Abstract

Traditions and mantras are essential elements in people's culture and life. This study focuses on mantras in the Erau tradition in Kutai Kartanegara Kingdom. Erau is one of Indonesia's cultural traditions, which is carried out annually with an activity center in Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. In the Erau tradition, the mantras is vital in regulating society and determining social relations between citizens. It also acts as a source of inspiration and motivation for people to carry out their daily lives. This research was conducted to understand more about these mantras and how they are used in the context of the Erau tradition. This study also aims to discover the meanings of each mantra in the Erau tradition and how these mantras play a role in people's daily lives. The result of this study is that mantras is used as a local communication tool in the form of language, which has an essential role in seeding messages and culture. The characteristics of the mantra used are spoken language and the mention of all the supernatural beings believed to be the rulers of the supernatural realm. The meaning of the mantra is intended to seek permission from the rulers of the supernatural realm to hold the Erau event, to ensure the smooth conduct of the Kutai Kartanegara Erau activities, and to empower the king who leads his people simultaneously. The results of this study can be used as a reference in future studies on other traditions and mantras in different regions.

Abstract

Understanding the language use strategies in political debates helps candidates craft their communication strategies strategically. Candidates need to resonate with voters, address their concerns, and effectively communicate their vision for the nation through their language and communication style. The objective of the study is to provide a comprehensive description of the strategies of language use in the Indonesian vice presidential candidates debate in the 2024 election to construct their identities, to frame issues in a particular way, to manipulate information to gain an advantage over their opponents, to establish authority and credibility, to persuade voters, and to present themselves in a certain light. It used content analysis to understand the main issues addressed and the candidates' stances on the issues. The data were collected by transcribing spoken content from video and audio recordings and then analyzed using thematic analysis, consisting of familiarization, generating themes, review, refinement, and defining and naming themes. The results showed that all three candidates aimed to project an image of trustworthiness and competence, but each used different techniques to achieve it. Muhaimin Iskandar focused on experience and continuity, Gibran on pragmatism and youth appeal, and Mahfud on intellectual authority and good governance. The choice of language was crucial to their strategies. Muhaimin Iskandar's populism resonated with rural voters, while Gibran's modern vocabulary appealed to the urban youth. Mahfud's academic tone established him as a knowledgeable figure.

Abstract

Even though the Independent Curriculum suggests teachers conduct speaking activities in class, the real situation is quite the opposite. Students rarely speak English in class; hence, students still lack the ability to speak English. This study aims to describe the challenges in implementing the Information Gap Technique to enhance students' speaking skills in a vocational high school located in Sleman. Employing Classroom Action Research, the research unfolds across four iterative stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. This study used interviews, observations, and documentation as primary instruments. This is qualitative analysis with interactive model analysis and thematic analysis as data analysis. The findings illuminate several hurdles faced by both teachers and students. Teachers confront difficulties in classroom management, struggling to monitor and assess students simultaneously. Meanwhile, students encounter challenges in peer assessment and formulating questions, along with linguistic obstacles in pronunciation and grammar. The study concludes that an effective strategy to mitigate these challenges involves teachers actively circulating the classroom and engaging in peer assessment. This approach enables teachers to identify and address individual student difficulties promptly. The research suggests that while IGT proves effective in enhancing speaking skills and boosting confidence, teachers should judiciously incorporate it, considering both its advantages and drawbacks. The recommendation encourages periodic utilisation of the technique, with teachers being mindful of the need for a balanced approach that addresses the identified challenges, thereby maximising the benefits of IGT in enhancing students' speaking abilities.

Abstract

A thesis defense examination (TDE) involves the ability to defend the research and to orally explain the thesis. However, it is not easy to do them in front of the examiners. The purposes of this qualitative study are to identify the speaking challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in their TDE and to describe the strategies they employed to deal with encountered challenges. To achieve the purposes, guided by an interview protocol, a semi-structured interview was conducted to elicit the experiences of five EFL students in their thesis defense. Through thematic analysis, we identified two main themes of EFL students’ speaking challenges in TDE, including internal challenges (low self-confidence, limited vocabulary and lack of pronunciation) and external challenges (serious examiners and unpredictable questions). In order to deal with the speaking challenges, the participants employed Self management strategies (taking a deep breath, mixing languages and looking at notes) and confirmation strategies (asking for clarification and asking for repeating questions).

