Abstract

The recent proliferation of studies on hedging in written academic discourse shows that hedging has been widely employed and is considered effective and a prerequisite for scientific journals. Hedging is generally used for making a proposition and its relationship with the representation of reality and for attenuating the claims to avoid any risks of negations. The present research analyses the use of hedging in the Indonesian academic context. The data were taken from a corpus, named C-Smile, of undergraduate students’ theses of the English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang, totaling up to 1,587,059 words. Employing the hedging taxonomy advocated by Hyland (1996), the present project discovers that “reliability” hedges were the most frequent (88.13%) in use. Of the reliability hedges, modal verbs were found to have the highest frequency (79.60%). Furthermore, the modal auxiliary verb ‘can’ was the most frequently occurring hedging device (38.94%). Nevertheless, there is a scarce occurrence of highly-technical terms of hedges, such as allegedly, presumably, supposedly, etc. Moreover, hedges were more frequent in the Discussion section (56.74%) than in the Introduction section (43.26%). It was concluded that they mostly employ reliability hedges referring to the not-feel-confident due to the influence of culture, i.e., collectivism. It is also possible that they use hedges for the sake of politeness and to make their claims accepted by the readers (Bonyadi et al., 2012). Additionally, the typical kinds of hedges employed and (mis)use of hedges may be attributed to the fact that the corpus is the product of EFL learners whose English falls into the category of interlanguage.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is how the writer found shape and meaning in the ornament in Maimun palace. The writer applied the theory of Semiotics proposed by Peirce (1978). The method is a qualitative research method, which is directly analyzes the facts found in the field. The writer obtained the data by conducting observations and interviews directly to the field, as well as getting information from several books and websites. The result showed that it was found some types of ornaments at the Maimun Palace. Then the writer compiled and described them based on the shape, namely ornament in the form of plant motifs, ornaments in the form of animal motifs, ornaments in the form of natural motifs, and ornaments in the form of calligraphy motifs. Then the writer explained the ornament based on its meaning contained in the Maimun Palace based on semiotic approach. The average function of the ornaments in the Maimun Palace is as decoration on the walls and the Sultan’s Throne.

Abstract

Social commentary is one aspect related to society in seeing a phenomenon that occurs. The researcher see a phenomenon that occurs in a community environment and is represented by poem. Where poem used figurative language to beautify writing. The object in this research is a poem by William Shakespeare entitled A Fairy Song. This research aims to explain the figurative language contained in A Fairy Song and also to analyze the social comments are found in A Fairy Song. This research used the structuralism theory proposed by Strauss, Wellek and Warren. The sociological literary criticism proposed by Marx and Lukacs. The methodology that used in this research is qualitative method approach with the phenomenological approach by Husserl. There are five figurative language contained in A Fairy Song poem such as alliteration, hyperbole, simile, metaphor and personification. The figurative language here is also used as a social commentary which generates criticism of this poem. Social comments are found because of the words that use figurative language to interpret a meaning. The researcher found the social comments from the used of figurative language such as injustice, discrimination and exploitation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to observe family problems, failures, and selfishness in the film “Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini” by Marchella FP. This film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name and is released in theaters on January 9, 2020. This research was conducted using a qualitative method and contains several values, especially moral values. This study resulted in three findings. First, family is the most important supporter in life. Second, failure is something that cannot be separated from the journey of life that we go through, even failure can be a life lesson so that we can be better in the future. Third, selfishness is a trait that we should not have because this trait can cause negative impacts on ourselves and those around us. This film tells about a family who seems happy but has many secrets. The main character in this film is named " Awan ". After experiencing her first failure, Awan gets acquainted with a man named "Kale". A man who gives new life experiences, about breaking, getting up, falling, growing, missing, and all the fears of humans in general that leads her to know the secrets that occur in her family.

Abstract

The main problem in this research is to analyze an educational value in the film "Orang Kaya Baru" which contains the values ​​of life in society. In this film, it depicts a family who has a simple life but does not eliminate the sense of togetherness, they are taught to always be grateful and stay happy in that simplicity, besides that there is a moral message that the author wants to convey about a simple family life and then becoming rich. Objective from study this is known dependency moral messages as well as calculation delivered value in the film This study concludes that the educational values contained in the film "Orang Kaya Baru" are a) social values, namely parents who give advice to their children, please help, until the sense of kinship in the film is lost, b) cultural values, namely when eating, give envelopes. At weddings and eating together with family, c) religious values, namely gratitude, always being patient and not forgetting to always give charity, d) moral values, namely always apologizing, being indifferent, being responsible as a family head, being honest and independent, and creating creative ideas in order to have achievements.

Abstract

The persuasive language used by agents is able to change the thoughts and feelings of the prospective customer until the opinion that conveyed by the agent is carried out reaches its main purpose, closing. The researcher sees a phenomenon among agents where they have offices in the same place, then have the same coach and training model, but in the end of the day the results seen from their sales figures vary from one another. This research aims to analyze what persuasive strategies are used in sales and the relationship between persuasive language and speech acts. The theories used in this research are pragmatics and communication. Speech acts in this research used as the support theory of the pragmatics. The researcher used qualitative research methods to analyze the data. The result, the researcher got 14 data in analysis of persuasive strategies and illocutionary act. There are, 6 data of enhancing credibility, 4 data of using logic and evidence to persuade and 4 data of using emotion to persuade. The researcher found the most frequently used strategy is Using logic and evidence and Enhancing credibility with competence. From the analysis the researcher also found there two sales methods, soft selling and hard selling.

