Abstract

Grounded on Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar, this study explores the transitivity system in the 2021 Commencement Speech of DepEd Sec. Leonor Briones.  It specifically aims to identify the transitivity processes and the dominant process found in the Commencement speech and to analyze the linguistic functions in this transitivity system. Employing an explanatory mixed-method design, the results shows that material, mental, relational, and existential processes are present in the Commencement Speech. Among the four identified transitivity process, the dominant is the material process (65%). Moreover, it is revealed that material processes evident in the Commencement Speech display the speaker’s intention to state facts about achievements in the past and the present in response to the Covid-19 crisis that beset the Philippines, to inspire Filipino learners and teachers amidst the challenges of the pandemic, and to acknowledge the critical issue Filipino learners have been facing.

Abstract

In this study, we imposed Analysis of variances test (ANOVA) which use when we have more than two treatments or different levels of a single factors that we wish to compare then we assume homogeneity of variances across the groups being compared although most of the earlier works that have addressed the problem of testing equality of mean variance overestimates the appropriate variance and the test statistic becomes conservative. This is the well-known Behrens – Fisher problem. Then we are interested in comparing several treatments means in this work, we made use the analysis of variance under unequal variances when the groups variances differ. It will be very inappropriate to use the pooled sample variance as a single value for the variances, instead the sample harmonic mean of variances is proposed as an alternative to the pooled sample variance when there is heterogeneity of variances. The distribution theoretically and confirmed using simulation studies and this proposed harmonic mean of variance was , examined in this work and found useful for unequal variances. Data set from Kwara State Ministry of Health on the incidence of diabetes diseases for male patients was used to illustrate the relevance of our proposed test statistic.

Abstract

It is a common practice in statistical analysis to draw conclusions based on significance. P-values often reflect the probability of incorrectly concluding that a null hypothesized model is true; they do not provide information about other types of error that are also important for interpreting statistical results. Standard model selection criteria and test procedures are often inappropriate for comparing models with different numbers of random effects, due to constraints on the parameter space of the variance components. In this paper, we focused on a minimum Bayes factor proposed by Held and Ott (2018) and applied it to a balanced two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with random effects under three cases namely: Case 1: both factors are fixed; Case 2: both factors are random; Case 3: factor A is fixed and factor B is random. We realized that in all the three cases, considered the Bayes factor indicates weak evidence against the null hypothesis of zero variability in the effects of the levels of the factors as well as the interactions. This result is due to the conservative nature of the minimum Bayes factor.

Abstract

In ten collections of folklore, the singular first person deixis appears most often in story II (Sawunggaling), while the plural first person deixis occurs most frequently in story III (The Faithfulness of a Wife). The total number of singular first person deixis is 86, while the plural first person deixis is 4. Furthermore, the second singular persona deixis appears most often in story II (Sawunggaling), while the second plural persona deixis appears most often in story II (Sawunggaling). The total number of singular second persona deixis in the story is 60 pieces, while the second plural persona deixis is 3 pieces. Then the singular third person deixis appears the most in story IV (The Game of Calamity), while the third person plural deixis appears the most in story X (Fire Stone). The total number of singular third person deixis in the story is 408, while the plural third person deixis is 95. Spatial deixis appears most often in story II (Sawunggaling). The total number of spatial deixis in the story is 84 pieces. Finally, time deixis, out of 10 folklore discourse deixis, time deixis appears the most in story III (The Faithfulness of a Wife). So of the three types of deixis, namely persona, space, and time deixis, only the second-plural persona deixis is very rarely found in stories. This means that the use of the second plural person deixis is rarely used in sentences.

