The mission of the International Journal of Literature and Language Studies (IJLLS) is to provide readers with the development of language studies in linguistics and literature. In addition to manuscripts that center on the study, we welcome manuscripts on a wide range of topics relating to the technology used for language development, cultural impact on languages, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language. IJLLS publishes scholarly conceptual, theoretical, and empirical manuscripts on the study of language and focused on literature and linguistic analysis and development. Submissions to the journal should be readable and understandable by a wide audience. Manuscripts should therefore also focus on analysis or illustration of the issues covered, rather than merely providing a mathematical or technical coverage, which would be more suitable for a specialist journal. All manuscripts are submitted and reviewed electronically. We provide our published authors with both a quality publication and the widespread readership that comes from publishing all manuscripts online within a few weeks of acceptance. This approach ensures that published works are read and cited by the widest possible audience.

Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic dimensions of idioms in English and Uzbek, focusing on how context, speaker intention, and cultural background shape their usage. Using a contrastive analysis framework, the research examines idioms from both languages to identify functional similarities and cultural divergences. The findings reveal that while both languages use idioms for politeness, emphasis, and emotional coloring, Uzbek idioms rely more heavily on kinship and agricultural contexts, whereas English idioms frequently draw from maritime, sports, and commercial history. Understanding these pragmatic nuances is essential for effective cross-cultural communication and translation.

Abstract

This article presents a formal source-based analysis of archival documents relating to the history of the National University of Uzbekistan, preserved in Fund R-38 of the Central State Archive of Tashkent City. The study focuses on Inventory No. 3, a collection of permanent-storage records covering 1949-1988 and reflecting the institutional, educational, scientific and administrative activity of Tashkent State University during the Soviet period. The article examines the formation of the fund, the typological structure of its documents, the evidence of organizational transformations and the value of these records for reconstructing the history of higher education in Uzbekistan. Special attention is given to rectorial orders, academic council minutes, annual plans and reports, faculty and department documentation, patent-office materials, postgraduate training records and personnel files. The analysis demonstrates that Fund R-38 is a complex historical source that reveals the mechanisms of academic governance, state educational policy, research specialization and the formation of intellectual elites. The article also notes the methodological limitations caused by missing and poorly preserved files and argues for urgent digitization, systematic description and wider scholarly use of the fund.

Abstract

Irony is a complex pragmatic phenomenon that occupies a central place in human communication. This article examines the cognitive foundations of irony, the mental mechanisms involved in its comprehension — namely Theory of Mind, metarepresentation, and inferential reasoning — as well as its pragmatic and social functions. The study aims to analyse irony as a complex cognitive mechanism and to illuminate its role in human cognition on the basis of recent findings in cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, and neuroscience. The analysis draws on a theoretical-descriptive method and is supported by examples from Uzbek language data. The results demonstrate that comprehending irony requires higher-order cognitive capacities, and that this process varies according to cultural and contextual factors.

The translation of medical terminology into English plays a crucial role in international healthcare communication, medical education, scientific research, and clinical documentation. Due to globalization and the increasing exchange of medical information across countries, accurate translation of medical terms has become a significant linguistic and professional necessity. The study applies qualitative analysis to selected medical terms originating from Latin, Greek, and Uzbek/Russian medical discourse. The findings demonstrate that successful medical translation requires not only linguistic competence but also profound medical knowledge and cultural awareness. The article concludes that standardized terminology and specialized translator training are essential for improving the quality of medical communication.

Abstract

Insomnia is widely recognized as the most common sleep disorder across the world, affecting people of different ages, cultures, and lifestyles. In simple terms, it is not just occasional difficulty sleeping, but a persistent condition that can seriously affect daily functioning and overall well-being. This paper explores the main causes and underlying mechanisms of chronic insomnia by reviewing recent sleep research alongside established psychological theories. It brings together findings from clinical studies, neurobiological research, and psychophysiological evidence in order to provide a more complete understanding of the disorder. The reviewed literature suggests that insomnia does not arise from a single cause. Rather, it develops through a combination of heightened central nervous system activity, psychological factors such as stress and anxiety, disruptions in daily routines, and individual vulnerability differences. In other words, it is a condition shaped by both the mind and the body interacting over time. Among different treatment approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is consistently identified as the most effective non-pharmacological intervention. Evidence shows that it can reduce excessive brain arousal and improve the stability and quality of sleep.Overall, the findings highlight that insomnia is best understood through a biopsychosocial perspective that connects biological processes, psychological states, and environmental influences. Future research is expected to focus more on personalized treatment approaches and the long-term effectiveness of existing therapies.
