Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the dialogic teaching approach in enhancing the emotional well-being and reducing the speaking anxiety of EFL university learners of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). To achieve the objectives of this study, the study was conducted on two groups of undergraduate students from the Department of Management Technique at the High School of Technology in Meknes, Morocco. To collect data, a quasi-experimental research design was adopted, combining a non-equivalent group design with a pretest and a posttest design. To analyze data, SPSS was used to employ two tests. A t-test for within-group comparisons before and after the intervention, and an independent sample test for between-group comparisons pre- and post-intervention. Drawing on the findings, the dialogic approach was successful in enhancing ESP learners’ speaking skills, reducing their speaking anxiety, and improving their emotional well-being, in contrast to the control group, which continued with traditional lectures and did not receive any intervention. Hence, the study implies that developing students’ public speaking skills and using interactive teaching methods becomes a requirement to alleviate students’ speaking anxiety while increasing students’ emotional well-being

In this case, the researchers become complete observers (lurking) in the cross-sectional study design. A total of 528 posts were collected manually during the campaign period. All content, which included text, images, videos, and emojis, was observed and noted. Then, the data were analyzed by speech act theory. The findings highlighted the power of the multimodal elements presented in the posts as the locutionary acts to strengthen the message impact and to increase credibility, specifically in attacking the opponents. The analysis of illocutionary acts revealed that the buzzers’ domination in assertive, directive, expressive, and the combination of speech acts. The perlocutionary effect of the posts was reflected in the audience engagement through likes and retweets. Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of corruption and the use of Arabic terms in four online news articles published by Kompas.com and Detik.com in May–June 2017. The case involved a member of the House of Representatives from the PKS faction, Yudi Widiana Adia, who was suspected of using Arabic terms as code in communications related to bribery surrounding road construction projects in Maluku and North Maluku. Adopting a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study focuses on the transitivity system within the ideational metafunction to analyze how each media outlet linguistically constructs the same corruption incident. The findings indicate that Kompas tends to represent corruption through material processes that position the actors as the agents of the action, whereas Detik more frequently employs verbal processes that position the source as the primary speaker. This difference also influences how Arabic terms are represented in the context of corruption. These consistent linguistic patterns indicate a difference in editorial orientation between the two media outlets in their coverage of the same corruption case, although broader generalizations require a more extensive corpus analysis.
