Abstract

This research examines TV advertisements for beauty products on local TV from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. This research mainly focuses on the use of language in beauty advertisements and the strategies used by advertisers to manipulate and influence their customers. This analysis is based on Fairclough's three-dimensional framework, which shows how the ideology of “beauty” is produced and reproduced through advertisements on TV. Qualitative research was conducted on beauty product advertisements from ten TV advertisements for beauty products in 2019. The advertisements taken and analyzed were advertisements for facial beauty products from various brands and types. The findings suggest that advertisers use a variety of strategies to manipulate women. Advertising language is used to control people's thoughts. The better the words the advertisers used to manipulate the viewers, the better reaction that they will get from the viewers. This research shows advertisers are not only promoting their products but highlighting society's standards of beauty and cultural values into the viewers’ lifestyle and how the TV advertisements have shaped the beauty ideology of social practice in Indonesia.

Abstract

The field of beauty every day has rapid changes, so it has many new terms growing in it. The webtoon has now expanded and has several titles translated into various languages, including Indonesian. Not only as entertainment but webtoon also indirectly brings beauty terms that do not yet have their equivalents in Indonesian. This research aims to determine how beauty terms in the webtoon are translated from English to Indonesian. This research uses a qualitative method. The source of data used is 50 chapters from two webtoons entitled The Secret of Angel (2018) and Make-Up Man (2019) in the English version and their translation in Indonesian. The results in this research indicate that based on the translation strategy theory, the translators for both of the webtoon used four different translation strategies namely: loan, unit shift, distribution change, and calque. The implication of this research is that in translating the English beauty terms into Indonesian webtoon translators often employed loan strategy by borrowing or retaining the ST items in the TT. The reasons why the translators often employ the borrowing strategy are due to the limited space in the webtoon and also because the target readers are more familiar with the original English beauty terms.

Abstract

Learning vocabulary is vital to language proficiency and skills. However, for the ESL learner, vocabulary learning can be challenging due to poor memory and the distinct nature of vocabulary itself. Many studies have looked into vocabulary learning strategies and most have concurred that they should be fun, interactive and meaningful especially for the young ESL learners to recall and use. This paper investigates the effectiveness of video project assignments (VPA) on young learner’s vocabulary learning in an ESL reading class. The activity utilizes a combination of project-based learning and multimodal learning platforms like Web 2.0 (Google, YouTube and Padlet). A group of primary five students (N=30) from a public school in Malaysia are examined. The students were exposed to vocabulary items in reading passages on Malaysian culture and asked to discuss them on Padlet. A group video project assignment was also developed and uploaded on Youtube. In this paper, we discuss the quantitative and qualitative findings that show the effectiveness of using multi-modal learning platforms and developing simple, pocket-sized VPAs in enhancing young ESL learners’ vocabulary learning.
