventional impression-based approaches. Conclusion: The digital workflow represents a safer, more efficient, and more accurate approach for fabricating feeding obturators in infants with CL/P. Wider adoption of this technique may support a paradigm shift in clinical practice, although further high-quality trials are needed to confirm long-term clinical and economic benefits.

Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health burden with high morbidity and mortality. Anemia is a common complication that worsens quality of life, increases cardiovascular risk, and reduces survival. Roxadustat, an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI), represents a novel therapy by stimulating endogenous erythropoietin, lowering hepcidin, and improving iron metabolism. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of roxadustat in managing anemia among CKD patients. Methods: A literature review was performed through PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. Six studies, including randomized controlled trials, retrospective cohorts, and real-world registry data, were analyzed. Results: Roxadustat consistently increased hemoglobin and maintained it within therapeutic targets in both dialysis and non-dialysis patients. It improved iron utilization, reduced intravenous iron needs, and showed favorable lipid effects. The safety profile was generally comparable to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, with no significant increase in cardiovascular or infectious adverse events. Conclusion: Evidence indicates that roxadustat is an effective, safe, and practical treatment for anemia in CKD. Its ability to optimize hemoglobin control, enhance iron metabolism, and maintain safety supports its potential as an alternative to conventional therapy.
