Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the problem faced by the fourth semester students of UKI TORAJA in speaking English. This research used qualitative method. The population of this research is the fourth semester students of English Department of UKI Toraja. The writer used purposive sampling to choose the participant. The writer chose 10 of students as a participant. To collect the data, the writer used observation and interview. The writer used semi structure interview. The result of the data analysis collected through observation and interview showed that the fourth semester students of English department of UKI Toraja have problems in speaking when they want to speak in English. They are fear of make mistake, fear of being criticized, shyness, nothing to say, low or uneven participant, anxiety, poor in pronunciation, poor in grammar, difficulty in verbal expression, lack of motivation and interference of mother tongue.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the picture word inductive model is effective in teaching vocabulary to the eight grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN. The researcher applied quantitative experimental used pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN academic 2018/2019. The researcher used cluster sampling in choosing class VIII A consists 19 students. The data collected through written test, and then it is analyzed in percentage in work sheet. The result of data analysis through written test showed that the mean score of pre-test was 53,73 falls into poor score, and the mean score of post-test was 75,15. It means that the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. The result of t-test and t-table showed that there was significant improvement of Students vocabulary after treated by picture word inductive model. It was found that the score of t-test was 12,98 and score of t-table that used in this research was 1,734 It means that the hypothesis Hi is accepted because t-test is higher than t-table (12,98?1,734) Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that used of picture word inductive model to the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 BUNTU PEPASAN is effective.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the problem faced by the fourth semester Educators at the university, high school and academy levels have the obligation to carry out the tri-services of tertiary institutions, namely (1) education and teaching, (2) research in the context of developing science and (3) carrying out community service based on the field of science and technology in accordance his/her discipline. Likewise, lecturers in the English Language Study Program, have the competence to carry out "Community Service" in the form of teaching English, both in the form of courses, seminars, workshops, therefore, the English language lecturer of Toraja Indonesian Christian University has implemented the "Community Service" program "Through collaboration with the Government of the Tana Regency Education Office through the Educational Achievement Reward / Incentives program with English Language Teaching activities to the people who live in around 15 Tana Toraja tourism objects, namely Tongkonan Mebali, Sassa ', Potok Tengan, Pango-Pango, Sasana Makale culture, Papa Batu Tumakke, Talando Tallu, Suaya, Tampanggallo, Kambira, Makula ', Lemo, Buntu Burake, Tumbang Datu, and Tilangnga'. The outcomes of this study are (1) actualizing the Tana Toraja district government program "English Speaking Area" launched by Mr. Ir. Nico Biring Kanae, regent of Tana Toraja in 2016 (2) Improved the ability of English communication for the people of Tana Toraja, and (3) produced a prototype of a British village in Tana Toraja.

Abstract

This research is aimed to know the Influence of Internal and External Motivation cadets’ English Learning towards TOEFL Ability. This research forms used the descriptive method that the data taken from several interview and questioning and then in order to transcription form. From the results of the research, there is a significant influence English learning motivation towards TOEFL ability D.III Aeronautical Information Service cadets of Civil Aviation Safety and Engineering Academy Makassar.

Abstract

English has four skills. one of the them is reading skills. As students, they must face reading in daily life, like in teaching and learning process. In teaching and learning process, the teacher asks the students to read and to do the tasks based on the reading text. For that, the students must have good ability to do the tasks. The fact, some students found difficulties in reading. That’s why, the researcher tried to find a strategy to overcome this problem. One of the strategies that the researcher though can solve this problem is applying the Number Head Together in teaching reading. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of Numbered Head Together strategy can improve the students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research is quasi experimental design. The population of this research is all the students of year ninth of SMP Negeri 2 Pangsid. It consists of six classes and 138 students. The researcher chooses two classes randomly or 46 students as the sample of this research. The result showed that Using Numbered Heads Together Strategy can improve literal comprehension dominantly. The implication of this research refers to all English teachers to use this strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The researcher also suggests to the further researcher to do research on other objectives to support the results of this research.

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of drill technique on student’s English pronunciation. The study employed Quasi-experimental design. The population consists of 39 students and the sample were 20 students taken from the grade-8 students of SMPN 23 Makassar. The data was collected by administering filling the blank oral test with consisting of 30 words/sentences. The result of this research shows that of T-test is higher than T- table (4.634 ? 2.093). The result indicates that the alternative hypothesis(H1) is accepted and of course the null hypothesis (H?) is rejected, it shows that using drill technique has affected on students’ English pronunciation used the reading text as teaching tools of oral test in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of authentic materials on EFL student’s vocabulary achievements. The study employed Quasi-experimental design. The population consists of 90 students and the sample are 20 students taken from the fourth semester the department of English Education Bosowa University. The data were collected by administering a filling in the blank test with consisting of 40 questions using inferential statistics. The p-Value of posttest is lower than ? (0,00<0,05) The result indicates that the alternative hypothesis(H1) is accepted and of course the null hypothesis (H?) is rejected, it shows that using authentic materials has effect on EFL students’ vocabulary achievements used article of The Jakarta post Newspaper as teaching tools in the classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the effectiveness media of word card by looking picture in improving students' understanding in learning Present Continuous Tense at SMPN 3 Rantepao Satap. In analyzing the data of this research, the writer employed quantitative method. The subjects of this study were 21 students of SMPN 3 Rantepao Satap. Research data were collected by providing teaching and testing. The data collected was obtained in obtained three steps namely pre-test, treatment and post-test and the analyzed using SPSS program. The results of this study prove a fact in teaching the Present Continuous Tense in grade 8 of SMPN 3 Rantepao Satap. It can be seen from the scores obtained from the pre-test and post-test. The results of the data analysis in this study showed that the t-test value was higher than the t-table with a significance level of 0.05% (0.05), namely (18.283 > 1.725). it can also be seen from the significance of the paired sample t-test, which is 0.001 smaller than 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05).

Abstract

Background of this research is students’ motivation still low in learning English, it is caused by method which is not interested in teaching and learning process. The aim of this research is to know the effect of Teaching Method through Group Work to Improve Vocabulary of the Students SMP Wahyu Makassar. This research used classroom action research (CAR) method. The populations are class VII of SMP Wahyu Makassar that consist of 5 classes. Every class consist of 20 students, meanwhile the population are 170 students. The sample of this research are 20 students of class VII-D (only one class). The instrument that uses in this research is test (multiple choices). The data analysis result show that there is significant difference of the student’s vocabulary mastery after taught using group work method. It shows at significant statistic level data analysis result. Based on the analysis result, the writer concluded that the use of group work method can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and students have very high motivation in learning English by using group work method.

Abstract

This research aimed to detect whether REDW strategy has effect to the students’ reading comprehension at the third grade of SMPN 2 Campalagian. The method which used in this research was pre-experiment with one class pre-test and post-test design at the third grade of SMPN 2 Campalagian. The sample were 29 students from the total population 174 students. The result of the research and discussion that obtained by the writer at SMPN 2 Campalagian that there was effect of using REDW strategy on students’ reading comprehension after comparing the result of pre-test and post-test by getting improvement 63%. The writer was able to apply Read, Examine, Decide, write strategy to make the teaching process effective and it also helped students improve their reading comprehension.
