Abstract

The topic of this paper is the relationship between feminism and the stereotypes in the movie Mulan by Walt Disney (1998). Mulan is the representation of a tough and brave woman. The movie raises the issue of Mulan’s feminism as the main character and gender stereotype that suggests women as inferior to men. This paper focuses on the main character and how she tries to break the stereotypes in her society. Liberal feminist theory is used as an approach in this paper. The sources to conduct the analysis are journals, articles, books, and the internet. The result of the analysis shows that women can also participate in public and society when they are given the same opportunity as men have. Keywords: feminism, stereotypes, liberal feminist, public places

Abstract

Communication is the way to associate with others. It is not only spoken but also can be written which can be expressed in text. Text could be a language that contains sentences that express someone’s feelings, thoughts, and messages. Song lyrics are one of the results of a text. It has meaning from the speaker to readers. In this study, the writer is interested to discuss taboo words in the song lyrics within More Malice EP by Snoop Dogg. Especially, this study focus on analyzing their types, the predominant types, their meanings and  their functions. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. There are 8 songs in the album, but only 7 songs were analyzed.  Based on the analysis of the data of taboo words in the album, the results are as follows. Firstly the types of taboo words found in the album are epithet, vulgarity, obscenity, and profanity. The predominant type is obscenity. Secondly, the types of taboo words found in the album are conceptual, connotative, and affective. The predominant meaning is connotative. Finnaly, the functions of taboo words found in the album are to draw attention, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority. Abstract

The topic of this research is the use of figure of speech in three song lyrics. The title of this research is " FIGURE OF SPEECH ON THE SONGS IN THE ALBUM GAJAH BY TULUS ". The author chose three song titles as research data, the song entitled, “Sepatu”, “Gajah”, and “Jangan Cintai Aku Apa Adanya”. The reason the author chose this topic as research is because the lyrics of the songs on the album have a deep meaning, the songs have also received many awards at prestigious music events. The songs were also composed by Tulus who is the creator and singer of the songs based on some personal experiences in his life story. In this paper, the authors wrote using a qualitative descriptive method, in which the authors obtained research results by listening to songs that had been selected as a data source, then looking for pieces of song lyrics containing figure of speech, qualifying the types of figure of speech used in the lyrics of the song, then describe the meaning of the song lyrics that contain figure of speech Keywords: Figure of speech, Song, Music, Meaning, Lyric.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out and analys the types and meaning of figurative language used in Blurryface and Trench albums by Twenty One Pilots Band, further this research try to compare between the two albums in the use of figurative language. The method of this study is qualitative research. The main data of this research are the lyrics of 5 songs from Blurryface album and 5 songs from Trench album by Twenty One Pilots Band with determined criteria. As a result of the research, the writer found there are fifteen types of figurative language used in both albums, namely metaphor, simile, oxymoron, hyperbole, pun, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, rhetorical question, anaphora, epistrophe, apostrophe, asyndeton, polysyndeton, and polyptoton which is predominated by metaphor (39,71%). Comparatively, there are similarities and differences in the use of figurative language. The both albums similarly describe a feeling of weakness, animate feeling insecure, and express a sense of difficulty. It seems that the two albums are different in the effects expected from the use of figurative language. In Blurryface album, the figurative language is generally used to express feeling of insecure, reflections, and even motivations. Meanwhile, in the Trench album, it is used to illustrate the narrative of the story about the world of Trench, the city of Dema, and the fight of Bandito against the bishops. Keywords: Figurative language, song lyric, figurative meaning, comparative study.

Abstract

This research deals with analysis of satire and utopia condition in Zootopia by Rich Moore and Byron Howard. This research aims to find out the type of satire and to know the kind of utopia condition reflected in Zootopia. The writer uses types of satire theory by Abrams & Harpham (2014) and utopia theory by More in Dutton (2014). The qualitative descriptive method is applied as the research method in analyzing the data. The data focus in Zootopia film that consists of satire and utopia condition.Based on the analysis, the writer finds the three types of satire, i.e. Horation satire, Juvenalian satire, and Menippean satire found within the film. From the data are obtained, Zootopia is categorized as Juvenalian satire because it is the dominant data because almost all of characters use harsh words and straight to the point in delivering the message. The messages that are conveyed with harsh language make the audience feels angry because it can touch the conscience. Thus, it makes realize how important it is to respect differences and tolerance the others.There were data of utopia conditions depicted by the situation in Zootopia. Zootopia is portrayed as a place where someone lives with each other in peace, tolerance for existing differences, and the realization of dreams, where everyone has same equality and right to be whatever they want.  Keywords: Horation satire, Juvenalian satire, Menippean satire, satire, film, utopia, Zootopia.