Abstract

Era digital yaitu zaman dimana segala sesuatu serba digital. Adanya teknologi digital seseorang tidak harus seperti dahulu saat menghubungkan dan dihubungkan,Seseorang juga dapat memanfaatkan teknologi di era digital untuk membuat perkembangan kreativitas, menemukan ide ide, imajinasi dan daya nalar dalam membuat suatu karya melalui konten digital, lalu di era digital juga mempunyai tantangan dalam mencari ilmu pengetahuan secara berkaitan dan harus saling meliputi banyak hal,tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu mengenalkan aplikasi belajar digital kepada peserta didik dan mahsiswa agar selalu terus berkembang dalam proses pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu dengan metode tidak langsung ini maksudnya ialah mengumpulkan data-data maupun informasi yang terkait seperti mempelajari buku-buku pustaka atau artikel yang berasal dari media internet dengan bentuk kegiatan telaah kepustakaan, data penelitian ini berupa data sekunder yang relevan dengan topik pembahasan seperti era digital, google classroom dan media pembelajaran dalam mata kuliah keterampilan menulis, data bersumber dari buku terbitan Indonesia,serta artikel hasil penelitian yang sudah nasional. Penggunaan Google Classroom di era digital sebagai media pembelajaran antara lain dapat membantu peserta didik dalam proses pembelajaran berlangsung, dan menuntut peserta didik agar lebih mengenal aplikasi aplikasi belajar dalam media daring. Penggunaan Google Classroom dimungkinkan dengan cara yang ditunjukkan di bawah ini:1)Unduh aplikasi Google Classroom.2) Setelah membuka aplikasi Google Classroom Masukkan alamat email akun Classroom Anda, lalu klik Berikutnya. Masukkan sandi, lalu klik Berikutnya. Jika ada pesan selamat datang, tinjau pesan tersebut, lalu klik Terima.3) Setelah register pada google classroom, guru bisa membuat kelas untuk peserta didik atau mahasiswa.4)langkah terakhir guru bisa membuat kode kelas untuk memulai pembelajaran. bahwa Google Clasroom sangat berguna untuk proses pembelajran di era digital untuk menambah wawasan digital pada mahasiswa dan peserta didik serta mempermudah guru atau dosen untuk mengelola pembelajaran, dan diharapkan bahwa aplikasi google classroom dapat membuat peserta didik atau mahasiswa bisa belajar melewati aplikasi digital dan dapat meningkatkan semangat peserta didik atau mahasiswa dalam melewati proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Kreativitas adalah kemampuan untuk menciptakan suatu hal yang baru. Bertujuan untuk melatih kemampuan dan keterampilan siswa untuk menghasilkan sesuatu hal yang baru. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode literatur review karena literatur review adalah suatu teknik keterampilan yang menggunakan teori praktik dan menganalisis data. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan model pembelajaran mind mapping, dalam proses pembuatan mind mapping ada beberapa Langkah, yaitu 1) menyiapkan alat tulis, 2) menuliskan topik utama, 3) menambahkan sub topik dan kata kunci disetiap cabang sub topik, 4) mambahkan simbol – simbol atau hiasan yang menarik agar hasil mind mapping tersebut dapat diingat dengan baik. Penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa model pembelajaran mind mapping sangat penting diterapkan dikelas karena dianggap efektif dan efisien untuk meningkatkan kreativitas siswa disekolah.

Abstract

Artikel ini menganalisis interpretasi dan metafora yang ada pada lirik lagu Iwan Fals. Penelitian ini juga dilakukan dengan pendekatan hermeneutika yang menunjukkan bahwa hal ini bersifat deskriptif. Metafora juga digunakan dalam lagu "Tikus-tikus Kantor" seperti tikus, kucing dan udang. Salah satu hal yang menarik adalah lirik lagu ini tidak diungkapkan dengan jelas tetapi menggunakan bentuk kiasan. Penelitian telah menunjukkan bahwa lagu tersebut adalah tentang kritik publik terhadap korupsi oleh pejabat pemerintah dan lembaga penegak hokum.

Abstract

Media digital dalam bentuk media sosial seperti facebook, instagram, whatsapp, dan twitter, berkembang sangat pesat dalam masyarakat era teknologi modern saat ini. Bahasa yang digunakan saat berselancar di dunia maya pun cenderung tidak baku. Sehubungan dengan itu, tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dalam media sosial. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif analisis dengan berdasarkan pada bahan yang diperoleh tanpa menambahi atau mengurangi kemudian menganalisisnya. Data diperoleh dari status dan percakapan di kolom komentar pada instagram dan facebook, serta diambil secara acak. Data yang diambil merupakan data yang berkaitan dengan masalah penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada tiga jenis penggunaan bahasa Indonesia pada media sosial, yakni penyisipan bahasa Inggris, penyisipan bahasa daerah, dan penyingkatan kata.