Abstract

Investigating the linguistic system of a regional language offers significant advantages from both the linguistic and cultural conservation perspectives. By examining a language's linguistic system, researchers can identify specific patterns employing subjects, verbs, objects, and other sentence elements while also documenting and preserving the language. Analyzing the syntax of the Limola language can provide new insights into general syntactic theory. The purpose of this study was to describe the syntactic functions, categories, and roles of Limola using a syntactic typology approach, clearly illustrating its syntactic functions, categories, and roles. The data for this study comprised phrases, clauses, and sentences in the Limola language, collected through instruments completed by sources and informants from two villages: Sassa and Makumpa. Data collection methods involved observation (survey), elicitation, and documentation. In drawing conclusions and discussions, triangulation presents the findings based on relevant theories. The results indicate that the syntactic categories in Limola are divided into five main categories: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and numerals, as well as two categories of function words, namely prepositions/conjunctions and pronouns. Each category plays a vital role in shaping Limola`s meaning and sentence structure.

Abstract

Phonological proficiency is crucial for language growth in current English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. The research aims to identify and analyze the proficiency of allophonic variations in students' phonetics using the advanced language learning tool ELSA Speak. It provides insights into their phonological development. This study employs a pre-experimental design methodology. A cohort of 31 EFL students from Mulawarman University participated in structured phonetic exercises using the ELSA Speak app around the beginning of the semester. Data was collected using pre-and post-tests, recording students' phonetic outputs, and entering detailed records of their engagement with the ELSA Speak app. The pre-experiment design enabled the evaluation of improvements in identifying allophonic variance and phonological competence before and after the intervention. The findings demonstrate a significant improvement in students' ability to detect and produce different variations of sounds, especially concerning allophones. The ELSA Speak app succeeded by offering immediate feedback, facilitating a more advanced understanding of phonetic distinctions. Based on the data, students demonstrated increased confidence and precision in their pronunciation, reassuring the students about the positive impact of the study. Additionally, they made significant progress in differentiating between challenging allophones for Indonesian and English. This study has highlighted the effective use of the ELSA Speak app in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting, establishing its value as a beneficial tool for teaching pronunciation. The empirical data on the effectiveness of digital tools in improving the phonological competence of EFL students in the early stages of the semester can inspire and motivate educators, researchers, and professionals in English language education and linguistics to integrate such tools into their teaching practices.

Abstract

Self-reflection is an integral element of teacher professional development and a viable means for sharpening teacher knowledge and skills for subsequent pedagogic applications and improving student learning outcomes. While self-reflection is an individual professional endeavor, it is obviously tied to the professional contexts. As such, the notion of self-reflection is inherently tied to improving teachers` professional agency. However, there is potential for frustration in the enactment of teacher agency if practitioners are not cautious of the contextual constraints within which they have to exercise their agency. For example, changes that require enactment may have wider implications for institutions of employment, institutional policies of assessment and teaching, colleagues, and stakeholders. This paper aims to get an in-depth description of a teacher`s reflection on her professional practice as an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teacher at the university level. This study adopted a qualitative case study as the research design and collected data using a semi-structured interview with an English teacher for specific purposes in the tertiary sector in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The findings of this single case study chartered the frustrations experienced by English teachers in enacting agency for specific purposes in Indonesian tertiary education. These are discussed in relation to the implications they have for teacher agency, professional development, English for Specific Purposes classroom practice, and future research.

Abstract

Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) are crucial in today`s fast-paced world of healthcare education. Healthcare professionals frequently encounter complex, unpredictable situations. HOTS enables them to assess patient conditions, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively. These skills need to be taught to students of healthcare education. One of the ways is through the provision of HOTS-based learning materials in teaching English for specific purposes. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the students` need for English in relation to their future careers as paramedics. This study explores the needs of DIII Midwifery Study Program students at the Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health in Palembang. Using a mixed-method approach incorporating both quantitative and qualitative, the research data were gathered using surveys for collecting quantitative data and semi-structured interviews for collecting qualitative data. The data was examined utilizing the Target Situation Analysis, Deficiency Analysis, Present Situation Analysis, and Strategy Analysis criteria for requirements analysis put forward by Hutchinson and Waters (1987). The study revealed that students of the Midwifery Program had a high interest in learning English, especially HOTS-based English reading materials. Additionally, the lecturer of English was also in need of a specific source of English material related to midwifery to support students learning English for specific purposes, as such material was not available in her teaching context.

Abstract

This article deals with the arrangement of discourse, namely cohesive devices and structure of text in narrative text writing. The students` perspective is also discussed in the indicated investigation. The objectives are to capture the pupils `point of view in arranging discourse units and constructing text structure in writing. The data were taken from fourth-semester students` narrative text writing at UIN SATU Tulungagung, and interview results were analyzed. There are twelve texts analyzed in this study. This study was conducted using a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The findings show that there are misuses in applying linguistics tending to unite instruments, including allusion, replacement, and omission of parts of a word or sentence, as well as combination. Then, some lexical cohesive devices are easier to understand than grammatical ones, especially repetition, hyponyms, and meronyms. However, students are confused about using synonyms and antonyms collectively. The implementation of narrative text structure was also achieved. In addition, from students` point of view, the elements of cohesive devices need to be studied further as a lack of understanding of the devices affects their writing skills.