Abstract

Figurative language is one of the languages used in literary works, especially in song lyrics. It is often used to help songwriters create beautiful songs by conveying unusual words in song lyrics. It also gives the right role to the reader or listener. Therefore, the use of figurative language in a work will make the reader or listener excited. The use of figurative language can also make listeners have a broad imagination and understand the meanings available through figurative language in a song explicitly.When people listen to music through its lyrics, language plays an important role in conveying the meaning of the song. Moana is a Disney film that also uses many songs as the background. Therefore, this study aims to determine the types of figures of speech and the meaning of song lyrics in the Moana movie. The researcher analyzed the types of figurative language and the meanings contained in the song lyrics. The researcher also analyzes how figurative language contributes to the meaning of the song lyrics.The researcher analyzed the song lyrics by reading them intensively and paying attention to each line. After that, the researcher analyzed the figurative language and the meaning of the song's lyrics. This is to determine whether the sentences are included in figurative language based on the meaning of the sentences in the lyrics of the song. The data instrument is song lyrics in the movie Moana. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. Through these steps, the researcher found 8 figurative languages in the song lyrics, that is symbol, metonymy, personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, allegory, and understatement. From this thesis, the researcher hopes that they will be interested in learning more about figurative language, and they will better understand the meaning of figurative language in a song.Keywords: Types of Figurative Language, Meaning of figurative language, Semantics, Song Lyrics, Moana movie.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the types in Yoon’s picture books series, and to analyze their implied meanings. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data used in this study are three series of picture books by Helen Recorvits, that is My Name is Yoon, Yoon and the Jade Bracelet, and Yoon and the Christmas Mitten. The data used in this study are utterances containing flouting maxims in the three series picture books by Helen Recorvits and to analyze the flouting maxim the researcher uses the theory of Paul Grice. The results of this study can be summarized as follow. Firstly, the types of flouting maxims found in the Yoon picture books series are flouting maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. Among the four flouting maxims, relevance flouting occurs most frequently, which means that the cases of irrelevance in the conversations show indirectly massages and irrelevantly rather than directly and relevantly. Finally, the meanings implied in the flouting maxims in the data analyze include the functions of flouting maxims to refuse, to adapt, to express a feeling of envy, to avoid disappointing, to educate, and to respect other. Keywords: flouting maxim, implied meaning, cooperative participle, picture books, pragmatics.

Abstract

This thesis with a title The Aggressive Jack Torrance in The Shining by Stephen King: A Psychological Analysis. This thesis is a literature study of with the help of psychological theory as a tool to examine the story. Wellek and Warren (1949) opinion about the connection of psychology and literature is the foundation of this thesis. They found out that there is a connection between two of the study, because both of them analyze human being as their subject of study.The theories that writer borrows from psychology discipline are: Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of needs that divide human needs into class. This needs have to be fulfilled in order to function properly as a human being. Second theory in this thesis is called Stress and Coping which explains the definition of stress according to Lazarus and Folkman. The last theory is Frustration-Aggression by John Dollard that describes the aggressive reaction of a frustrated person that cannot attain their goal.The method used in this research is qualitative. Data of this research is from the novel and the film. Several books are used as references to analyze the data and support this research. In collecting data, the writer uses the technique of reading the book and watching the film repeatedly to find out the contents of the story.In this study, the writer learn what happen to Jack Torrance character in The Shining with the aid of Psychological theory. According to Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of needs, a human being has to fulfill his needs in order to function properly. Jack Torrance unable to fulfill his needs in order to function properly as a human being. Besides that, Jack Torrance incapable of acomplish his goals in life, which stress and frustrate him. This frustration, turns into aggression that Jack Torrance take out to the closest people to him, which is his family, Wendy and Danny. Using Stress and Coping, the writer can describe what is stress. This theory function as a tool to analyze Jack Torrance’s stress in the novel. The writer finds out that the source of his stress is because he cannot accomplish his goal. Lastly, using Frustration-Aggression which described Jack Torrance’s aggressive reaction because of his frustration.Another founding of this study is the main problem of Jack Torrance according to conclusion from the analysis of his character in chapter iv. Jack Torrance main source of frustration is his dilemma. He has to choose whether he should be a good husband and father or to be a loyal hotel caretaker. Should he take his son to come down into Sidewinder or should he take care of Overlook Hotel, and keep his family stay at Overlook without medical assistance for his son.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types and function of illocutionary act in movie script of Frozen II. The approach in this study is pragmatic focusing on illocutionary act based on Searle. The writer found that many dialogues in movie script of Frozen II contains illocutionary act. In this study, the writer uses a qualitative method. Qualitative method is an analysis method based on data in the form of text. In this study, the writer found that there are five types of illocutionary acts contained in the movie script of Frozen II: 10 dialogues for representative illocutionary act, 8 dialogues for commissive illocutionary act, 9 dialogues for directive illocutionary act, 7 dialogues for expressive illocutionary act, and 2 dialogues for declaration illocutionary act. each type of illocutionary act in the script movie has a different function. Keywords: pragmatic, illocutionary act, qualitative, types, Frozen II

Abstract

Text is a language that contains sentences that express someone’s feelings, thoughts, and messages. Song lyrics as a form of text certainly contains meanings or messages addressed by the speaker to readers. In this study, the writer is interested in analyzing to discuss the types of presupposition, the predominant ones, and the implied meaning in selected song lyrics in the Sour album. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. In this study the writer choose five song lyric in the Sour album such as “Driver License”, “Good 4 U”, “Déjà vu”, “Happier”, and “Traitor”. The result of this study can be summarize as follows. Firstly, there are various kinds of presupposition are found such as existential, factive, lexical, non-factive, structural, and counterfactual. Secondly, the predominant types presupposition is factive, with the assumes that the song lyrics is fact based on subjectify of the speaker. Finally, the meanings implied in the song lyrics of this study mostly indicate expressions of love and broken heart.Keywords: pragmatics, presupposition types, presupposition meaning, predominant presupposition, song lyrics.
