Abstract

This study presents the design and implementation of a smart feeder system integrated with real-time water quality monitoring powered by a solar photovoltaic system and based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The system automatically dispenses fish feed and monitors key water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The ESP32 microcontroller was used as the main controller, integrated with multiple sensors and an MQTT-based monitoring application. The entire system is powered by a 30 Wp solar panel and a 12 V battery, enabling autonomous operation in remote areas without grid access. Experimental results show that motor rotation speed significantly affects feed distribution. The optimal feeding performance was achieved at medium motor speed with a feed distance of 8 m, ensuring uniform feed dispersion and low energy consumption (±14.4 W). Water quality parameters remained within the ideal range for freshwater aquaculture: pH 6.6–6.9, temperature 27.5–28.8 °C, and TDS 380–450 ppm. The photovoltaic system generated around 90–110 Wh/day, meeting the system’s daily energy demand (±45 Wh/day). This integrated IoT–solar solution demonstrates high efficiency and sustainability, suitable for rural aquaculture applications.

Abstract

The banana blossom has significant potential as a local superfood that can enhance both the production and quality of breast milk (ASI). Its nutritional components—including plant-based proteins, fiber, minerals, and phytonutrients—make it a safe, natural, and easily accessible alternative source of nutrition across various regions of Indonesia. This study is particularly important given the persistently high prevalence of nutritional problems among infants and the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the country. The development of banana blossom–based food innovations is expected to serve as an effective strategy to strengthen household food security and address nutritional challenges among vulnerable groups, particularly breastfeeding mothers and infants in their early stages of life. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential effects of banana blossom consumption on optimizing the growth and development of infants aged 0–6 months. This research employs an experimental design using a pre–post-test control group method. The participants consist of 40 breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 0–6 months within the working area of Puskesmas Stabat, Medan. The intervention group received banana blossom consumption every three days for four weeks. The results show that banana blossom consumption had a significant effect on increasing infants’ weight and height, indicating its potential contribution to sustainably improving infant nutritional status.

Abstract

Livestock waste is a type of waste produced from livestock activities. Problems caused by livestock waste include unpleasant odors that can interfere with breathing. This problem is caused by ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. This study aims to analyze the results of processing cow manure using MOL to be used as fertilizer in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia concerning Minimum Technical Requirements for Organic Fertilizers, Biofertilizers, and Soil Improvers in 2019. Cow manure has the potential to be used as compost. The content of nutrients such as Nitrogen (N), Fosfor (F), and Potassium (K) can increase soil fertility. The composting process can be carried out by adding materials containing microorganisms that decompose MOL. The fermentation process is carried out for 4 weeks. Changes that occur during the fermentation process include an increase in temperature and a dark brown color. Based on the test results, there was a decrease in the content of solid fertilizer. This is due to the fermentation time factor. The longer the fermentation time, the more nutrients are used for microorganism activity. This causes the availability of nutrients to decrease and be depleted. Experiments with better results can be carried out by reducing the length of the fermentation time. Further experiments can be carried out using solid manure waste as an additional nutrient in organic fertilizer made from vegetable juice.

Abstract

This study compares the accuracy of two face detection algorithms, Haar Cascade and Multi-task Cascaded Convolutional Networks (MTCNN), to determine the most suitable method for implementation in a facial recognition–based attendance system. The evaluation was conducted through a series of tests under common real-world conditions, including variations in distance, lighting intensity, and face orientation. Each algorithm was assessed using performance metrics such as Precision, Recall, F1-Score, and processing time to provide a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and limitations. The results indicate that MTCNN consistently achieves higher accuracy across nearly all tested scenarios, particularly under low-light conditions and when the face is not oriented frontally. In contrast, Haar Cascade demonstrates faster processing time but experiences significant decreases in accuracy under non-ideal conditions typically found in practical applications. Based on these findings, MTCNN is considered more suitable for attendance systems that require high accuracy and robustness to environmental variations, while Haar Cascade may be preferred in applications where computational efficiency and speed are the primary considerations.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious public health issue in Indonesia, with long-term impacts on children’s physical and cognitive development. Fishing communities often face challenges in accessing adequate nutritional information and resources, making it crucial to examine the contributing factors to stunting in these environments. The high prevalence of stunting in coastal areas of Medan, including Medan Labuhan, underscores the urgency of this study. Factors such as low parental education, limited nutritional knowledge, and poor economic conditions contribute significantly to the high incidence of stunting. In addition, non-exclusive breastfeeding practices and suboptimal nutritional parenting styles serve as major risk factors affecting child growth. This study aims to evaluate the impact of non-exclusive breastfeeding and nutritional parenting styles on the risk of stunting among children under five in the fishing community of Medan Labuhan. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 100 respondents selected purposively from Kampung Nelayan Indah, Medan Labuhan. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and anthropometric measurements of children aged 24–59 months. The data were analyzed using chi-square and logistic regression tests. The results indicated that most variables—such as exclusive breastfeeding, breastfeeding frequency, age of complementary feeding introduction, caregiver, number of food types, and daily meal frequency—were not significantly associated with children’s nutritional status (p > 0.05). However, food refusal behavior (≥ 3 times/day) showed a significant association (p < 0.05), indicating that children who frequently refused food were more likely to experience poor nutritional status.

Abstract

This study aims to identify user satisfaction, importance, and development priorities for the English Language Speech Assistant (ELSA) application by integrating Outcome-Driven Innovation (ODI) and sentiment analysis methods. Using reviews collected from the Google Play Store via ScrapeStorm, two sentiment models were applied. Namely, Valance Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner (VADER) for overall sentiment polarity and Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) for feature-spesific sentiment extraction. The result show that 86.23% of user reviews express positive sentiments, reflecting high satisfaction with ELSA’s functionality and learning experience. Correlation testing confirms strong validity between VADER and ABSA models (r = 0.98), and moderate alignment with user rating (r  0.55), confirming both construct and external validity. The ODI analysis further identifies Pronunciation as the highest-priority aspect (opportunity = 12.1), followed by Learning (opportunity = 2.6), highlighting key areas for innovation. Other aspects, such as Support and Subscription, show balanced performance with low opportunity values. The integration of ODI and sentiment analysis provide a data-driven framework for product improvement, enabling developers to prioritize enhancements based on user-perceived value. The findings contribute to informed strategic decision-making in the development of digital language-learning applications.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the determinants of coal loading-unloading productivity at the Ship-to-Ship (STS) Transfer Taboneo in Indonesia. Through thematic analysis of interviews, observations, and documents involving crane operators, port managers, and ship crews, the research reveals a "Resilience through Informality" model. Findings indicate that high operational effectiveness is achieved not through optimal technical systems, but through the exceptional adaptive capacity and experiential knowledge of the workforce that compensates for significant vulnerabilities in equipment logistics and formal workflow systems. While this human-centric approach currently ensures operational continuity, it presents inherent fragilities related to workforce welfare, knowledge retention, and environmental compliance. The study concludes that sustainable productivity enhancement requires a dual strategy: formalizing existing tacit knowledge through competency-based frameworks while simultaneously strengthening technical and logistical infrastructures. This research contributes to maritime studies by highlighting the critical role of human capital in port efficiency and provides practical insights for developing sustainable port management strategies in resource-constrained environments.
