Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the way students’ writing ability of the third-year students improved by using Wholesome Scattering Game of SMP Negeri 35 Makassar. The study employed Experiment Class. Where the subject consisted of 30 students who taken from class IX-1 of the third-year students of SMP Negeri 35 Makassar. The instrument of this research was writing test. The data were collected in pre-test and post-Test. The result indicates that the mean score in pre-test of experiment class was 55 and posttest was 85,83 It shows that used of Wholesome Scattering Game as a medium has effect on students’ writing paragraph at SMP Negeri 35 Makassar

Abstract

This research is aimed to know the reading ability of Senior Air Traffic Control Cadets through ICAO English Language Proficiency Test. This research applied descriptive study. The population of the research was 87 cadets of D.III SATC CASEA Makassar which are divided into 4 classes, they are D.III SATC VI, D.III SATC VII, D.III SATC VIII A dan D.III SATC VIII B. The sample of the research took through their registration number consists of 24 cadets. They are cadets of D.III SATC VIII B. Procedure of collecting data that the researcher has applied was gave the reading test to cadets, and each cadet should answer the questions that given. The result of the research shows that the senior air traffic control cadets still have low ability in reading

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to know the use of scrabble game can reinforce EFL Young Learners vocabulary. The writer was applied pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test. This research was conducted at SMPN 35 Makassar sub-district of Biringkanaya, Makassar city. In this research, the population was the seven grade students of SMPN 35 Makassar. The total numbers of population were 240 students. The researcher was used total sampling technique. The total number of samples was 30 students from class VII-1. In analyzing the numerical data, the writer used SPSS for windows. After conducted the research, the writer concludes that the use of Scramble Game in teaching English vocabulary enriches the students’ vocabulary; it is proved by the mean score of the students in pre-test and posttest. The mean score of the pre-test before the treatment was 57.40 and after the treatment the students gained score 74.67. The t-test of the students’ vocabulary achievement in posttest was smaller than ?. The researcher found that the p-value (probability value) was lower than ? (0.00 < 0.05) and the degree of freedom was 29. The t-test value of pre-test and post-test was remarked significantly different. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and, of course, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.o learn autonomously and it is compulsory subject from the school.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether using imaginative text can improve students’ reading achievement in comprehending reading imaginative text or not. In order to achieve the objective of the research, the writer designed an experimental research by using pre-test, treatment and post-test. The population of this study was the eighth grade students at SMP Kristen Sa’dan. Toraja Utara. The population of this study consists of 75 students. The sample of the study was the eighth grade students class B. The number of the students was 25. They took it by using cluster sampling. There were four four meetings. Before the treatment the students were given a pre-test. and after , the students were given a post-test. The result of this research revealed that the post test was higher than pre-test. It could be seen by comparing their mean score. The mean score of the pre-test was 51,4 categorized poor and the mean score of the post-test was 66,6 categorized good. It can be concluded that the eighth grade students of SMP Kristen Sa’dan have good comprehension, after learning to read imaginative texts. Using imaginative text in teaching reading can help the students to improve their comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the level of self-efficacy in speaking by the fourth semester students of the English Department at UKI Toraja. This research applied quantitative and qualitative methods. The subjects of this research were the students of the English Department of UKI Toraja. The data was collected by applying distribution questionnaires and voice recording. The obtained data qualitative data was analyzed in four major phases; data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion. The result of the research showed that the fourth semester students of the English Department have high and moderate self-Efficacy. Based on the data From the questionnaire students have high self-efficacy and the data from the interview students have high and moderate self-efficacy.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the guiding questions technique is effectively used in writing descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Rantepao. This research used cluster sampling, the population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Rantepao academic year 2018/2019. It consisted of 360 students. Because the population was quite large, the writer chose one class that consists of 30 students as a sample. The data were collected through a written test as the instrument. To analyze the data the researcher used SPSS 21. The result of this research shows that the Guiding Question Technique effectively used in Writing Descriptive Text at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Rantepao” It can be proved by the value of t-test and t-table. Based on the finding, the value of t-test is higher than t-table (16.155>2.04523), which means that an alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that Guiding Question Technique effective used in Writing Descriptive Text at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Rantepao”

Abstract

The objectives of the research is to find out the social values implied in garonto’ passura’. In analyzing the data of this research, the research employed qualitative method, semiotic approach of Pierce triadic theory. The subjects of this research were engrever of Toraja traditional house, Toraja traditional guide, Toraja cultural observer and Toraja cultural activist. The data of this research were collected by observation, interview and documents analysis. The obtained data were analyzed data transcript, reduction, classified, transcribed. The results of this research from garonto’ passura’ is a prayer and aspiration of the owner of Tongkonan for the present and future. Moreover, the carving pattern found on tongkonan symbolizes social status Toraja peope based on the results of research and discussion, conclusions can be drawn that the engraving depict symbols of objects and creatures in Toraja people’s life. The message implied in the tongkonan engraving is a philosophy Toraja people’s life itself.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the language attitudes of the English Department students towards English. The research method applied in this research is quantitative method. The subjects of this research were students of the English Department at UKI Toraja from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 academic years. Data collection was carried out through distributing questionnaires consisting of 12 statements. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using a Likert scale calculation used to measure these aspects which consisted of 5 (five) scales. The results of this research found that there were two main categories of students’ language attitudes, namely positive and negative attitudes. Respondents consisted of 25 students in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 academic years who filled out a statement questionnaire. Most of the students strongly agree and agree or have a positive attitude towards English. They know the importance of English in this global era, are proud to learn English, and love to use English. Therefore this study suggests, to do more research and studies on the language attitudes of English Department students towards English.

Abstract

The Objective of research is to find out whether the use of a reciprocal model in teaching reading comprehension for the twelve grade at SMK kr. Harapan Rantepao. The writer used quantitative experimental research. The population was the twelve grade students’ of SMK Kr. Harapan Rantepao in the academic year 2018/2019. There were 2 classes as a population. The writer used cluster sampling technique, by choosing one class as a respondent, namely the class XI TJK B. There were 20 students. The data collected through a written test. The result of comparison between students’ score in t-test and t-table indicated that there was a significant difference in improvement of students’ reading comprehension between the students who were taught by reciprocal model and those who were not. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer concluded that the reciprocal model is effectively used in teaching reading comprehension for twelve grade students at SMK Kr. Harapan Rantepao.
