Abstract

Abortion or pregnancy termination is a difficult choice some women have to make when they become pregnant out-of-wedlock. This situation is usually faced by young women who are not yet ready to get married or to take care of their children due to several conditions, such as the fact that they are still in school, their partners are unemployed, or are still depending on their own parents. The psychological effects of abortion include feelings of loss and grief, but it’s often difficult for these women to express their feelings of grief. Many times, they also experiencing lack of sympathy and support from the people closest to them. This condition is called disenfranchised grief This qualitative study aims to provide a description of disenfranchised grief and its affecting factors. The research involved two subjects who were interviewed using a general interview guideline. Subjects characteristics are: having an induced abortion within the past year, and said abortion was not done due to a medical condition. The first subject hadtwo abortions. Both subjects had their abortions at medical clinics and/or hospitals with medical assistance. During the abortion procedure, they were accompanied by their parents and boyfriends. Both subjects were found to experience disenfranchised grief. They have shown symptoms such as feeling ashamed and worthless, guilt, anger, selfdisenfranchisement, having destructive behavior such as getting drunk, promiscuous sexual behavior, repeated abortions and conflicts with people associated with the abortion. Family, boyfriends and friends, as well as personality traits/characteristics were found to be factors that influence disenfranchised grief, both in a positive or a negative way. Religious and cultural rituals were found to be factors that help easing grief. Further research should focus on disenfranchised grief in parents and partners, as well as further exploration of factors affecting similar phenomenon.

Abstract

Inconsistent effects of the relationship between motive for environment concern and the green environment behavior occurred since motive for environment concerns are preserved as an unidimensional construct. This research uses a multidimensional approach on motive for environment concern in order to examine the relationship between each dimension of the motive with the green environment behavior. Those dimensions include egoistic, altruistic, and biospheric dimensions. Using environmental motives scale and ecological conscious consumer behavior scale, 276 college students were participating in the study. The results shown that each dimension of the motives correlates significantly with the green environment behavior. Furthermore, biospheric motive contributes the largest part to such behavior. This research has a meaningful practical implication to the green environment campaign. The campaign needs to address the specific reason behind the environment concern motive, so that it will be more effective reaching the goal of green consumers.

Abstract

School bullying is a serious problem in Indonesia and need the attention of scholars from different knowledge background to find the solution. It involves aggressive behavior which is considered as normal among young people. Their behaviour is highly influenced by the school condition and their peer group developed at the early childhood in the family. The types of attachment with parents may result in a certain child behavior, as children learn from what their parents do at home. There are three types of attachment styles. i.e. secure, avoidance, and ambivalence attachment styles. This research attempts toexamine the relationship between childhood attachment style and the tendency of aggression from the bully’s perspective. Using quantitative approach, the study population was students considered as bullies in Jakarta high schools. Sample taken from two selected schools known as having problems with bullying in Jakarta. The sampling technique was stratified random sampling. The study used the adapted Attachment Styles Questionnaire to measure the attachment style of students, and The Tendency of Aggression for School Aged Children Questionnaire. The total respondents were 53 students ranged between 15 to 18 years old. One interesting finding is the fact that most respondents were female (n=35, 66%). This is different from our previous assumption that bullies commonly are males. It might be true as the indicators of bullying which were reported mostly were verbal. Another finding is that 43 respondents had secure attachment style, and there was no relationship between such attachment style with the tendency of aggression (r = 0,151; p > .05). Due to the small number on the other two groups, the research was unable to do the analysis. Future study needs to be done with these two groups, as it is likely that non-secure attachment styles relate to the aggression behaviour.

Abstract

An overview on the topic of sleep is presented. Two assumed functions of sleep are highlighted: the restorative hypothesis, implying that (deep) sleep is involved in body restoration, and the information processing hypothesis, saying that sleep plays a role in memory consolidation. The structure of sleep, with its three main characteristics (deep sleep occurring in the first part of the night and light sleep in the second part, while REM sleep appears in cyclical phases during the entire bedtime) is described. Detailed information is provided for REM sleep, given its strict relationship with dreaming, a still enigmatic process. It is emphasized that sleep is a circadian rhythm, coupled to the light-dark and the body temperature cycles. The length of the nightly sleep in relation to healthiness is discussed, as well as the cognitive capabilities of a sleeping brain. Poor sleep and sleep disorders are frequently occurring phenomena whereas the cause of psychophysiological insomnia is also indicated. Snoring and the relation with sleeping postures pass in review, as well the disorder of sleep apnoea. A description isgiven of CPAP, an efficient treatment for sleep apnoea. This sleep review is closed by the sickness narcolepsy, whereby (REM) sleep irresistible intrudes in waking life.

Abstract

It has been considered that social psychology, particularly the field of prejudice, needs to take part in understanding the social movement and social turmoil in Papua. The goals of this research were to: 1) discover the perceptual themes of the people living in Western Indonesia, about the Papua people (social representation survey), 2) construct scale of measurement of prejudice toward the Papua people (reliability test), 3) examine the relation between two variables which are the worldview and the prejudice toward the Papua people. The participants of this research were 100 students of the University of Indonesia. They were 48% men and the rest were females. Using the reliability proven scale of measurement (α > 0,7 ) it was showed that competitive view of world—that is a description that living in this world is the same as living in the jungle—was one of the determinant factors of prejudice toward the Papua people (γ = 0,49; t > 1,95, in the structural model, where χ2 = 71,48; p > 0,05; RMSEA < 0,05). This finding is not very much different from the social perception of the people living in Western Indonesia about the Papua people. They perceived the Papua people are primitive, having low level of thinking ability, and lack of civilization. This undervalued social perception is typicallyheld by those with competitive view of the world. It is suggested that acquaintanceship and assembly programs will reduce the level of prejudice and will put the Papua people equal with the Indonesians regarding the capability.
