Abstract

This study aims to find out and understand students' perspectives regarding the impact of syntax courses on their ability to speak English. This is motivated by the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application of syntax in the real world. To answer these problems, this study used a descriptive qualitative case approach to capture the comprehensive picture needed to answer the research questions. The data collection technique used interviews, by interviewing a number of students by asking 3 questions regarding the impact of syntax courses on their English language skills. The research was conducted at one of the Islamic Universities in Medan. The researcher interviewed 10 students who had studied the syntax course. The findings of the interviews are described descriptively. From the 3 questions asked, the results showed that: 1) During studying syntax in one semester, students can improve their knowledge of grammar and basic rules of English sentence structure: motivating them to better understand tree diagrams. 2) The impact of syntax course on students' language skills is the impact on writing, reading, and listening skills but the greatest impact on writing skills. Thus, syntax courses have a very positive impact on students' English language skills, not only in theoretical understanding but also in practical application.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to use matching techniques and language mistake analysis to figure out how accurate Google Translate is, especially when translating text from English to Indonesian. As a source text, one passage from Johann Gottfried Herder's book "Selected Writings on Aesthetics" was used to gather information. After that, Google Translate (GT) changes the info. When you look at GT translation data, you have to explain the matching technique and compare it with tools that measure the amount of translation matching. This way, mistakes in the language can be found and the quality of the GT translation can be judged. The study found that (1) out of the 13 source data, only 4 data (or 31%) are accurate translations, 7 data (or 54%) are less accurate translations, and 2 data (15%) are incorrect translations. right on. This means that the accuracy is only 31%. About half of it is less clear at the same time. Some people are hard to understand. (2) It turns out that GT can do good translations if it only uses literal translation and matching methods. (3) Since GT only uses textual and transposition translation strategies, it might make translations less accurate if more complicated strategies use transposition, modulation, or description together. (3) But if only a modulation technique is needed, GT can't do anything but make wrong translations. It doesn't make sense because it can only use the translation approach. Because it used a direct translation approach, GT failed to translate one case and made a translation that was wrong. In the end, Google Translate can only correctly translate English text into Indonesian when it uses a literal matching approach. This is especially true in this case.

Abstract

Black Swan (2010) is a psychological horror movie that explores themes of ambition, perfectionism, and the psychological toll of obsession in the competitive world of professional ballet. The movie delves into Nina's descent into madness as she strives for artistic perfection, blurring the lines between reality and hallucination. The aim achieved in this analysis includes examining how psychological stress manifests itself, how high-pressure artistic circumstances can distort reality, and how these factors influence the protagonist's spiral toward mental instability. This is qualitative-descriptive research. The researchers follow a four-step process involving data identification, classification, analysis, and concluding. The main data collection comes from Black Swan (2010), focusing on scenes when Nina Sayers experiences mental breakdowns. The researchers collected data from the film itself and several journals, focusing on Nina's mental disorders and applying Freudian concepts to analyze her behavior and personality. The research results show that obsession and strong demands for perfection from herself and others have disturbed Nina's mental instability in Black Swan (2010).

This research was conducted at the second grade of SMAN 1 IV Koto Agam Regency by the reason of there were still a lot of students who thought that listening is a difficult skill to learn and had low score in listening. This problem occurred because the students were still lack of exposure to the English to provide them with a comprehensible input in acquire the language especially listening skill. Moreover, theories said that watching English movies as a habit could be beneficial and could provide an input to develop students’ listening skill. However, there were not all of the students who had watching movie habit got good score in listening. Nevertheless, there were some of the students who had watching movie habit and got good score in listening. The method used in this research was quantitative method with the correlational design. The population of the research was all of the students from eleventh grade at SMAN 1 IV Koto and the sample was consisted of 33 students. The sample was taken by using random sampling technique. The instruments that were used in this research was questionnaire for measuring the students’ habit in watching English movie and listening comprehension test for measuring students’ listening skill. The researcher used Product Moment Correlation to see if there was any correlation between the two variables. The result showed that the value of correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.223 which means that there was a positive low correlation between the variable x and variable y. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the index value rxy was lower than the index value of rt (0.223<0.355) which means that the H0 (null hypothesis) was accepted and Ha was rejected. Thus, there was unsignificant correlation between the variable x and variable y. However, this result may have been affected by internal threats. The students used of subtitle while watching movie was quite high which may prevent them to optimally receive the inputs and acquire the language especially listening skill.