Abstract

High achievement especially in Biology is usually enhanced by proper Biology laboratory practical. However, it is assumed that most Biology teachers resort strictly to the use of theoretical method in teaching. This has constantly led to poor performance of students in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination across Nigeria. Therefore, this study investigated the statistical analysis on influence of Biology laboratory practical on students’ academic performance of Senior Secondary Students in Ilorin East, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive survey type. One hundred and twenty (120) students were sampled for the study using proportionate and simple random sampling technique in Ilorin East L.G.A, Kwara State, Nigeria. A researched designed questionnaire was used to accumulate information from respondents. Three research questions and two research hypotheses formulated were tested using percentage, mean, frequency count and independent t. test and ANOVA at 0.05alpha level of significant. The result of findings revealed that Biology laboratory practical has a great influence on senior secondary school students' academic performance and also on the level of understanding and retention capabilities of students but there was no significant influence of Biology laboratory practical on students’ academic performance based on gender but not was significant based on class size. It is thus recommended that; all Biology teachers should engage students more in pratical activities more than the theory aspect to facilitate better understanding among the students, Ministry of Education should provide adequate laboratory equipment and good laboratory environment to promote spirit of curiosity in students and stakeholders should build more infrastructure such as laboratories, classrooms and others.

Abstract

This paper evaluates the Social, Environmental and Political dimensions of Roots Crop Value Chain Analysis in the Case of Samar, Philippines through crop accounting and financial analysis in 2nd district, Western Samar, Philippines. Commercially important crops in Samar are the roots crops that the local farmer are producing for commercial and for personal consummations such as banana, sweet potato, cassava, yam and taro, locally known as “saging na analdaba, kamote, bilanghoy, ube and gaway”respectively, are well-known for their ability to produce a reasonable yield in poor soil conditions with less or no farm inputs. This is the reason why these commercially important crops are often grown by resource-limited farmers and are regarded as a good source of food security and its health benefit. To analyze its productivity, this study was conducted in 2022. Data gathering was primarily done through survey questionnaire, researcher observation and key informant interviews. Results revealed that different gender roles exist where men are primarily responsible for farming while women are for marketing. It also discovered the reason why farmers, though provided with options, often choose the less profitable transaction path, due to perishability of crop. It also solved the mystery of low productivity in this locale as compared with the national and international production. Typhoons, government policies, and pricing mechanisms affect its overall productivity. Cost build-up, value-added, and cost and returns analyses are interesting. Farmers are less profitable yet have the highest opportunity for profitability when the constraints are addressed while sellers have a high degree of profitability due to fewer input costs. The existing entry barriers in each chain were also identified, along with the researcher’s recommendations on how to eliminate or mitigate them.

Abstract

In this study, it was hypothesized that morphological differences were evident between the surface-dwelling and cave ant faunas. There were 9 species of ants found in the study area, namely; Aenictus sp., Anoplolepis gracilipes, Aphaenogaster sp., Carebara sp., Crematogaster sp., Hypoponera sp., Odontoponera sp., Polyrhachis sp., and Tetramorium sp. In this study, limited ant species are present in the cave; in fact, only one species of ant, Aphaenogaster sp., was found in the cave entrance. This study identified no morphological changes between surface-dwelling and cave ants. For accurate data, this research recommends more studies on cave ant morphology.

Abstract

This study was predicated on the need to analyse the influence of radio coverage of conditions in Nigeria’s correctional centres on how Port Harcourt residents perceive how the authorities treat the inmates in these centres. With Agenda Setting and Selective Influence theories as base, the study formulated four research questions. The sample size for the study was 384 (survey) and 24 (content analysis) drawn from a population size of 756,000 and 24 respectively. Among other findings, the study showed that in terms of pattern, radio stations covered conditions in Nigerian Corrective Centres frequently and prominently in detailed fashion. The results also showed that the residents recorded a high level of listenership to the selected programmes and also had a high rate of encounter of issues relating to the corrective centres. Finally, findings showed that the radio coverage of the correctional centres influences how the residents perceive the treatment of the inmates by the authorities. The study recommended that radio stations in Rivers State should maintain the pattern of coverage of the correctional centres so as to lead to advocacy and generate public discourse leading to reforms in the sector.
