Abstract

This research discusses about the main character’s state of mind in Pigpen webtoon through the approach of psychoanalysis in literary criticism. This research aims to analyze the types of schizophrenic experiences and desires that are reflected in the main character’s schizophrenia by using the theory of schizophrenia and Jacque Lacan’s psychoanalysis. The methodology applied in this research is the qualitative research method to elaborate on the phenomena of psychology in literary works. This analysis is supported by the data acquired from journals, books, theses, and Pigpen webtoon as the data source. The writer identifies several results from the analysis that has been done that are relevant to the idea psychology approach. First, from the theory of schizophrenia, the main character is mainly going through delusions and hallucinations. Second, through Lacan’s psychological concept of desire and identity formation, the writer found two desires in the main character: the desire to have (anaclitic desire) and the desire to be (narcissistic desire), which happened in the Imaginary and Symbolic stages. In relation to desires, it is found that the main character’s experiences of schizophrenia are influenced by his desires. The schizophrenic experiences reflected forms of the main character’s desires for fulfilment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover how students' critical thinking skills developed during the classroom learning process. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Ratahan, and the sample is the first-year students, which was made up of 35 students. The instruments used in collecting data are observation techniques. The data were analyzed qualitatively. 1) The concept of purpose was present in Meetings 2, 3, 4, and 5. It is shown that when students reason, they reason to achieve some objective, to satisfy some desire, or to fulfill some need. 2) The concept of "question" was in Meetings 1, 2, 4, and 5. This shows that generally, the students had questions and problems to be solved. (3) The concept of concept was only observed in Meetings 2, 3, and 5. Some ideas or concepts are used in all reasoning but not others. 4) The concept of assumption was in Meetings 1, 2, 4, and 5. All reasoning must begin somewhere; we must take some things for granted. Any "defect" in the assumptions or presuppositions with which the reasoning begins is a possible source of problems for students. 5) Only at Meeting 5 was the concept of information discussed. Whenever we reason, there is some "stuff," some phenomenon, about which we are reasoning. Any "defect," then, in the experiences, data, evidence, or raw material upon which a person’s reasoning is based is a possible source of problems. 6) The concept of interpretation was discussed in Meetings 3 and 4. Reasoning proceeds in steps: "Because this is so, that also is so (or probably so)," or "Since this, therefore that." Any "defect" in such inferences is a possible problem in our reasoning. 7) In Meetings 3 and 5, the concept of point of view or frame of reference was discussed. In this case, students reason within certain frames of reference. Any "defect" in that point of view or frame of reference is a possible source of problems in the reasoning. 8) Only Meetings 3 and 4 discussed the concept of implications (and consequences). Any "defect" in the implications or consequences of our reasoning is a possible source of problems.

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the prosperous era that occurred in America during the 1920s, as depicted in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. In conducting this research, the writer uses a qualitative method in which the data are in the form of words and the writer is the key instrument. The sources are taken from the work itself and other relevant books supporting the analysis. The writer employs a mimetic approach to data analysis, which holds that literary work is a reflection and imitation of aspects of the universe. As a result of remaining neutral during World War I and the occurrence of migration, America can now concentrate on economic mobilization. Prosperity is marked by the rise of consumerism, business fortune, and residence, but it also has a negative impact on the American people in terms of the rise of a new way of life and the decline of morality, such as a proclivity for free life, alcoholism, and free sex.

Abstract

This research presents a description of the character and personality of Simpson in "The Spectacles." In conducting this research, the writer used qualitative research, in which the data are collected in the form of words and the writer is the key instrument. The data were collected from the short story, which was the primary source. The other books concerning theory, critics, statements, and notes on literature are secondary sources. The writer uses an objective approach in analyzing the data. The result shows that Simpson is pictured as a young, handsome, and romantic man, but he also has a real problem with his eyes. The traits of Simpson that appear most strikingly in the story are pride and dignity. Spectacles or glasses are a symbol of Simpson’s weakness. Furthermore, his spectacles are what make him dignified and proud. Simpson appears dignified and proud, but he could actually be a coward. Actually, he only cares about outward appearance. The sense of both dignity and pride is, of course, honorable. But in the short story, The Spectacles, the sense of dignity and pride is the weakness of one’s moral value. Outward appearances such as beauty, handsomeness, luxury wears or expensive dresses, wealth, a successful career, a famous reputation, high class or top rank in society, and a degree or academic title all portray pride and dignity. But in the short story, The Spectacles, Simpson displays misplaced pride and dignity. Madame Lalande is a wise and intelligent old lady. She remembers her wise mother and grandmother the most.
